A quantitative correlation between the glass forming ability and the electronic parameters of metallic alloys is presented. It is found that the critical cooling rate for glass formation (R(c)) correlates well with the average work function difference (Delta phi) and the average electron density difference (Delta n(ws)(1/3)) among the constituent elements of the investigated alloys. A correlation coefficient (R(2)) of 0.77 was found for 68 alloys in 30 metallic systems, which is better than the previous proposed correlation between the glass forming ability and the average Pauling electronegativity difference.

This work evaluates the glass formation of selected alloys based on the Ti-Zr-Fe-Co system, assuming the synergy of two distinct criteria: minimum topological instability and average electronegativity plots. Combining the minimum topological instability and the average electronegativity values result in a plot in which the most probable good glass former compositions are identified Ti-Zr rich alloys with Fe and Co additions were produced, compared against the final plot, and the best glass forming alloy composition was found to be very close the theoretically predicted ones on the Ti-Zr rich side, for both Ti-Zr-Fe and Ti-Zr-Co systems. AISI D2 is the most commonly used cold-work tool steel of its grade. It offers high hardenability, low distortion after quenching, high resistance to softening and good wear resistance. The use of appropriate hard coatings on this steel can further improve its wear resistance. Boronizing is a surface treatment of Boron diffusion into the substrate. In this work boride layers were formed on AISI D2 steel using borax baths containing iron-titanium and aluminium, at 800 degrees C and 1000 degrees C during 4 h. The borided treated steel was characterized by optical microscopy, Vickers microhardness, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and glow discharge optical spectroscopy (GDOS) to verify the effect of the bath compositions and treatment temperatures in the layer formation. Depending on the bath composition, Fe(2)B or FeB was the predominant phase in the boride layers. The layers exhibited ""saw-tooth"" morphology at the substrate interface; layer thicknesses varied from 60 to 120 mu m, and hardness in the range of 1596-1744 HV were obtained. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, we report the remarkable agreement of the glass forming ability of binary alloys with a new criterion that combines the topological instability parameter (lambda) and the average electronegativity difference among the elements of an alloy, assuming both exert a synergetic effect. The best glass forming compositions for Zr-Cu and Ti-Ni systems are well predicted by this new approach. Although the new criterion needs further refinement, it is concluded that the proposed approach is a promising and simple tool to guide and reduce the tedious and labour intensive work to find good glass former compositions in metallic systems. A thermodynamic approach to predict bulk glass-forming compositions in binary metallic systems was recently proposed. In this approach. the parameter gamma* = Delta H-amor/(Delta H-inter - Delta H-amor) indicates the glass-forming ability (GFA) from the standpoint of the driving force to form different competing phases, and Delta H-amor and Delta H-inter are the enthalpies for-lass and intermetallic formation, respectively. Good glass-forming compositions should have a large negative enthalpy for glass formation and a very small difference for intermetallic formation, thus making the glassy phase easily reachable even under low cooling rates. The gamma* parameter showed a good correlation with GFA experimental data in the Ni-Nb binary system. In this work, a simple extension of the gamma* parameter is applied in the ternary Al-Ni-Y system. The calculated gamma* isocontours in the ternary diagram are compared with experimental results of glass formation in that system. Despite sonic misfitting, the best glass formers are found quite close to the highest gamma* values, leading to the conclusion that this thermodynamic approach can lie extended to ternary systems, serving as a useful tool for the development of new glass-forming compositions. Finally the thermodynamic approach is compared with the topological instability criteria used to predict the thermal behavior of glassy Al alloys. (C) 2007 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

This work presents a novel dressing technique that allows the inscription of pre-configurable patterns, or textures, on the grinding wheel surface. An electro-mechanical exciter connected to the dressing tool receives synchronized signal from a control software engraving patterns on the grinding wheel. The dressing and grinding operations were evaluated using the AE mapping technique. The presented applications show the use of textured grinding wheels for better grinding process performance in conventional applications and also for the production of patterned surfaces in order to change its functional performance. The results and analysis allow a better understanding of the grinding mechanism with patterned wheels. With the application of the proposed method it was possible to inscribe different patterns on workpieces and also to increase the grinding performance in conventional applications. (C) 2010 CIRP.

The aim of this work is to study the wheel/workpiece dynamic interactions in high-speed grinding using vitrified CBN wheel and DTG (difficult to grind) work materials. This problem is typical in the grinding of engine valve heads. The influence of tangential force per abrasive grain was investigated as an important control variable for the determination of G ratio. Experiments were carried out to observe the influence of vibrations in the wheel wear. The measurements of acoustic emission (AE) and vibration signals helped in identifying the correlation between the dynamic interactions (produced by forced random excitation) and the wheel wear. The wheel regenerative chatter phenomenon was observed by using the wheel mapping technique. (c) 2008 CIRP.

The performance assessment as to water consumption in WC cisterns has contributed to the development of flushing system technologies, which allow smaller flushing volumes. The purpose of this work is to assess the performance of the the low water consumption requirement of WC cisterns with dual flushing system (6/3L), when compared to 6L flushing volume WC cisterns in multifamily buildings. The research methodology consisted of a case study in a multifamily residential building with submetering system, by monitoring the total water consumption and the two flushing systems using water meters installed in WC cisterns. By means of a mathematical model, a comparison of the design flowrate in the main branch was carried out considering the two types of WC cisterns. The results indicated that the water consumption in the 6L WC cistern was 20% in relation to the total domestic consumption, whereas the water consumption observed in the dual-flush WC cistern (6/3L) was 16%. The dual flushing system (6/3L) presented about 18% consumption reduction impact as compared to the 6 L system. The design flowrate values in the main branch, obtained by the mathematical model, were 0.35 L/s for systems with 6 L WC cistern and 0.34 L/s with dual-flush WC cistern (6/3 L), that is, a reduction of similar to 3%. Practical application: The knowledge of the performance in field of dual-flush WC cistern contributes to industry to improve this system and to users to aid their choice of technologies aimed at water conservation, and so assisting to the development of sustainable buildings.

It is well established, the importance of the measurement of soil suction for the assessment of mechanical and hydraulic behavior of unsaturated soils. Among the methods to obtain the soil suction, the tensiometer is one of the most convenient and reliable. However conventional tensiometer has a limitation related to the maximum suction it is capable of measure. This limitation was overcome by Ridley and Burland (1993), with the development of a high capacity tensiometer, which is capable of measure suction well above 100 kPa. The equipment has a quick response time, allowing the determination of suction in minutes. This paper presents a study about the factors that affect the equilibrium time for high capacity tensiometers in the laboratory. Soil specimens were prepared at three different conditions, creating different soil structures. In addition to that an investigation about the characteristic of the interface that is required between the soil sample and the porous ceramic of the tensiometer was carried out; showing the role of the paste on the technique. The results also suggested that it is possible to infer the hydraulic conductivity function using the equilibrium curve obtained during the measurement of the soil suction using the high capacity tensiometer.

The weathering behavior of polystyrene and polystyrene-montmorillonite composites containing 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 wt% of montmorillonite (MMT) was investigated. Samples were exposed to UV radiation for periods of up to similar to 12 weeks and their molecular weight, chemical changes, and mechanical properties were monitored as a function of time. The addition of MMT was shown to improve the photostability of all composites investigated, probably because of a screen effect against UV radiation and barrier effect against diffusion of oxygen promoted by the silicate layers of MMT. Scanning electron microscopy of fracture surfaces of degraded samples showed that there is a degraded layer near the surface that provided a recovery of tensile strength of the samples.

The aim of this work is to study MnO reduction by solid carbon. The influence of size of carbon particles, slag basicity, and bath temperature on MnO reduction was investigated. Fine Manganese ore particles were used as a source of MnO. Three sizes of carbon particles were used; 0.230 mm, 0.162 mm and 0.057 mm, binary basicity of 1 and 1.5 and temperatures of 1550, 1550 and 1600 degrees C. Curves were drawn for Mn content in the bath as a function of time and temperature for the several studied parameters. The MnO reduction rates were determined using these data. In this work, a wide analysis of local search multiuser detection (LS-MUD) for direct sequence/code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems under multipath channels is carried out considering the performance-complexity trade-off. It is verified the robustness of the LS-MUD to variations in loading, E(b)/N(0), near-far effect, number of fingers of the Rake receiver and errors in the channel coefficients estimates. A compared analysis of the bit error rate (BER) and complexity trade-off is accomplished among LS, genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Based on the deterministic behavior of the LS algorithm, it is also proposed simplifications over the cost function calculation, obtaining more efficient algorithms (simplified and combined LS-MUD versions) and creating new perspectives for the MUD implementation. The computational complexity is expressed in terms of the number of operations in order to converge. Our conclusion pointed out that the simplified LS (s-LS) method is always more efficient, independent of the system conditions, achieving a better performance with a lower complexity than the others heuristics detectors. Associated to this, the deterministic strategy and absence of input parameters made the s-LS algorithm the most appropriate for the MUD problem. (C) 2008 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

A new approach to electrochromics, based on the reversible coating-dissolution of an oxide from an inorganic electrochromic electrolyte consisting of a silver-amine complex in a polymer electrolyte (PEO), has proven successful. The reversible electrodeposition of silver onto indium-tin oxide coated glass (ITO) was investigated and the influence of HClO(4) and KI was evaluated. Several characteristics of the electrolyte Ag-PEO make it suitable for use in electrochromic reversible silver electrodeposition devices, such as visible absorption spectrum with an absorbance variation of 60%, an electrochromic efficiency of 5.2 cm(2) C(-1) and an ionic conductivity 4.4 x 10(-4) S cm(-1). The addition of perchloric acid improved the transparency of Ag-PEO, and potassium iodide (KI) was fundamental in setting up the process of reversible silver electrodeposition in the PEO polymeric matrix. A description of the electrochemical processes implied is presented. A number of approaches focusing on the improvement of system performance are tested. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Owing to its toxicity, aluminum (Al), which is one of the most abundant metals, inhibits the productivity of many cultures and affects the microbial metabolism. The aim of this work was to investigate the capacity of sugar cane vinasse to mitigate the adverse effects of Al on cell growth, viability, and budding, as the likely result of possible chelating action. For this purpose, Fleischmann`s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was used in growth tests performed in 125-mL Erlenmeyer flasks containing 30 mL of YED medium (5.0 g/L yeast extract plus 20 g/L glucose) supplemented with the selected amounts of either vinasse or Al in the form of AlCl(3) center dot A H(2)O. Without vinasse, the addition of increasing levels of Al up to 54 mg/L reduced the specific growth rate by 18%, whereas no significant reduction was observed in its presence. The toxic effect of Al on S. cerevisiae growth and the mitigating effect of sugar cane vinasse were quantified by the exponential model of Ciftci et al. (Biotechnol Bioeng 25:2007-2023, 1983). The cell viability decreased from 97.7% at the start to 84.0% at the end of runs without vinasse and to 92.3% with vinasse. On the other hand, the cell budding increased from 7.62% at the start to 8.84% at the end of runs without vinasse and to 17.8% with vinasse. These results demonstrate the ability of this raw material to stimulate cell growth and mitigate the toxic effect of Al.

Core collections are of strategic importance as they allow the use of a small part of a germplasm collection that is representative of the total collection. The objective of this study was to develop a soybean core collection of the USDA Soybean Germplasm Collection by comparing the results of random, proportional, logarithmic, multivariate proportional and multivariate logarithmic sampling strategies. All but the random sampling strategy used stratification of the entire collection based on passport data and maturity group classification. The multivariate proportional and multivariate logarithmic strategies made further use of qualitative and quantitative trait data to select diverse accessions within each stratum. The 18 quantitative trait data distribution parameters were calculated for each core and for the entire collection for pairwise comparison to validate the sampling strategies. All strategies were adequate for assembling a core collection. The random core collection best represented the entire collection in statistical terms. Proportional and logarithmic strategies did not maximize statistical representation but were better in selecting maximum variability. Multivariate proportional and multivariate logarithmic strategies produced the best core collections as measured by maximum variability conservation. The soybean core collection was established using the multivariate proportional selection strategy. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
