The objective of our research was to analyse the relevant logistic factors influencing energy efficiency in road freight transport, while quantifying the potential for CO2 reduction. We carried out a survey and linked fuel consumption to transport performance parameters in 50 German haulage companies during 2003. Efficiency ranges from 0.8 tkm to 26 tkm for 1 kg CO2 emissions. The results show a high potential for improvements, given a low level of efficiency in vehicle usage and load factor, scarce use of lightweight vehicle design, incorrectly selected vehicle class and a high proportion of empty runs. Efficiency measures are poorly applied.

Next generation Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers will operate in multiple navigation bands. An efficient way to achieve this with lower power and cost is to employ BandPass Sampling (BPS); nevertheless, the sampling operation injects large amounts of jitter noise, which degrades the performance of the receiver. Continuous–Time (CT) Delta–Sigma (ΔΣ) modulators are capable of suppressing this noise but the impact of clock jitter at the output of the Digital– to–Analog Converter (DAC) in the feedback path of the modulator should be taken into account. This paper presents an analytical approach for describing clock jitter in GNSS receivers when a CT–ΔΣ modulator is utilized for Analog–to–Digital Conversion (ADC). The validity of the presented approach is verified through time–domain simulations using a behavioural model of the fourth–order CT–ΔΣ modulator with 1–bit NRZ DAC feedback pulse.

Oversampled narrow-band single-loop and multistage resonator-based bandpass sigma-delta (Σ-Δ) modulators that can accommodate different passband center to sampling frequency ratios are reported. These tunable bandpass configurations are designed by analytically determining and subsequently verifying through detailed empirical simulations the required compensation hardware to deliver enhanced noise-shaping. It is demonstrated that comparatively superior in-band signal-to-noise ratios and dynamic ranges are attributed to the inclusion of appropriate digital feedforward and feedback compensators within these structures.

This paper presents a comparative study of complex single-bit and multi-bit sigma-delta modulators that are capable of providing concurrent multiple-band noise-shaping for multi-tone narrow-band input signals. The concepts applied for the three design methodologies are based on the noise transfer functions of complex comb, complex slink and complex multi-notch filters.

The paper addresses road freight transport operations during the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. It presents work carried out prior to the Games to understand pre-Games patterns of freight deliveries in London (for both light and heavy goods vehicles) and the results of modelling work carried out to assess the likely impacts of the Games road restrictions on freight operations. The modelling results indicated that increases in total hours travelled carrying out collection and delivery work would range from 1.4% to 11.4% in the six sectors considered. The results suggested increases in hours travelled in excess of 3.5% in four of the six sectors modelled. The possible actions that could be taken by organizations to reduce these negative impacts were also modelled and the results indicated that such actions would help to mitigate the impact of the road restrictions imposed on operators during the Games. The actual impacts of the 2012 Games on transport both in general terms and specifically in terms of freight transport are also discussed, together with the success of the actions taken by Transport for London (TfL) to help the road freight industry. The potential freight transport legacy of the London 2012 Games in terms of achieving more sustainable urban freight transport is considered and the steps being taken by TfL to help ensure that such a legacy can be realized are discussed. Such steps include policy-makers continuing to collaborate closely with the freight industry through the ‘London Freight Forum’, and TfL's efforts to encourage and support companies revising their delivery and collection times to the off-peak; improving freight planning in the design and management of TfL-funded road schemes; electronic provision of traffic information by TfL to the freight industry, and the further development of freight journey planning tools.
