Report produced as part of the Green Logistics project (EPSRC and Department for Transport funded). This report is based on a review of UK studies in which data has been collected to obtain an understanding of road-based urban freight transport activities and patterns of operation. Urban freight remains relatively under researched by comparison with passenger transport both in the UK and worldwide. However, in the UK there have been a number of studies that have attempted to investigate road-based freight operations since the 1960s. But no attempt has been made to draw together the results of these various studies and compare them. This is what is presented in this report. The report has studied the results of 30 UK urban freight studies carried out in the last decade in order to attempt to provide insight into urban freight activities in our towns and cities. It presents this current knowledge about urban freight transport activities in the UK from these studies, and compares the similarities and differences between study findings.

The role of bacterial communication, also known as quorum sensing is an important mechanism in biofilm formation which is fundamental to the development of anti-biofilm strategies. In this current study, the synergy between a quorum sensing inhibitor (cinnamaldehyde) and two antibiotics (ceftazidime and levofloxacin) was evaluated in an attempt to develop a strategy for biofilm disruption using the high-throughput minimum biofilm eliminating concentration (MBEC) assay. Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis biofilms of initial broth suspensions of 108 colony forming units (CFU) per mL, cultivated on the pegs of the MBEC device were challenged with 5120 µg/ml of ceftazidime and levofloxacin in a double dilution assay in the presence of 500 µM cinnamaldehyde. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) in the presence of cinnamaldehyde for ceftazidime and levofloxacin were 0.125% (640 µg/mL) and 0.0625% (320 µg/mL) respectively with no significant bacterial growth on LB agar. The MBECs for ceftazidime and levofloxacin were above 5120 and 2560 µg/mL respectively which yielded over 70% reduction in both Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis biofilms. The above results indicate the possibility that the synergy between antimicrobial agents may lead to biofilm eradication.

Aldred, the glossator of the Lindisfarne Gospels, presents himself as carefully rendering the Latin lemmata in front of him, in terms of both their internal structure and meaning. His work includes a very high number of multiple glosses, which often attempt to clarify the polysemous character of a lemma or to provide additional information. This paper explores the multiple glosses including different lexemes which Aldred added to lexical lemmata in Mark’s Gospel in an attempt to establish whether there is any correlation between Aldred’s ordering practices and the frequency with which he used the interpretamenta to render those lemmata. The results of the study show some preference for placing the interpretamentum which most commonly renders the Latin lemma in first position, although Aldred’s practice is not fully consistent.
