2-Benzoylpyridine-phenylhydrazone (H2BzPh), 2-benzoylpyridine-para-chloro-phenylhydrazone (H2BzpClPh), and 2-benzoylpyridine-para-nitro-phenyl (H2BzpNO(2)Ph) hydrazone were obtained and fully characterized, as well as their zinc(II) complexes [Zn(H2BzPh)Cl(2)] (1), [Zn(H2BzClPh)Cl(2)] (2) and [Zn(H2BzpNO(2)Ph)Cl(2)] (3). During the syntheses of complex 1 a second product crystallized, which was characterized as [Zn(2BzPh)(2)] (1a). Upon re-crystallization in 1: 9 DMSO: acetone conversion of 2 into [Zn(H2BzpClPh)Cl2] center dot H(2)O (2a) and of 3 into [Zn(2BzpNO(2)Ph)Cl(DMSO)] (3a) occurred. The crystal structures of 1a, 2a and 3a were determined. In 1a the two nearly perpendicular H2BzPh ligands give rise to a distorted octahedral environment around the metal. The 5-fold coordination around the metal is completed with two chloride ions in 2a and with one chloride and one oxygen atom from DMSO in 3a. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The synthesis, an improved refined crystal and molecular structure re-determination, and the thermal decomposition behavior of two Zn(II) derivatives of isocinchomeronic acid (2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid or H(2)2,5-pydc) are presented. [Zn(2,5-pydc)(H(2)O)(3)Zn(2,5-pydc)(H(2)O)(2)](2) (1) crystallizes in the triclinic P-1 space group with a = 7.106(2), b = 11.450(2), c = 11.869(1) angstrom, alpha = 107.29(1), beta = 104.08(1), gamma = 90.32(2)degrees, and Z = 2. [Zn(2,5-pydc)(H(2)O)(2)] center dot H(2)O (2) is orthorhombic (P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group), with a = 7.342(1), b = 9.430(1), c = 13.834(2) angstrom, and Z = 4. The structures were refined to agreement R(1)-factors of 0.0315 (1) and 0.0336 (2). Complex (1) is arranged as molecular Zn(4)(2,5-pydc)(4)(H(2)O)(10) tetramers, the cages of which define channels that remain unblocked by anions. Compound (2) is polymeric with Zn(2,5-pydc)(H(2)O)(2) and Zn(2,5-pydc)(H(2)O)(3) units linked through bridging ligands. Both compounds were synthesized under mild conditions in aqueous media, without need to resort to hydrothermal media. Changing the pH from 4.51 to 5.75 suffices to direct the chemical processes toward the orthorhombic compound rather than to the triclinic one.

The reaction Of Cu(ClO(4))(2)center dot 6H(2)O with dimethylglyoxime (H(2)dmg) in a 1:1 mole ratio in aqueous methanol at room temperature affords the dinuclear complex [Cu(2)(mu-Hdmg)(4)] (1). Reaction of 1 with [Cu(bpy)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (bpy = 2,2`-bipyridine) in a 1:1 mole ratio in aqueous methanol at room temperature yields the tetranuclear complex [Cu(2)(mu-HdMg)(2)(mu-dMg)(2)(bpy)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (2). The direct reaction of Cu(ClO(4))(2)center dot 6H(2)O with H(2)dmg and bpy in a 2:21 mole ratio in aqueous methanol at room temperature also yields 2 quantitatively. The complexes 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Unlike the binding in Ni/Co-dmg, two different types of N-O bridging modes during the oxime based metallacycle formation and stacking of square planar units have been identified in these complexes. The neutral dinuclear complex 1 has CuN(4)O coordination spheres and complex 2 consists of a dicationic [Cu(2)(mu-HdMg)(2)(mu-dMg)(2)(bpy)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](2+) unit and two uncoordinated ClO(4)(-) anions having CuN(4)O and CuN(2)O(3) coordination spheres. The two copper(II) ions are at a distance of 3.846(8) angstrom in 1 for the trans out of plane link and at 3.419(10) and 3.684(10) angstrom in 2 for the trans out of plane and cis in plane arrangements, respectively. The average Cu-N(oxime) distances are 1.953 and 1.935 angstrom, respectively. The average basal and apical Cu-N(oxime) distances are 1.945, 2.295 and 2.429 angstrom. The UV-Vis spectra of 2 is similar to the spectrum of the reaction mixture of 1 and [Cu(bpy)(H(2)O)(2)](2+). Variable temperature magnetic properties measurement shows that the interaction between the paramagnetic copper centers in complex I is antiferromagnetic in nature. The EPR spectra of frozen solution of the complexes at 77 K consist of axially symmetric fine-structure transitions (Delta M(S) = 1) and half-field signals (Delta M(S) = 2) at ca. 1600 G, suggesting the presence of appreciable Cu-Cu interactions. Highly stable and crystalline V(2)O(5) nanoparticles with an average diameter of 15 nm have been easily prepared by thermal treatment of a bariandite-like vanadium oxide, V(10)O(24)center dot 9H(2)O. Their characterization was carried out by powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The fibrous and nanostructured film obtained by electrophoretic deposition of the V(2)O(5) nanoparticles showed good electroactivity when submitted to cyclic voltammetry in an ionic liquid-based electrolyte. The use of this film for the preparation of a nanostructured electrode led to an improvement of about 50% in discharge capacity values when compared with similar electrodes obtained by casting of a V(2)O(5) xerogel. The synthesis and characterization of lanthanide(III) citrates with stoichiometries 1:1 and 2:3; [LnL center dot xH(2)O] and [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O], Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu are reported. L stands for (C6O7H5)(3-) and LH for (C6O7H6)(2-). Infrared absorption spectra of both series evidence coordination of carboxylate groups through symmetric bridges or chelation. X-ray powder patterns show the amorphous character of [LnL center dot xH(2)O]. The compounds [Ln(2)LH(3)center dot 2H(2)O] are crystalline and isomorphous. Emission spectra of Eu compounds suggest C-2v symmetry for the coordination polyhedron of [LnL center dot xH(2)O] and C-4v for [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O]. Thermal analyses (TG-DTG-DTA) were carried out for both series. The thermal analysis patterns of the two series are quite different and both fit in a 4-step model of thermal decomposition, with lanthanide oxides as final products.

P>This study aimed to verify the effect of modified section method and laser-welding on the accuracy of fit of ill-fitting commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) and Ni-Cr alloy one-piece cast frameworks. Two sets of similar implant-supported frameworks were constructed. Both groups of six 3-unit implant-supported fixed partial dentures were cast as one-piece [I: Ni-Cr (control) and II: cp Ti] and evaluated for passive fitting in an optical microscope with both screws tightened and with only one screw tightened. All frameworks were then sectioned in the diagonal axis at the pontic region (III: Ni-Cr and IV: cp Ti). Sectioned frameworks were positioned in the matrix (10-Ncm torque) and laser-welded. Passive fitting was evaluated for the second time. Data were submitted to anova and Tukey-Kramer honestly significant difference tests (P < 0 center dot 05). With both screws tightened, one-piece cp Ti group II showed significantly higher misfit values (27 center dot 57 +/- 5 center dot 06 mu m) than other groups (I: 11 center dot 19 +/- 2 center dot 54 mu m, III: 12 center dot 88 +/- 2 center dot 93 mu m, IV: 13 center dot 77 +/- 1 center dot 51 mu m) (P < 0 center dot 05). In the single-screw-tightened test, with readings on the opposite side to the tightened side, Ni-Cr cast as one-piece (I: 58 center dot 66 +/- 14 center dot 30 mu m) was significantly different from cp Ti group after diagonal section (IV: 27 center dot 51 +/- 8 center dot 28 mu m) (P < 0 center dot 05). On the tightened side, no significant differences were found between groups (P > 0 center dot 05). Results showed that diagonally sectioning ill-fitting cp Ti frameworks lowers misfit levels of prosthetic implant-supported frameworks and also improves passivity levels of the same frameworks when compared to one-piece cast structures.

The effects of iron ions on dielectric properties of lithium sodium phosphate glasses were studied by non-usual, fast and non-destructive microwave techniques. The dielectric constant (epsilon`). insertion loss (L) and microwave absorption spectra (microwave response) of the selected glass system xFe(2)O(3)center dot(1 - x)(50P(2)O5 center dot 25Li(2)O center dot 25Na(2)O), being x = 0, 3, 6, ....,15 expressed in mol.%, were investigated. The dielectric constant of the samples was investigated at 9.00 GHz using the shorted-line method (SLM) giving the minimum value of epsilon` = 2.10 +/- 0.02 at room temperature, and increasing further with x, following a given law. It was observed a gradual increasing slope Of E in the temperature range of 25 <= t <= 330 degrees C, at the frequency of 9.00 GHz. Insertion loss (measured at 9.00 GHz) and measurements of microwave energy attenuation, at frequencies ranging from 8.00 to 12.00 GHz were also studied as a function of iron content in the glass samples. Microwave techniques were applied to the study of dielectric properties of phosphate glasses on the basis of contributions from permanent and induced dipolar polarization of local structural units interacting with the electrical component of the electromagnetic radiation. The dielectric constant of the selected glass system (100-x)(50P(2)O(5)center dot 25Li(2)O center dot 25Na(2)O)center dot xFe(2)O(3), where 0 <= x <= 21 is in mol%, was measured using a microwave setup assembled to measure the phase shift of the standing wave pattern produced by the insertion of the sample. It is shown that the Fe2+ ions contribute effectively to the dielectric constant, as expected from the interactions of the dipoles of the local charge compensation pairs with the microwave radiation. However, there is the possibility of occurrence of some ions Fe3+, in general, at low iron content, which reinforces the glass structure and, therefore, decreases the dielectric constant. There is a gradual conversion from Fe3+ to Fe2+ as the iron ions increases. This is possibly the reason of the anomaly in the dielectric constant values observed in the results. These assumptions can be checked by results of electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical absorption (OA). The dielectric constant of the glasses studied in this work was found to increase with the temperature in the range of 25-330 degrees C. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are metabolic by products of anerobic bacteria fermentation. These fatty acids, despite being an important fuel for colonocytes, are also modulators of leukocyte function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of SCFAs (acetate, propionate, and butyrate) on function of neutrophils, and the possible mechanisms involved. Neutrophils obtained from rats by intraperitoneal lavage 4 h after injection of oyster glycogen solution (1%) were treated with non toxic concentrations of the fatty acids. After that, the following measurements were performed: phagocytosis and destruction of Candida albicans, production of ROS (O(2)(center dot-), H(2)O(2), and HOCl) and degranulation. Gene expression (p47(phox) and p22(phox)) and protein phosphorylation (p47(phox)) were analyzed by real time reverse transcriptase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blotting, respectively. Butyrate inhibited phagocytosis and killing of C. albicans. This SCFA also had an inhibitory effect on production of O(2)(center dot-), H(2)O(2), and HOCI by neutrophils stimulated with PMA or fMLP. This effect of butyrate was not caused by modulation of expression of NADPH oxidase subunits (p47(phox) and p22(phox)) but it was in part due to reduced levels of p47(phox) phosphorylation and an increase in the concentration of cyclic AMP. Acetate increased the production of O(2)(center dot-) and H(2)O(2), in the absence of stimuli but had no effect on phagocytosis and killing of C. albicans. Propionate had no effect on the parameters studied. These results suggest that butyrate can modulate neutrophil function, and thus could be important in inflammatory neutrophil-associated diseases. Two series of lanthanide oxides with different morphologies were synthesized through calcinations of two types of citrate polymeric precursors. These oxides were characterized by XRD patterns, SEM electronic microscopy, and N(2) adsorption isotherms. SEM microscopy analysis showed that the calcination of crystalline fibrous precursors [Ln(2)(LH)(3)center dot 2H(2)O] (L = citrate) originated fibrous shaped particles. On the other hand, the calcination of irregular shaped particles of precursors [LnL center dot xH(2)O] originated irregular shaped particles of oxide, pointing out a morphological template effect of precursors on the formation of the respective oxides.

Ancient potteries usually are made of the local clay material, which contains relatively high concentration of iron. The powdered samples are usually quite black, due to magnetite, and, although they can be used for thermoluminescene (TL) dating, it is easiest to obtain better TL reading when clearest natural or pre-treated sample is used. For electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, the huge signal due to iron spin-spin interaction, promotes an intense interference overlapping any other signal in this range. Sample dating is obtained by dividing the radiation dose, determined by the concentration of paramagnetic species generated by irradiation, by the natural dose so as a consequence, EPR dating cannot be used, since iron signal do not depend on radiation dose. In some cases, the density separation method using hydrated solution of sodium polytungstate [Na(G)(H(2)W(12)O(40))center dot H(2)O] becomes useful. However, the sodium polytungstate is very expensive in Brazil: hence an alternative method for eliminating this interference is proposed. A chemical process to eliminate about 90% of magnetite was developed. A sample of powdered ancient pottery was treated in a mixture (3:1:1) of HCI, HNO(3) and H(2)O(2) for 4 h. After that, it was washed several times in distilled water to remove all acid matrixes. The original black sample becomes somewhat clearer. The resulting material was analyzed by plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), with the result that the iron content is reduced by a factor of about 9. In EPR measurements a non-treated natural ceramic sample shows a broad spin-spin interaction signal, the chemically treated sample presents a narrow signal in g= 2.00 region, possibly due to a radical of (SiO(3))(3-), mixed with signal of remaining iron [M. lkeya, New Applications of Electron Spin Resonance, World Scientific, Singapore, 1993, p. 285]. This signal increases in intensity under -gamma-irradiation. However, still due to iron influence, the additive method yielded too old age-value. Since annealing at 300 degrees C, Toyoda and Ikeya IS. Toyoda, M. Ikeya, Geochem. J. 25 (1991) 427-445] states that E `(1)-signal with maximum intensity is obtained, while annealing at 400 degrees C E`(1)-signal is completely eliminated, the subtraction of the second one from 300 degrees C heat-treated sample isolate E`(1)-like signal. Since this is radiation dose-dependent, we show that now EPR dating becomes possible. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A systematic study was made of the synthesis of V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O nanostructures, whose morphologies, crystal structure, and amount of water molecules between the layered structures were regulated by strictly controlling the hydrothermal treatment variables. The synthesis involved a direct hydrothermal reaction between V(2)O(5) and H(2)O(2), without the addition of organic surfactant or inorganic ions. The experimental results indicate that high purity nanostructures can be obtained using this simple and clean synthetic route. Oil the basis of a study of hydrothermal treatment variables such as reaction temperature and time, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) revealed that it was possible to obtain nanoribbons of the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O monoclinic phase and nanowires or nanorods of the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O orthorhombic phase. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) shows also that the water content in the Structure call be controlled at appropriate hydrothermal conditions. Concerning the oxidation state of the vanadium atoms of as-obtained samples, a mixed-valence state composed of V(4+) and V(5+) was observed ill the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O monoclinic phase, while the valence of the vanadium atoms was preferentially 5+ in the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O orthorhombic phase. The X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) results also indicated that the local structure of vanadium possessed a higher degree of symmetry in the V(2)O(5)center dot nH(2)O monoclinic phase.

Cyclization of thiosemicarbazones derived from beta-keto esters and beta-keto amides (HTSC) in the presence of diphenyllead(IV) acetate was explored in methanol solution at room temperature and under reflux. All beta-keto ester TSCs underwent cyclization to give the corresponding pyrazolone (HL), which, except in one case, deprotonated and coordinated the PbPh(2)(2+) moiety to form homoleptic [PbPh(2)(L)(2)] or heteroleptic [PbPh(2)(OAc)(L)] derivatives. Cyclization did not occur with beta-keto amide TSCs and only [Pbph(2)(TSC)(2)] or [PbPh(2)(OAc)(TSC)] thiosernicarbazonates were isolated. The complexes were characterized by IR spectroscopy in the solid state and by (1)H, (13)C and (207)Pb NMR spectroscopy in DMSO-d(G) solution, in which they evolve and decompose with time. Additionally, crystals of p-acetoacetanisidide thiosemicarbazone (HTSC(10)), [PbPh(2)(OAc)(L(5))] center dot MeOH (HL(5) = 2,5-dihydro-3,4-dimethyl-5-oxo-1H-pyrazolone-1-carbothioamide), [PbPh(2)Cl(L(2))] (HL(2) = 2,5-dihydro-5-oxo-3-phenyl-1H-pyrazolone-1-carbothioamide), [PbPh(2)(OAc)(TSC(8))]center dot 2MeOH (HTSC(8) = acetoacetanilide thiosemicarbazone), [PbPh(2)(OAc)(TSC(10))]center dot H(2)O and [PbPh(2)(OAc)(TSC(11))] center dot 0.75MeOH (HTSO(11) = o-acetoacetotoluidide) were studied by X-ray crystallography. The complexes, monomers or dimers with almost linear C-Pb-C moieties, are compared with the corresponding derivatives of Pb(II). (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Five novel organotin complexes with the anthraquinone dyes alizarin (1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone) and purpurin (1,2,4-trihydroxyanthraquinone) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR and NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C and (119)Sn). The crystal and Molecular structures Of four complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction on single crystals: [Bu(2)Sn(aliz)(H(2)O)]center dot C(2)H(5)OH (A1 center dot EtO H), [Bu(2)Sn(aliz)(dmso)](2) (A3), [(Bu(2)Sn)(3)O(Hpurp)(2)] (P1) and [Bu(2)Sn(Hpurp)(dmso)](2) (P2), where H(2)aliz = alizarin and H(3)purp = purpurin. The coordination mode of the ligands is identical to that found in their Al/Ca complexes, where they act as dianionic tridentate ligands forming five and six-membered fused chelate rings. The coordination to the tin atoms occurs exclusively via the 1,2- phenolate oxygen and the adjacent quinoid oxygen atoms. The complexes A1, A3 and P1 are dimers with hepta-coordinated tin atoms in form of a slightly distorted pentagonal bipyramid. The trinuclear complex P2 contains two pentacoordinated and one heptacoordinated tin atoms.

A series of palladium(II) thiosaccharinates with triphenylphosphane (PPh(3)), bis(diphenylphosphanyl)methane (dppm), and bis(diphenylphosphanyl)ethane (dppe) have been prepared and characterized. From mixtures of thiosaccharin, Htsac, and palladium(II) acetylacetonate, Pd(acac)(2), the palladium(II) thiosaccharinate, Pd(tsac)(2) (tsac: thiosaccharinate anion) (1) was prepared. The reaction of I with PPh(3), dppm, and dppe leads to the mononuclear species Pd(tsac)(2)(PPh(3))(2)center dot MeCN (2), [Pd(tsac)(2)(dppm)] (3), Pd(tsac)(2)(dppm)(2) (4), and [Pd(tsac)(2)(dppe)]center dot MeCN (5). Compounds 2, 4, and 5 have been prepared also by the reaction of Pd(acac)(2) with the corresponding phosphane and Htsac. All the new complexes have been characterized by chemical analysis, UV/Vis, IR, and Raman spectroscopy. Some of them have been also characterized by NMR spectroscopy. The crystalline structures of complexes 3, and 5 have been studied by X-ray diffraction techniques. Complex 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 16.3537(2), b = 13.3981(3), c = 35.2277(7) angstrom, beta = 91.284(1)degrees, and Z = 8 molecules per unit cell, and complex 5 in P2(1)/n with a = 10.6445(8), b = 26.412(3), c = 15.781(2) angstrom, beta = 107.996(7)degrees, and Z = 4. In compounds 3 and 5, the palladium ions are in a distorted square planar environment. They are closely related, having two sulfur atoms of two thiosaccharinate anions, and two phosphorus atoms of one molecule of dppm or dppe, respectively, bonded to the Pd(II) atom. The molecular structure of complex 3 is the first reported for a mononuclear Pd(II)-dppm-thionate system.
