Tetra-alkoxysilanes are common and useful reagents in sol-gel processes and understanding their reactivity is important in the design of new materials. The mechanism of gas-phase reactions that mimic alcoholyis of Si(OMe)(4) (usually known as TMOS) under acidic conditions have been studied by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance techniques and density functional calculations at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level. The proton affinity of TMOS has been estimated at 836.4 kJ mol(-1) and protonation of TMOS gives rise to an ionic species that is best represented as trimethoxysilyl cations associated with a methanol molecule. Protonated TMOS undergoes rapid and sequential substitution of the methoxy groups in the gas-phase upon reaction with alcohols. The calculated energy profile of the reaction indicates that the substitution reaction through an S(N)2 type mechanism may be more favorable than frontal attack at silicon. Furthermore, the sequential substitution reactions are promoted by a mechanism that involves proton shuttle from the most favorable protonation site to the oxygen of the departing group mediated by the neutral reagent molecule.

This work reports a state-of-the-art theoretical characterization of four new sulfur-bromine species and five transition states on the [H, S(2), Br] potential energy surface. Our highest level theoretical approach employed the method coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative contributions of connected triples, CCSD(T), along with the series of correlation-consistent basis sets and with extrapolation to the complete basis set (CBS) limit in the optimization of the geometrical parameters and to quantify the energetic quantities. The structural and vibrational frequencies here reported are unique and represent the most accurate investigation to date of these species. The global minimum corresponds to a skewed structure HSSBr with a disulfide bond; this is followed by a pyramidal-like structure, SSHBr, 18.85 kcal/mol above the minimum. Much higher in energy, we found another skewed structure, HSBrS (50.29 kcal/mol), with one S-Br dative-type bond, and another pyramidal-like one, HBrSS (109.80 kcal/mol), with two S-Br dative-type bonds. The interconversion of HSSBr into SSHBr can occur via a transfer of either the hydrogen or the bromine atom but involves a very high barrier of about 43 kcal/mol. These molecules are potentially a new route of coupling the sulfur and bromine chemistry in the atmosphere, and conditions of high concentration of H(2)S like in volcanic eruptions might contribute to their formation. We note that HSSBr can act as a reservoir molecule for the reaction between the radicals HSS and Br. Also, an assessment of the methods DFT/B3LYP/CBS and MP2/CBS relative to CCSD(T)/CBS provides insights on the expected performance of these methods on the characterization of polysulfides and also of more complex systems containing disulfide bridges.

The (1)H NMR spectra of N-methoxy-N-methyl-2-[(4`-substituted)phenylsulfinyl]-propanamides [Y-Ph-S(O)CH(Me)C(O)N(OMe)Me; Y = OMe 1, Me 2, H 3. Cl 4, NO(2) 5] along with the X-ray diffraction analysis of the nitro-derivative (5). have shown the existence of two pairs of diastereomers (racemic mixture) [C(R)S(S)/C(S)S(R) (diast(1)) and C(R)S(R)/C(S)S(S) (diast(2))] in the ratio of ca. 7:3. respectively. The v(CO) IR analysis of the title compounds supported by HF and B3LYP/6-31G** calculations of 3 and of the parent N-methoxy-N-methyl-propanamide (6) by HF, have shown that diast(1) exists in an equilibrium between the two more polar and more stable quasi-cis (q-c(1) and q-c(2)) conformers and the gauche(g) conformer. The population of the g conformer in the equilibrium increases with the increase in the solvent polarity, which is attributed to a larger solvation effect on the carbonyl and sulfinyl groups. Diast(2) of compound 3 occurs in the gas phase as an equilibrium between the most stable quasi-gauche (q-g) conformer and the quasi-cis (q-c) conformer, both presenting very similar dipole moments. The former is stabilized by electrostatic and charge transfer interactions, which results in a less solvated spatial arrangement. Moreover, all conformers of both diastereomers are stabilized by several intramolecular hydrogen bonds. X-ray single crystal analysis performed for diast(1) and for diast(2) of 5 indicates that both stereoisomers assume, in the solid state, the anti-clinal (gauche) conformation. For the crystal packing, diast(1) of 5 is made up of three molecules joined through two centro-symmetric H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The structure of 7,4`-dimethoxy-3`-acetylflavone (tithonin-Ac) has been determined by X-ray diffraction and its geometry is compared with optimized geometrical parameters obtained by means of density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of calculation. in addition, vertical ionization potential (IPv) and acidity for tithonin-Ac and two derivatives have been also calculated. Calculations of spin densities were also performed for the radical formed by the electron abstraction of other flavones. The unpaired electron is located on C3 carbon atom (21-25%). Julocrotine, N-(2,6-dioxo-l-phenethyl-piperidin-3-yl)-2-methyl-butyramide, is a potent antiproliferative agent against the promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis (L.). In this work, the crystal structure of Julocrotine was solved by X-ray diffraction, and its geometrical parameters were compared with theoretical calculations at the B3LYP and HF level of theory. IR and NMR spectra also have been obtained and compared with theoretical calculations. IR absorptions calculated with the B3LYP level of theory employed together with the 6-311G+(d,p) basis set, are close to those observed experimentally. Theoretical NMR calculations show little deviation from experimental results. The results show that the theory is in accordance with the experimental data. (C) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We employed the Density Functional Theory along with small basis sets, B3LYP/LANL2DZ, for the study of FeTIM complexes with different pairs of axial ligands (CO, H(2)O, NH(3), imidazole and CH(3)CN). These calculations did not result in relevant changes of molecular quantities as bond lengths, vibrational frequencies and electronic populations supporting any significant back-donation to the carbonyl or acetonitrile axial ligands. Moreover, a back-donation mechanism to the macrocycle cannot be used to explain the observed changes in molecular properties along these complexes with CO or CH(3)CN. This work also indicates that complexes with CO show smaller binding energies and are less stable than complexes with CH(3)CN. Further, the electronic band with the largest intensity in the visible region (or close to this region) is associated to the transition from an occupied 3d orbital on iron to an empty pi* orbital located at the macrocycle. The energy of this Metal-to-Ligand Charge Transfer (MLCT) transition shows a linear relation to the total charge of the macrocycle in these complexes as given by Mulliken or Natural Population Analysis (NPA) formalisms. Finally, the macrocycle total charge seems to be influenced by the field induced by the axial ligands. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Quantum mechanical calculations at the B3LYP theory level, together with the 6-31G* basis set, were employed to obtain the energy, ionization potential, and polarizabilites for dipyridamole and derivatives, which are compared with their biological activity. Density functional calculations of the spin densities were performed for radical formed by electron abstraction of dipyridamole and derivatives. The unpaired electron remains in dipyridamole is localized on the nitrogen atoms in the substituent positions 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, with participation of the 9 and 10 carbons in the pyrimido-pyrimidine ring. The antioxidant activity is related with ionization potential, polarizability and Log P.

Four new diorganotin(IV) complexes have been prepared from R(2)SnCl(2) (R = Me, Ph) with the ligands 5-hydroxy-3-metyl-5-phenyl-1-(S-benzildithiocarbazate)-pyrazoline (H(2)L(1)) and 5-hydroxy-3-methyl-5-phenyl-1-(2-thiophenecarboxylic)-pyrazoline (H(2)L(2)). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR. (1)H (13)C, (119)Sn NMR and Mossbauer spectroscopes The complexes [Me(2)SnL(1)], [Ph(2)SnL(1)] and [Me(2)SnL(2)] were also studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and the results showed that the Sn(IV) central atom of the complexes adopts a distorted trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) geometry with the N atom of the ONX-tridentate (X = O and S) ligand and two organic groups occupying equatorial sites. The C-Sn-C angles for [Me(2)Sn(L(1))] and [Ph(2)Sn(L(1))] were calculated using a correlation between (119)Sn Mossbauer and X-ray crystallographic data based on the point-charge model Theoretical calculations were performed with the B3LYP density functional employing 3-21G(*) and DZVP all electron basis sets showing good agreement with experimental findings General and Sn(IV) specific IR harmonic frequency scale factors for both basis sets were obtained from comparison with selected experimental frequencies (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

B3LYP/6-31 + G(d) calculations were employed to investigate the mechanism of the transesterification reaction between a model monoglyceride and the methoxide and ethoxide anions. The gas-phase results reveal that both reactions have essentially the same activation energy (5.9 kcal mol(-1)) for decomposition of the key tetrahedral intermediate. Solvent effects were included by means of both microsolvation and the polarizable continuum solvation model CPCM. Both solvent approaches reduce the activation energy, however, only the microsolvation model is able to introduce some differentiation between methanol and ethanol, yielding a lower activation energy for decomposition of the tetrahedral intermediate in the reaction with methanol (1.1 kcal mol(-1)) than for the corresponding reaction with ethanol (2.8 kcal mol(-1)), in line with experimental evidences. Analysis of the individual energy components within the CPCM approach reveals that electrostatic interactions are the main contribution to stabilization of the transition state.
