Hydrogen interaction with oxide films grown on iron electrodes at open circuit potential (E-oc) and in the passive region (+0.30 V-ECS) was studied by chronopotentiometry, chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. The results were obtained in deaerated 0.3 mol L-1 H3BO3 + 0.075 mol L-1 Na2B4O7 (BB, pH 8.4) solution before, during and after hydrogen permeation. The iron oxide film modification was also investigated by means of in situ X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) before and during hydrogen permeation. The main conclusion was that the passive film is reduced during the hydrogen diffusion. The hydrogen permeation stabilizes the iron surface at a potential close to the thermodynamic water stability line where hydrogen evolution can occur. The stationary condition required for the determination of the permeation parameters cannot be easily attained on iron surface during hydrogen permeation. Moreover, additional attention must be paid when obtaining the transport parameters using the classical permeation cell. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Charge recombination at the conductor substrate/electrolyte interface has been prevented by using efficient blocking layers of TiO(2) compact films in dye-sensitized solar cell photoanodes. Compact blocking layers have been deposited before the mesoporous TiO(2) film by the layer-by-layer technique using titania nanoparticles as cations and sodium sulfonated polystyrene, PSS, as a polyanion. The TiO(2)/PSS blocking layer in a DSC prevents the physical contact of FTO and the electrolyte and leads to a 28% increase in the cell`s overall conversion efficiency, from 5.7% to 7.3%. In this work, we report on the magnetic properties of nickel nanoparticles (NP) in a SiO(2)-C thin film matrix, prepared by a polymeric precursor method, with Ni content x in the 0-10 wt% range. Microstructural analyses of the films showed that the Ni NP are homogenously distributed in the SiO(2)-C matrix and have spherical shape with average diameter of similar to 10 nm. The magnetic properties reveal features of superparamagnetism with blocking temperatures T (B) similar to 10 K. The average diameter of the Ni NP, estimated from magnetization measurements, was found to be similar to 4 nm for the x = 3 wt% Ni sample, in excellent agreement with X-ray diffraction data. M versus H hysteresis loops indicated that the Ni NP are free from a surrounding oxide layer. We have also observed that coercivity (H (C)) develops appreciably below T (B), and follows the H (C) ae [1 - (T/T (B))(0.5)] relationship, a feature expected for randomly oriented and non-interacting nanoparticles. The extrapolation of H (C) to 0 K indicates that coercivity decreases with increasing x, suggesting that dipolar interactions may be relevant in films with x > 3 wt% Ni.

The cleaning procedure consists of two-step-flashing: (i) cycles of low power flashes T similar to 1200 K) at an oxygen partial pressure of P(o2) = 6 x 10(-8) mbar, to remove the carbon from the surface, and (ii) a single high power flash (T similar to 2200 K), to remove the oxide layer. The removal of carbon from the surface through the chemical reaction with oxygen during low power flash cycles is monitored by thermal desorption spectroscopy. The exposure to O(2) leads to the oxidation of the W surface. Using a high power flash, the volatile W-oxides and the atomic oxygen are desorbed, leaving a clean crystal surface at the end of procedure. The method may also be used for cleaning other refractory metals like Mo, Re and It. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The biocompatibility of commercially pure (cp) titanium stems from its chemical stability within an organism, due to a fine film of impermeable titanium oxide covering the metal surface, which guarantees its resistance to corrosion. Despite its biocompatible characteristic, this material does not promote the formation of a hydroxyapatite layer, therefore, many research groups have sought to alter the material`s surface, introducing modifications that might influence corrosion resistance. The electrochemical behavior of cp Ti, with hydroxyapatite coating and without hydroxyapatite coating, commonly used in implant materials, was investigated using an artificial saliva solution at 25 degrees C and pH=7.4. In the conditions of the study it was observed that the hydroxyapatite layer influences the properties of corrosion resistance. This study of the behavior of cp Ti with and without hydroxyapatite coating, in naturally aerated artificial saliva solution at 25 degrees C, was based on open circuit potential measurements and potentiodynamic polarization curves. At approximately 1x10(-6) A/cm(2) the potential for cp Ti with and without hydroxyapatite coating begins to increase at a faster rate, but at -74mV (SCE) for coated cp Ti and at 180mV (SCE) for uncoated cp Ti the increase in potential begins to slow. This behavior, characterized by a partial stabilization of current density, indicates that in those potential ranges a protective passive film is formed.

The disclosure of magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) as stable dispersions of surface modified gamma-Fe(2)O(3) or CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles (NPs) in the 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIBF(4)) ionic liquid is reported. The magnetic NPs were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The surface modified NPs have proved to form stable dispersions in BMIBF(4) in the absence of water and behave like a magnetic ionic liquid. The MILs have been characterized by Raman spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, and DSC. The stability of the magnetic NPs in BMIBF(4) is consistently explained by assuming the formation of a semiorganized protective layer composed of supramolecular aggregates in the form of [(BMI)(2)(BF(4))(3)](-). A superparamagnetic behavior and saturation magnetization of ca. 18 emu/g for a sample containing 30% w/w maghemite NPs/BMIBF(4) have been inferred from static and dynamic magnetic measurements. DSC results have shown that the MIL composed of 30% w/w CoFe(2)O(4) NPs/BMIBF(4) remains a liquid phase down to -84 degrees C.

Four aluminas were used as Supports for impregnation with a zirconium oxide with the aim to achieve a coating, without phase separation, between Support and modifier. The Supports were impregnated with different concentrations Of zirconium aqueous resin, obtained through the polymeric precursor method. After impregnation the samples were calcined and then characterized by XRD, which led to identification of crystalline zirconia in different concentrations from each support used. Using a simple geometric model the maximum amount Of Surface modifier Oxide required for the complete coating of a support with a layer of unit cells was estimated. According to this estimate, only the support should be identified below the limit proposed and crystalline zirconium oxide Should be identified above this limit when a complete coating is reached. The results obtained From XRD agree with the estimated values and to confirm the coating, the samples were also characterized by EDS/STEM, HRTEM, XPS, and XAS. The results showed that the zirconium oxide oil the Surface of alumina Support reached the coating in the limit of 15 Zr nm(-2), without the formation of the ZrO(2) phase. (c) 2009 Elsevier Inc. Electroactive nanostructured membranes have been produced by the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique, and used to make electrochemical enzyme biosensors for glucose by modification with cobalt hexacyanoferrate redox mediator and immobilisation of glucose oxidase enzyme. Indium tin oxide (ITO) glass electrodes were modified with up to three bilayers of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers containing gold nanoparticles and poly(vinylsulfonate) (PVS). The gold nanoparticles were covered with cobalt hexacyanoferrate that functioned as a redox mediator, allowing the modified electrode to be used to detect H(2)O(2), the product of the oxidase enzymatic reaction, at 0.0 V vs. SCE. Enzyme was then immobilised by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde. Several parameters for optimisation of the glucose biosensor were investigated, including the number of deposited bilayers, the enzyme immobilisation protocol and the concentrations of immobilised enzyme and of the protein that was crosslinked with PAMAM. The latter was used to provide glucose oxidase with a friendly environment, in order to preserve its bioactivity. The optimised biosensor, with three bilayers, has high sensitivity and operational stability, with a detection limit of 6.1 mu M and an apparent Michaelis-Menten constant of 0.20 mM. It showed good selectivity against interferents and is suitable for glucose measurements in natural samples. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The use of melanin in bioinspired applications is mostly limited by its poor stability in solid films. This problem has been addressed here by incorporating melanin into dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG) liposomes, which were then immobilized onto a solid substrate as an LbL film. Results from steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence indicated an increased stability for melanin incorporated into DPPG liposomes. If not protected by liposomes, melanin looses completely its fluorescence properties in LbL films. The thickness of the liposome-melanin layer obtained from neutron reflectivity data was 4.1 +/- 0.2 nm, consistent with the value estimated for the phospholipid bilayer of the liposomes, an evidence of the collapse of most liposomes. On the other hand, the final roughness indicated that some of the liposomes had their structure preserved. In summary, liposomes were proven excellent for encapsulation, thus providing a suitable environment, closer to the physiological conditions without using organic solvents or high pHs. Layer-by-layer (LBL) films of nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) alternated with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) have been prepared, whose surface charge has been evaluated using surface potential measurements. From adsorption kinetics results, we obtained the immersion time of similar to 40 s, which was used to assemble layers of NiTsPc. The effect of gold (Au) and aluminum (Al) electrodes on the charge behavior was examined. We found that the surface potential (i.e. surface charge) was inverted each time a layer of PAH was alternated with another of NiTsPc molecules for the two types of electrodes, which was attributed to charge overcompensation between positive charges of PAH molecules, and negative charges from NiTsPc molecules. Efficient compact TiO(2) films using different polyeleetrolytes are prepared by the layer-by-layer technique (LbL) and applied as an effective contact and blocking film in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The polyanion thermal stability plays a major role on the compact layers, which decreases back electron transfer processes and current losses at the FTO/TiO(2) interface. FESEM images show that polyelectrolytes such is sodium sullonated polystyrene (PSS) and sulfonated lignin (SE), in comparison to poly(acrylic acid) (FAA), ensure an adequate morphology for the LbL TiO(2) layer deposited before the mesoporous film, even triter the sintering step at 450 degrees C. The so treated photoanode in DSCs leads to a 30% improvement On the overall conversion efficiency. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is employed to ascertain the role of die compact films with such polyelectrolytes. The significant increase in V(oc) of the solar cells with adequate polyelectrolytes in the LbL TiO(2) films shows their pivotal role in decreasing the electron recombination at the FTO surface and enhancing the electrical contact of FTO with the mesoporous TiO(2) layer.

The present paper describes the immobilization of nanoparticles onto conducting substrates by using both electrostatic layer-by-layer and electrophoretic deposition (EPD) methods. These two techniques were compared in high-performance electrochromic electrodes based on mixed nickel hydroxide nanoparticles. In addition to easy handling, EPD seems to be the most suitable method for the immobilization of nanoparticles, leading to higher electrochromic efficiencies, lower response times and higher stability upon coloration and bleaching cycling. A sensor for H2O2 amperometric detection based on a Prussian blue (PB) analogue was developed. The electrocatalytic process allows the determination of hydrogen peroxide at 0.0 V with a limit of detection of 1.3 mu mol L-1 in a flow injection analysis (FIA) configuration. Studies on the optimization of the FIA parameters were performed and under optimal FIA operational conditions the linear response of the method was extended up to 500 mu mol L-1 hydrogen peroxide with good stability. The possibility of using the developed sensor in medium containing sodium ions and the increased operational stability constitute advantages in comparison with PB-based amperometric sensors. The usefulness of the methodology was demonstrated by addition-recovery experiments with rainwater samples and values were in the 98.8 to 103% range.

Thin films of MnO(2) nanoparticles were grown using the layer-by-layer method with poly (diallyldimetylammonium) as the intercalated layer. The film growth was followed by UV-vis, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), and atomic force microscopy. Linear growth due to electrostatic immobilization of layers was observed up to 30 bilayers, but electrical connectivity was maintained only for 12 MnO(2)/PPDA bilayers. The electrochemical characterization of this film in 1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-imidazolium (BMMI) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) (BMMITFSI) with and without addition of a lithium salt indicated a higher electrochemical response of the nanostructured electrode in the lithium-containing electrolyte. On the basis of EQCM experiments, it was possible to confirm that the charge compensation process is achieved mainly by the TFSI anion at short times (<2 s) and by BMMI and lithium cations at longer times. The fact that large ions like TFSI and BMMI participate in the electroneutrality is attributed to the redox reaction that occurs at the superficial sites and to the high concentration of these species compared to that of lithium cations.

Structural and thermodynamic stabilities of monomers and dimers of trialkylphosphine oxides (TRPO) were Studied using quantum chemistry calculations. Density functional theory calculations were carried Out and the structures Of four TRPO have been determined: TMPO (methyl; R = CH(3)), TEPO (ethyl; R = CH(3)CH(2)), TBPO (n-butyl; R = CH(3)(CH(2))(3)), and TOPO (n-octyl; R = CH(3)(CH(2))(7)). TRPO homodimers were investigated considering two isomeric possibilities for each dimer. Relative binding energies and the enthalpic and entropic contributions to the Gibbs free energy were Calculated for all dimers. The formation of dimers from the individual monomeric TRPO species as a function of temperature was also analyzed. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem 109: 250-258, 2009
