This paper explores the role of diasporic subjects in China’s heritage-making through a case study of the Turtle Garden built by Tan Kah Kee in Xiamen, China. Tan is the first person with Overseas Chinese background who built museums in the P.R. China and has been regarded as a symbol of Overseas Chinese patriotism. This paper argues that the Turtle Garden, conceptualised as a postcolonial ‘carnivalesque’ space, is more than a civic museum for public education. It reflects the owner’s highly complex and sometimes conflicting museum outlook embedded in his life experience as a migrant, his encounter with (British) colonialism in Malaya, and integrated with his desire and despair about the Chinese Communist Party’s nation-building project in the 1950s. Rather than a sign of devotion to the socialist motherland as simplistically depicted in China’s discourse, the garden symbolises Tan’s last ‘spiritual world’ where he simultaneously engaged with soul-searching as a returned Overseas Chinese and alternative diasporic imagining of Chinese identities and nation. It brings to light the value of heritage-making outside centralised heritage discourses, and offers an invaluable analytical lens to disentangle the contested and ever shifting relationship between diasporic subjects, cultural heritage and nation-(re)building in the Chinese context and beyond.

This paper investigates the recent trend for cathedrals in England to develop a wider and more ambitious scope to their event and activity programmes. It sets out to explore the types of events now hosted at cathedrals, to consider barriers to such ambitions and the opportunities presented by event programming to develop new audiences and grow attendances. The research focuses on the 42 Anglican cathedrals of England and has involved a review of recent reports published by church and cathedral organisations, supported by an in-depth review of event activity and objectives at five selected cathedrals in southern England. Despite declining general church attendance in England, cathedrals have enjoyed two decades of attendance growth both as places of worship and as tourist attractions, partly a reflection of a more complex contemporary search for multi-faceted types of spirituality. The paper explores how events can tap into the realm of individual spiritual capital and demonstrates the rich diversity of events now being hosted by cathedrals. The paper offers a new categorisation of ecclesiastical/liturgical events, cultural and community events and openly commercial event activity. Barriers remain but key facilitating factors have been new investment in event expertise and professionalism, encouragement to experiment by key funding bodies such as the Heritage Lottery Fund and the embracing of new forms of spirituality. The diversity of cathedral events reflects a new found growth in the nurturing of “spiritual capital” amongst both worshippers and tourists.
Novel P(3HB) Composite Films Containing Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles for Wound Healing Applications

Bioactive glass (BG) is considered an ideal material for haemostasis as it releases Ca2+ ions upon hydration, which is required to support thrombosis. In this study the effect of the presence of the BG nanoparticles in P(3HB) microsphere films on the structural properties, thermal properties and biocompatibility of the films were studied. The nanoscaled bioactive glass with a high surface area was also tested for its in vitro haemostatic efficacy and was found to be able to successfully reduce the clot detection time. In an effort to study the effect of the roughness induced by the formation of HA on the cellular functions such as cell adhesion, cell mobility and cell differentiation, the composite films were immersed in SBF for a period of 1, 3 and 7 days. From the SEM images the surface of the P(3HB)/n-BG composite microsphere films appeared fairly uniform and smooth on day 1, however on day 3 and day 7 a rough and uneven surface was observed. The presence of HA on the composite microsphere films on day 3 and day 7 influenced the surface roughness of the films. However, when the P(3HB)/n-BG composite microspheres with enhanced surface roughness were tested for biocompatibility, reduced amount of protein adsorption and cell adhesion were observed. This study thus revealed that there is an optimal surface roughness for the P(3HB) microsphere films for increased cell adhesion, beyond which it could be deleterious for cell adhesion and differentiation.
