The enzymatic kinetic resolution of tert-butyl 2-(1-hydroxyethyl) phenylcarbamate via lipase-catalyzed transesterification reaction was studied. We investigated several reaction conditions and the carbamate was resolved by Candida antarctica lipase B (CAL-B), leading to the optically pure (R)- and (S)-enantiomers. The enzymatic process showed excellent enantioselectivity (E > 200). (R)- and (S)-tert-butyl 2-(1-hydroxyethyl) phenylcarbamate were easily transformed into the corresponding (R)and (S)-1-(2-aminophenyl)ethanols.

The piperidone ring in the title compound, C(18)H(17)Cl(2)NOS(2), has a distorted half-chair conformation. The S-bound benzene rings are approximately perpendicular to and splayed out of the mean plane through the piperidone ring [dihedral angles = 71.86 (13) and 46.94 (11)degrees]. In the crystal, C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions link the molecules into [010] supramolecular chains with a helical topology. C-H center dot center dot center dot Cl and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions are also present.

The structure analysis of the title compound, C(14)H(16)O(2)S(2), shows the SMe and H atoms of the bond linking the six-membered rings to be syn and also to be syn to the bridgehead -CH(2)- group. Each of the five-membered rings adopts an envelope conformation at the bridgehead -CH(2)- group. The dione-substituted ring adopts a folded conformation about the 1,4-C center dot center dot center dot C vector, with the ketone groups lying to one side. The cyclohexene ring adopts a boat conformation.

The low-lying doublet and quartet electronic states of the species SeF correlating with the first dissociation channel are investigated theoretically at a high-level of electronic correlation treatment, namely, the complete active space self-consistent field/multireference single and double excitations configuration interaction (CASSCF/MRSDCI) using a quintuple-zeta quality basis set including a relativistic effective core potential for the selenium atom. Potential energy curves for (Lambda+S) states and the corresponding spectroscopic properties are derived that allows for an unambiguous assignment of the only spectrum known experimentally as due to a spin-forbidden X (2)Pi-a (4)Sigma(-) transition, and not a A (2)Pi-X (2)Pi transition as assumed so far. For the bound excited doublets, yet unknown experimentally, this study is the first theoretical characterization of their spectroscopic properties. Also the spin-orbit coupling constant function for the X (2)Pi state is derived as well as the spin-orbit coupling matrix element between the X (2)Pi and a (4)Sigma(-) states. Dipole moment functions and vibrationally averaged dipole moments show SeF to be a very polar species. An overview of the lowest-lying spin-orbit (Omega) states completes this description. The 1,3,4-oxadiazinane ring in the title compound, C(18)H(18)N(2)O(4), is in a twisted boat conformation. The two carbonyl groups are orientated towards the same side of the molecule. The dihedral angle between the planes of the benzene rings is 76.6 (3)degrees. Molecules are sustained in the three-dimensional structure by a combination of C-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot pi and pi-pi [shortest centroid-centroid distance = 3.672 (6) angstrom] interactions.

The 1,3,4-oxadiazinan-2-one ring in the title compound, C(12)H(13)ClN(2)O(3), is in a distorted half-chair conformation. The phenyl and chloroacetyl groups occupy axial and equatorial positions, respectively, and lie to the opposite side of the molecule to the N-bound methyl substituent. Molecules are consolidated in the crystal structure by C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions.

The cyclohexanone ring in the title compound, C(13)H(16)O(3)S, is in a distorted chair conformation. The intramolecular S center dot center dot center dot O(carbonyl) distance is 2.814 (2) angstrom. Molecules are connected into a two-dimensional array via C-H center dot center dot center dot O contacts involving the carbonyl and sulfinyl O atoms.

The piperidone ring in the title compound, C12H15NO3S, has a slightly distorted half-chair conformation with the methyl, carbonyl and phenylsulfonyl ring substituents occupying equatorial, equatorial and axial positions, respectively. Molecules are connected into centrosymmetric dimers via C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions and these associate into layers via C-H center dot center dot center dot O-S contacts. Further C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions involving both the carbonyl and sulfonyl O atoms consolidate the crystal packing by providing connections between the layers.

In the title hydrate, C(16)H(15)BrO(2)SSe center dot H(2)O, the sulfinyl O atom lies on the opposite side of the molecule to the Se and carbonyl O atoms. The benzene rings form a dihedral angle of 51.66 (17)degrees and are splayed with respect to each other. The observed conformation allows the water molecules to bridge sulfinyl O atoms via O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, generating a linear supramolecular chain along the b axis; the chain is further stabilized by C-H center dot center dot center dot O contacts. The chains are held in place in the crystal structure by C center dot center dot center dot H center dot center dot center dot pi and C-Br center dot center dot center dot pi interactions.

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, Na(+)center dot C(6)H(10)NS(2) center dot 2H(2)O, is composed of a sodium cation, a piperidinedithiocarbamate anion which exhibits positional disorder, and two lattice water molecules. The atoms of the piperidine ring are divided over two sites with occupancy factors of 0.554 (6) and 0.446 (6). In the crystal, the sodium cation (coordination number of 6) and the piperidinedithiocarbamate anion are linked, forming an infinite two-dimensional network extending parallel to (001). O-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonds, involving the lattice water molecules, also aid in stabilizing the crystal sructure.

The title compound, NH(4) +center dot C(6)H(10)NS(2) -, is composed of an ammonium cation and a piperidine-1-carbodithioate anion which exhibits positional disorder. The atoms of the ring have a structural disorder and they are divided into two sites, with occupancy factors of 0.584 and 0.426.. In the crystal, the cation and anion are linked by N-H...S hydrogen bonds to form an infinite two-dimensional network.

In the title compound, C(22)H(14)N(2)O(2), the five rings of the molecule are not coplanar. There is a significant twist between the four fused rings, which have a slightly arched conformation, and the pendant aromatic ring, as seen in the dihedral angle of 13.16 (8)degrees between the anthraquinonic ring system and the pendant aromatic ring plane.

Chronic infusion of human amyloid-beta 1-40 (A beta) in the lateral ventricle (LV) of rats is associated with memory impairment and increase of kinin receptors in cortical and hippocampal areas. Deletion of kinin B1 or B2 receptors abolished memory impairment caused by an acute single injection of A beta in the LV. As brain tissue and kinin receptors could unlikely react to acute or chronic administration of a similar quantity of A beta, we evaluated the participation of B1 or B2 receptors in memory impairment after chronic infusion of A beta. Male C57BI/6 J (wt), knock-out B1 (koB1) or B2 (koB2) mice (12 weeks of age) previously trained in a two-way shuttle-box and achieving conditioned avoidance responses (CAR, % of 50 trials) were infused with AB (550 pmol, 0.12 mu L/h, 28 days) or vehicle in the LV using a mini-osmotic pump. They were tested before the surgery (TO), 7 and 35 days after the infusion started (T7; T35). In T0, no difference was observed between CAR of the control (Cwt = 59.7 +/- 6.7%; CkoB1 = 46.7 +/- 4.0%; CkoB2 = 64.4 +/- 5.8%) and A beta (A beta wt = 66.0 +/- 3.0%; A beta koB1 = 66.8 +/- 8.2%; A beta koB2 = 58.7 +/- 5.9%) groups. In T7, A beta koB2 showed a significant decrease in CAR (41.0 +/- 8.6%) compared to the control-koB2 (72.8 +/- 2.2%, P <0.05). In T35, a significant decrease (P <0.05) was observed in A beta wt (40.7 +/- 3.3%) and A beta koB2 (41.2 +/- 10.7%) but not in the A beta koB1 (64.0 +/- 14.0%) compared to their control groups. No changes were observed in the controls at T35. We suggest that in chronic infusion of BA, B1 receptors could playan important role in the neurodegenerative process. Conversely, the premature memory impairment of koB2 suggests that it may be a protective factor. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Intense physical training and dietary energy restriction have been associated with consequences such as nutritional amenorrhea. We investigated the effects of intense physical training, food restriction or the combination of both strategies on estrous cyclicity in female rats, and the relationship between leptin ad these effects. Twenty-seven female Wistar rats were distributed into four groups: SF: sedentary, fed ad libitum; SR: sedentary subjected to 50% food restriction (based on the food intake of their fed counterparts); TF: trained (physical training on a motor treadmill with a gradual increase in speed and time), fed ad libitum; TR; trained with 50% food restriction. We analysed estrous cyclicity, plasma leptin and estradiol as well as chemical composition of the carcass, body weight variation. and weight of ovaries and perirenal adipose tissue. Data demonstrate that physical training alone was not responsible for significant modifications in either carcass chemical composition or reproductive function. Food restriction reduced leptin levels in all animals and interrupted the estrous cyclicity in some animals, but only the combination of food restriction and physical training was capable of interrupting the estrous cyclicity in all animals. Leptin was not directly related to estrous cyclicity. From our findings, it may be concluded that there is an additive or synergistic effect of energy intake restriction and energy expenditure by intense physical training on estrous cyclicity. Leptin appears to be one among others factors related to estrous cycle, but it probably acts indirectly.

The first problem of the Seleucid mathematical cuneiform tablet BM 34 568 calculates the diagonal of a rectangle from its sides without resorting to the Pythagorean rule. For this reason, it has been a source of discussion among specialists ever since its first publication. but so far no consensus in relation to its mathematical meaning has been attained. This paper presents two new interpretations of the scribe`s procedure. based on the assumption that he was able to reduce the problem to a standard Mesopotamian question about reciprocal numbers. These new interpretations are then linked to interpretations of the Old Babylonian tablet Plimpton 322 and to the presence of Pythagorean triples in the contexts of Old Babylonian and Hellenistic mathematics.
