In this work, KHSO(4):Mn crystals doped with Mn and K(2)SO(4) were synthesized using an aqueous solution method. The samples were exposed to ionizing radiation in order to observe the effects on their physical properties. Raman spectroscopy was used to identify the structure of the crystals by detecting the vibrational frequencies of the crystalline lattice. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to study the creation of paramagnetic centers arising from exposure to ionizing radiation. This new synthesis method produces high quality K(2)SO(4) and KHSO(4):Mn crystals and allows control of structural, morphological, optical and magnetic properties. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The photoactivation of a photosensitizer is the initial step in photodynamic therapy (PDT) where photochemical reactions result in the production of reactive oxygen species and eventually cell death. In addition to oxidizing biomolecules, some of these photochemical reactions lead to photosensitizer degradation at a rate dependent on the oxygen concentration among other factors. We investigated photodegradation of Photogem A (R) (28 mu M), a hematoporphyrin derivative, at different oxygen concentrations (9.4 to 625.0 mu M) in aqueous solution. The degradation was monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy. The degradation rate (M/s) increases as the oxygen concentration increases when the molar ratio of oxygen to PhotogemA (R) is greater than 1. At lower oxygen concentrations (< 25 mu M) an inversion of this behavior was observed. The data do not fit a simple kinetic model of first-order dependence on oxygen concentration. This inversion of the degradation rate at low oxygen concentration has not previously been demonstrated and highlights the relationship between photosensitizer and oxygen concentrations in determining the photobleaching mechanism(s). The findings demonstrate that current models for photobleaching are insufficient to explain completely the effects at low oxygen concentration.

Carra sawdust pretrated with formaldehyde was used to adsorb RR239 (reactive azo dye) at varying pH and zerovalent iron (ZVI) dosage. Modeling of kinetic results shows that sorption process is best described by the pseudo-second-order model. Batch experiments suggest that the decolorization efficiency was strongly enhanced with the presence of ZVI and low solution pH. The kinetics of dye sorption by mixed sorbent (5 g of sawdust and 180 mg of ZVI) at pH 2.0 was rapid, reaching more than 90% of the total discoloration in three minutes.

The sequential Monte Carlo/CASPT2 approach was employed to investigate deactivation and emission processes from the lowest-lying pi pi * and n pi * excited states of 9H-adenine in aqueous solution. It is found that conical intersections connecting the pi pi* and n pi* states with the ground state are also present in solution, whereas the barriers for the deactivation paths are significantly smaller on solvated conditions. The large destabilization of the n pi* state found in solution possibly prevents its involvement in the deactivation photophysics and explains the change from a bi- to a mono-exponential decay for the molecule in the gas phase and solution, respectively. The ozonolysis of 2,4-xylidine (2,4-dimethyl-aniline) in acidic aqueous solution was investigated by determining the major reaction products and their evolution as a function of the reaction time and their dependence on the pH of the reaction system. 2,4-Dimethyl-nitrobenzene and 2,4-dimethyl-phenol were found to be primary reaction products; their formation might be explained by electron transfer and substitution reactions. 2,4-Dimethyl-phenol was further oxidized yielding 2,4-dimethyl- and/or 4,6-dimethyl-resorcinol by electrophilic addition of HO(center dot) radicals. The best fitting phenomenological kinetic model and the good convergence of calculated and experimentally determined rate constants imply two additional competitive pathways of substrate oxidation: (i) electrophilic addition of HO(center dot) radicals and fast subsequent substitution would also yield the resorcinol derivatives. (ii) Substrate and isolated products are thought to be oxidized by hydrogen abstraction at the benzylic sites, but the corresponding products (alcohols, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids) could not be identified. Fe(II) was added to probe for the presence of H(2)O(2), but had no or only a minor effect on the kinetics of the ozonolysis. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The minimum energy path along the lowest-lying pi pi* excited state of 2-aminopurine was calculated to elucidate the mechanisms of radiationless decay and emission in water. The sequential Monte Carlo quantum mechanics approach with a multiconfigurational and perturbative description of the wave function was employed to compute the minimum, transition state, and conical intersection. It was found that the barrier in the potential energy surface to access the conical intersection funnel increases in aqueous environment, making the system prone to enlarge the emission yield. These results rationalize the observed enhancement of emission in 2-aminopurine upon increasing of the solvent polarity. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A spectroscopic study was performed showing that the [Fe(III)(L(2-))(2)](1-) (L(2-) = dopacatecholate) complex reacts with Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) in an aqueous solution containing S(2)O(3)(2-) resulting in the soluble [M(L(1-))(3)](1-) (L(1-) = dopasemiquinone; M = Ni(II), Co(II) or Zn(II) complex species. The Raman and IR spectra of the [CTA][M(L(1-))(3)] complexes, CTA hexadecyltrimethylammonium cation, in the solid state were obtained. The kinetic constants for the metal substitution reactions were determined at four different temperatures, providing values for Delta W(not equal) Delta S(not equal) and Delta G(not equal). The reactions were slow (k = 10(-1)1 M s(-1)) and endothermic. The system investigated can be considered as a simplified model to explain some aspects of siderophore chemistry. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. Polysaccharide natural seed coat from the tree Magonia pubescens, in the form of hydrogel was used to remove metals in aqueous solution. Swelling tests indicate that seed coat presents hydrogel behavior, with maximum water absorption of 292 g water/g. Adsorption experiments performed using Na(+), Mg(2+), K(+), Ca(2+), Cr(3+), Fe(3+) and Zn(2+) demonstrated that the polysaccharide structure has a high capacity to extract these ions from the aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy revealed significant morphological changes of the material before and after water contact. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicate a signal shift of the water evaporation temperature in the material with adsorbed zinc. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis combined with theoretical studies by the density functional theory and on Hartree-Fock (HF) level evidence that the metallic ions were adsorbed through coordination with hydroxyl groups of polysaccharide. In the case of Zn(2+) the lowest HF energy was observed for the tetracoordination mode, where Zn(2+) is coordinated by two hydroxyl groups and two water molecules.

In the present study, films based on linter cellulose and chitosan were prepared using an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH)/thiourea as the solvent system. The dissolution process of cellulose and chitosan in NaOH/thiourea aqueous solution was followed by the partial chain depolymerization of both biopolymers, which facilitates their solubilization. Biobased films with different chitosan/cellulose ratios were then elaborated by a casting method and subsequent solvent evaporation. They were characterized by X-ray analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermal analysis, and tests related to tensile strength and biodegradation properties. The SEM images of the biofilms with 50/50 and 60/40 ratio of chitosan/cellulose showed surfaces more wrinkled than the others. The AFM images indicated that higher the content of chitosan in the biobased composite film, higher is the average roughness value. It was inferred through thermal analysis that the thermal stability was affected by the presence of chitosan in the films; the initial temperature of decomposition was shifted to lower levels in the presence of chitosan. Results from the tests for tensile strength indicated that the blending of cellulose and chitosan improved the mechanical properties of the films and that an increase in chitosan content led to production of films with higher tensile strength and percentage of elongation. The degradation study in a simulated soil showed that the higher the crystallinity, the lower is the biodegradation rate.

Environmentally friendly biocomposites were successfully prepared by dissolving chitosan and cellulose in a NaOH/thiourea solvent with subsequent heating and film casting. Under the considered conditions, NaOH/thiourea led to chain depolymerization of both biopolymers without a dramatic loss of film forming capacities. Compatibility of both biopolymers in the biocomposite was firstly assessed through scanning electron microscopy, revealing an intermediate organization between cellulose fiber network and smoothness of pure chitosan. DSC analyses led to exothermic peaks close to 285 and 315 degrees C for the biocomposite, compared to the exothermic peaks of chitosan (275 degrees C) and cellulose (265 and 305 degrees C), suggesting interactions between chitosan and cellulose. Contact angle analyses pointed out the deformation that can occur at the surface due to the high affinity of the;e materials with water. T(2) NMR relaxometry behavior of biocomposites appeared to be dominated by chitosan. Other properties of films, as crystallinity, water sorption isotherms, among others, are also discussed. The electrochemical methods cyclic and square-wave voltammetry were applied to develop an electroanalytical procedure for the determination of N-nitrosamines (N-nitrosopyrrolidine, N-nitrosopiperidine and N-nitrosodiethylamine) in aqueous solutions. Cyclic voltammetry was used to evaluate the electrochemical behaviors of N-nitrosamines on boron-doped diamond electrodes. It was observed an irreversible electrooxidation peak located in approximately 1.8 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) for both N-nitrosamines. The optimal electrochemical response was obtained using the following square-wave voltammetry parameters: f = 250 Hz, E(sw) = 50 mV and E(s) = 2 mV using a Britton-Robinson buffer solution as electrolyte (pH 2). The detection and quantification limits determined for total N-nitrosamines were 6.0 x 10(-8) and 2.0 x 10(-7) mol L(-1), respectively.

The nonadiabatic photochemistry of 6-azauracil has been studied by means of the CASPT2//CASSCF protocol and double-zeta plus polarization ANO basis sets. Minimum energy states, transition states, minimum energy paths, and surface intersections have been computed in order to obtain an accurate description of several potential energy hypersurfaces. It is concluded that, after absorption of ultraviolet radiation (248 nm), two main relaxation mechanisms may occur, via which the lowest (3)(pi pi*) state can be populated. The first one takes place via a conical intersection involving the bright (1)(pi pi*) and the lowest (1)(n pi*) states, ((1)pi pi*/(1)n pi*)(CI), from which a low energy singlet-triplet crossing, ((1)n pi*/(3)pi pi*)(STC), connecting the (1)(n pi*) state to the lowest (3)(pi pi*) triplet state is accessible. The second mechanism arises via a singlet-triplet crossing, ((1)pi pi*/(3)n pi*)(STC), leading to a conical intersection in the triplet manifold, ((3)n pi*/(3)pi pi*)(CI), evolving to the lowest (3)(pi pi*) state. Further radiationless decay to the ground state is possible through a (gs/(3)pi pi*)(STC).

The nonadiabatic photochemistry of the guanine molecule (2-amino-6-oxopurine) and some of its tautomers has been studied by means of the high-level theoretical ab initio quantum chemistry methods CASSCF and CASPT2. Accurate computations, based by the first time on minimum energy reaction paths, states minima, transition states, reaction barriers, and conical intersections on the potential energy hypersurfaces of the molecules lead to interpret the photochemistry of guanine and derivatives within a three-state model. As in the other purine DNA nucleobase, adenine, the ultrafast subpicosecond fluorescence decay measured in guanine is attributed to the barrierless character of the path leading from the initially populated (1)(pi pi* L-a) spectroscopic state of the molecule toward the low-lying methanamine-like conical intersection (gs/pi pi* L-a)(CI). On the contrary, other tautomers are shown to have a reaction energy barrier along the main relaxation profile. A second, slower decay is attributed to a path involving switches toward two other states, (1)(pi pi* L-b) and, in particular, (1)(n(o)pi*), ultimately leading to conical intersections with the ground state. A common framework for the ultrafast relaxation of the natural nucleobases is obtained in which the predominant role of a pi pi*-type state is confirmed.

Pterins are members of a family of heterocyclic compounds present in a wide variety of biological systems and may exist in two forms, corresponding to an acid and a basic tautomer. In this work, the proton transfer reaction between these tautomeric forms was investigated in the gas phase and in aqueous solution. In gas phase, the intramolecular mechanism was carried out for die isolated pterin by quantum mechanical second-order Moller-Plesset Perturbation theory (MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ) calculations and it indicates that the acid form is more stable than the basic form by -1.4 kcal/mol with a barrier of 34.2 kcal/mol with respect to the basic form. In aqueous solution, the role of the water molecules in the proton transfer reaction was analyzed in two separated parts, the direct participation of one water molecule in the reaction path, called water-assisted mechanism, and the complementary participation of the aqueous solvation. The water-assisted mechanism was carried out for one pterin-water cluster by quantum mechanical calculations and it indicates that the acid form is still more stable by -3.3 kcal/mol with a drastic reduction of 70% of the barrier, The bulk solution effect on the intramolecular and water-assisted mechanisms was included by free energy perturbation implemented on Monte Carlo simulations. The bulk water effect is found to be substantial and decisive when the reaction path involves the water-assisted mechanism. In this case, the free energy barrier is only 6.7 kcal/mol and the calculated relative Gibbs free energy for the two tautomers is -11.2 kcal/mol. This value is used to calculate the pK(a) value of 8.2 +/- 0.6 that is in excellent agreement with the experimental result of 7.9.

The proline-rich N-terminal domain of gamma-zein has been reported in relevant process, which include its ability to cross the cell membranes. Evidences indicate that synthetic hexapeptide (PPPVHL), naturally found in N-terminal portion of gamma-zein, can adopt the polyproline II (PPII) conformation in aqueous solution. The secondary structure of gamma-zein in maize protein bodies had been analyzed by solid state Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. However, it was not possible to measure PPII content in physiological environment since the beta-sheet and PPII signals overlap in both solid state techniques. Here, the secondary structure of gamma-zein has been analyzed by circular dichroism in SDS aqueous solution with and without ditiothreitol (DTT), and in 60% of 2-propanol and water with DTT The results show that gamma-zein has high helical content in all solutions. The PPII conformation was present at about 7% only in water/DTT solution. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
