Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometers (ICP DES) allow fast simultaneous measurements of several spectral lines for multiple elements. The combination of signal intensities of two or more emission lines for each element may bring such advantages as improvement of the precision, the minimization of systematic errors caused by spectral interferences and matrix effects. In this work, signal intensities for several spectral lines were combined for the determination of Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Pb, and Zn in water. Afterwards, parameters for evaluation of the calibration model were calculated to select the combination of emission lines leading to the best accuracy (lowest values of PRESS-Predicted error sum of squares and RMSEP-Root means square error of prediction). Limits of detection (LOD) obtained using multiple lines were 7.1, 0.5, 4.4, 0.042, 3.3, 28 and 6.7 mu g L(-1) (n = 10) for Al, Cd. Co, Cr, Mn, Pb and Zn, respectively, in the presence of concomitants. On the other hand, the LOD established for the most intense emission line were 16. 0.7, 8.4, 0.074. 23, 26 and 9.6 mu g L(-1) (n = 10) for these same elements in the presence of concomitants. The accuracy of the developed procedure was demonstrated using water certified reference material. The use of multiple lines improved the sensitivity making feasible the determination of these analytes according to the target values required for the current environmental legislation for water samples and it was also demonstrated that measurements in multiple lines can also be employed as a tool to verify the accuracy of an analytical procedure in ICP DES. Background: Although the Clock Drawing Test (CDT) is the second most used test in the world for the screening of dementia, there is still debate over its sensitivity specificity, application and interpretation in dementia diagnosis. This study has three main aims: to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the CDT in a sample composed of older adults with Alzheimer`s disease (AD) and normal controls; to compare CDT accuracy to the that of the Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Cambridge Cognitive Examination (CAMCOG), and to test whether the association of the MMSE with the CDT leads to higher or comparable accuracy as that reported for the CAMCOG. Methods: Cross-sectional assessment was carried out for 121 AD and 99 elderly controls with heterogeneous educational levels from a geriatric outpatient clinic who completed the Cambridge Examination for Mental Disorder of the Elderly (CAMDEX). The CDT was evaluated according to the Shulman, Mendez and Sunderland scales. Results: The CDT showed high sensitivity and specificity. There were significant correlations between the CDT and the MMSE (0.700-0.730; p < 0.001) and between the CDT and the CAMCOG (0.753-0.779; p < 0.001). The combination of the CDT with the MMSE improved sensitivity and specificity (SE = 89.2-90%; SP = 71.7-79.8%). Subgroup analysis indicated that for elderly people with lower education, sensitivity and specificity were both adequate and high. Conclusions: The CDT is a robust screening test when compared with the MMSE or the CAMCOG, independent of the scale used for its interpretation. The combination with the MMSE improves its performance significantly, becoming equivalent to the CAMCOG.

Intense physical training and dietary energy restriction have been associated with consequences such as nutritional amenorrhea. We investigated the effects of intense physical training, food restriction or the combination of both strategies on estrous cyclicity in female rats, and the relationship between leptin ad these effects. Twenty-seven female Wistar rats were distributed into four groups: SF: sedentary, fed ad libitum; SR: sedentary subjected to 50% food restriction (based on the food intake of their fed counterparts); TF: trained (physical training on a motor treadmill with a gradual increase in speed and time), fed ad libitum; TR; trained with 50% food restriction. We analysed estrous cyclicity, plasma leptin and estradiol as well as chemical composition of the carcass, body weight variation. and weight of ovaries and perirenal adipose tissue. Data demonstrate that physical training alone was not responsible for significant modifications in either carcass chemical composition or reproductive function. Food restriction reduced leptin levels in all animals and interrupted the estrous cyclicity in some animals, but only the combination of food restriction and physical training was capable of interrupting the estrous cyclicity in all animals. Leptin was not directly related to estrous cyclicity. From our findings, it may be concluded that there is an additive or synergistic effect of energy intake restriction and energy expenditure by intense physical training on estrous cyclicity. Leptin appears to be one among others factors related to estrous cycle, but it probably acts indirectly.

A rapid method for classification of mineral waters is proposed. The discrimination power was evaluated by a novel combination of chemometric data analysis and qualitative multi-elemental fingerprints of mineral water samples acquired from different regions of the Brazilian territory. The classification of mineral waters was assessed using only the wavelength emission intensities obtained by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES), monitoring different lines of Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cl, Cu, Co, Cr, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, S, Sb, Si, Sr, Ti, V, and Zn, and Be, Dy, Gd, In, La, Sc and Y as internal standards. Data acquisition was done under robust (RC) and non-robust (NRC) conditions. Also, the combination of signal intensities of two or more emission lines for each element were evaluated instead of the individual lines. The performance of two classification-k-nearest neighbor (kNN) and soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA)-and preprocessing algorithms, autoscaling and Pareto scaling, were evaluated for the ability to differentiate between the various samples in each approach tested (combination of robust or non-robust conditions with use of individual lines or sum of the intensities of emission lines). It was shown that qualitative ICP OES fingerprinting in combination with multivariate analysis is a promising analytical tool that has potential to become a recognized procedure for rapid authenticity and adulteration testing of mineral water samples or other material whose physicochemical properties (or origin) are directly related to mineral content.

Background: The involvement of nephrotoxic agents in acute renal failure (ARF) has increased over the last few decades. Among the drugs associated with nephrotoxic ARF are the radiologic contrast media whose nephrotoxic effects have grown, following the increasing diagnostic use of these agents. Methods: We evaluated the effect of iodinated contrast (IC) medium, administered in combination, or not, with hyperhydration or N-acetylcysteine (NAC), on creatinine clearance, production of urinary peroxides and renal histology of rats. Adult Wistar rats treated for 5 days were divided into the following groups: control (saline, 3 ml/kg/day, intraperitoneally [i.p.]), IC (sodium iothalamate meglumine, 3 ml/kg/day i.p.), IC + water (12 mL water, orally + IC, 3 ml/kg/day i.p. after 1 hour), IC + NAC (NAC, 150 mg/kg/day, orally + IC, 3 ml/kg/day i.p. after 1 hour) and IC + water + NAC. Results: IC medium reduced renal function, with maintenance of urinary flow. Hyperhydration did not reduce the nephrotoxic effect of the IC agent, which was observed in the group IC + NAC. The combination of hyperhydration and NAC had no superior protective effect compared with NAC alone. An increase in urinary peroxides was observed in the IC group, with NAC or water or the combination of both reducing this parameter. Histopathologic analysis revealed no significant alterations. Conclusions: In summary, given 5 days previously, NAC was found to be more effective than hyperhydration alone in the prevention of contrast-induced acute renal failure.

The purpose of our study was to determine if vascular Occlusion produced an additive effect on muscle hypertrophy and strength performance with high strength training loads. Sixteen physically active men were divided into two groups: high-intensity (HI = 6 RM) and moderate-intensity training (MI = 12 RM). An occlusion cuff was attached to the proximal end of the right thigh, so that blood flow was reduced during the exercise. The left leg served as a control, thus was trained without vascular occlusion. Knee extension 1 RM and quadriceps cross-sectional area (MRI) were evaluated pre- and post-8 weeks of training. We only found a main time effect for both strength gains and quadriceps hypertrophy (p < 0.001). Therefore, we conclude that vascular occlusion in combination with high-intensity strength training does not augment muscle strength or hypertrophy when compared to high-intensity strength training alone.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) have become a fast-growing worldwide expansion of martial arts competition, requiring high level of skill, physical conditioning, and strategy, and involving a synthesis of combat while standing or on the ground. This study quantified the effort-pause ratio (EP), and classified effort segments of stand-up or groundwork development to identify the number of actions performed per round in MMA matches. 52 MMA athletes participated in the study (M age = 24 yr., SD = 5; average experience in MMA = 5 yr., SD = 3). A one-way analysis of variance with repeated measurements was conducted to compare the type of action across the rounds. A chi-squared test was applied across the percentages to compare proportions of different events. Only one significant difference (p < .05) was observed among rounds: time in groundwork of low intensity was longer in the second compared to the third round. When the interval between rounds was not considered, the EP ratio (between high-intensity effort to low-intensity effort plus pauses) WE S 1:2 to 1:4. This ratio is between ratios typical for judo, wrestling, karate, and taekwondo and reflects the combination of ground and standup techniques. Most of the matches ended in the third round, involving high-intensity actions, predominantly executed during groundwork combat.

In order to evaluate the effects of uncertainty about direction of mechanical perturbation and supra-postural task constraint on postural control young adults had their upright stance perturbed while holding a tray in a horizontal position Stance was perturbed by moving forward or backward a supporting platform contrasting situations of certainty versus uncertainty of direction of displacement Increased constraint on postural stability was Imposed by a supra-postural task of equilibrating a cylinder on the tray Performance was assessed through EMG of anterior leg muscles angular displacement of the main Joints involved in the postural reactions and displacement of the tray Results showed that both certainty on the direction of perturbation and Increased supra-postural task constraint led to decreased angular displacement of the knee and the hip Furthermore combination of certainty and high supra-postural task constraint produced shorter latency of muscular activation Such postural responses were paralleled by decreased displacement of the tray Thesi results suggest a functional integration between the tasks with central set priming reactive postural responses from contextual cues and Increased stability demand (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

The goal of this study was to examine the coupling between visual information and body sway with binocular and monocular vision at two distances from the front wall of a moving room. Ten participants stood as still as possible inside of a moving room facing the front wall in conditions that combined room movement with monocular/binocular vision and distance from the front wall (75 and 150cm). Visual information effect on body sway decreased with monocular vision and with increased distance from the front wall. In addition, the combination of monocular vision with the farther distance resulted in the smallest body sway response to the driving stimulus provided by the moving room. These results suggest that binocularvision near the front wall provides visual information of a better quality than the monocular vision far from the front wall. We discuss the results with respect to two modes of visual detection of body sway: ocular and extraocular. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

One mannanase and one of the three xylanases produced by Ceriporiopsis subvermispora grown on Pinus taeda wood chips were characterized. A combination of ion exchange chromatography and SDS-PAGE data revealed the existence of a high-molecular-weight mannanase of 150 kDa that was active against galactoglucomannan and xylan, Its activity was optimal at pH 4.5. The K(m) value with galactoglucomannan as substrate was 0.50 mg ml (1). One xylanase with molecular mass of 79 kDa was also purified and characterized. Its activity was optimal at 60 degrees C and pH 8.0. Its K(m) value with birchwood xylan as substrate was 1.65 mg ml (1). Both the mannanase and the 79 kDa xylanase displayed relatively high activity on carboxymethyl cellulose. The sensitivity of the xylanase and mannanase to various salts was evaluated. None of the tested salts inhibited the xylanase, but Mn(+2), Fe(+3), and Cu(+2) were strong inhibitors for the mannanase. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The objective of this work was to characterize the delignification effluent originating from the delignification industry and evaluate the combination of the fungus and photocatalytic process (TiO(2)/UV system) for the treatment of this effluent. The delignification effluent has proven harmful to the environment because it presents high color (3516 CU), total phenol (876 mg/L and TOC (1599 mg/L) and is also highly toxic even in a low concentration. The results of photocatalysis were 11%, 25% and 13% higher for reductions in color, total phenol and TOC, respectively. The combined treatments presented benefits when compared to the non-combined treatments. Fungus and photocatalysis in combination proved to be the best treatment, reducing the color, total phenol, toxicity (inhibition of Escherichia coli growth) and TOC by 94.2%, 92.6%, 4.9% and 62%, respectively. Hybrid matrices of polysiloxane-polyvinyl alcohol (POS-PVA) were prepared by sol-gel technique using different concentrations of the organic component (polyvinyl alcohol, PVA) in the synthesis medium. The goal was to prepare carriers for immobilizing enzyme by taking into consideration properties as hardness, mean pore diameter, specific surface area and pore size distribution. The matrices were activated with sodium metaperiodate to render functional groups for binding the lipase from Candida rugosa, used here as a study model. Results showed that low proportion of PVA gave POS-PVA with low surface area and pore volume, although with higher hardness. The chemical activation decreased the pore volume and increased the pore size with a decrease on the surface area of about 60-75%. The matrices for enzyme immobilization were chosen considering the best combination of high surface area and hardness. Thus, the POS-PVA prepared with 5.56 x 10(-5) M of PVA with a surface area of 123 m(2)/g and hardness of 71 HV (50 gf 30 s) was shown to be suitable to immobilize the lipase, with an immobilization yield of about 40%. Different gelation times (4, 18, 24 and 48 h) were used for the preparation of silica sol-gel supports and encapsulated Candida rugosa lipase using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as precursor. The hydrophobic matrices and immobilized lipases produced were characterized with regard to pore volume and size by nitrogen adsorption (BJH method), weight loss upon heating (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), chemical composition (FTIR) and percentage of hydrolysis (POH%) of olive oil. These structural parameters were found to change with the gelation time, but no direct relation was found between the percentage of oil hydrolysis (POH%) and the gelation time. The best combination of high thermal stability and high POH% (99.5%) occurred for encapsulated lipase produced with 24 h gelation time. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effects of alkaline treatments of the wheat straw with sodium hydroxide were investigated. The optimal condition for extraction of hemicelluloses was found to be with 0.50 mol/l sodium hydroxide at 55C for 2 h. This resulted in the release of 17.3% of hemicellulose (% dry starting material), corresponding to the dissolution of 49.3% of the original hemicellulose. The yields were determined by gravimetric analysis and expressed as a proportion of the starting material. Chemical composition and physico-chemical properties of the samples of hemicelluloses were elucidated by a combination of sugar analyses, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and thermal analysis. The results showed that the treatments were very effective on the extraction of hemicelluloses from wheat straw and that the extraction intensity (expressed in terms of alkali concentration) had a great influence on the yield and chemical features of the hemicelluloses. The FTIR analysis revealed typical signal pattern for the hemicellulosic fraction in the 1,200-1,000 cm(-1) region. Bands between 1,166 and 1,000 cm(-1) are typical of xylans.

In recent years, magnetic nanoparticles have been studied due to their potential applications as magnetic carriers in biomedical area. These materials have been increasingly exploited as efficient delivery vectors, leading to opportunities of use as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents, mediators of hyperthermia cancer treatment and in targeted therapies. Much attention has been also focused on ""smart"" polymers, which are able to respond to environmental changes, such as changes in the temperature and pH. In this context, this article reviews the state-of-the art in stimuli-responsive magnetic systems for biomedical applications. The paper describes different types of stimuli-sensitive systems, mainly temperature- and pH sensitive polymers, the combination of this characteristic with magnetic properties and, finally, it gives an account of their preparation methods. The article also discusses the main in vivo biomedical applications of such materials. A survey of the recent literature on various stimuli-responsive magnetic gels in biomedical applications is also included. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
