Activated carbons with high metal content have been prepared by the pyrolysis of ethylene tar with dissolved metal acetylacetonates (Ti, V, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) and subsequent activation with KOH of the pitch obtained in pyrolysis. These metal compounds decompose during the pyrolysis of ethylene tar yielding metal nanoparticles formed by metal and/or oxide which are homogeneously distributed in the pitch and remain in the activated carbon, so that the concentration of metal is, in most cases, 4–5 times higher than in the pristine ethylene tar. Since KOH is an effective activating agent, all activated carbons combine a high porosity development with a high metal content. In some of the carbons, such as P2FeA (3.3% Fe, pore volume 1.84 cm3/g, BET surface area 3270 m2/g), there is even an increase in the pore volume when compared to the activated carbon prepared in the same way without metal, in spite of the fact that the metal increases the weight of carbon without contributing to the adsorptive capacity. It seems that iron, on the one hand modifies the pyrolysis to give a pitch with larger mesophase content and on the other hand it locally catalyzes carbon gasification with the CO2 produced along the synthesis of the carbon. In addition to its influence on activation, iron promotes the formation of graphitic carbon fibers.

Two petroleum residues were pyrolyzed under two different conditions to obtain pitches with low or high mesophase content. The effect of the KOH: precursor ratio and the activation temperature on the packing density and porous texture of the carbons have been studied and optimized. Activated carbons combining high micropore volume (>1 cm3/g) and high packing density (0.7 g/cm3) have been successfully prepared. Regarding excess methane adsorption capacities, the best results (160 cm3 (STP)/cm3 at 25 °C and 3.5 MPa) were obtained using the pitch with the higher content of the more organized mesophase, activated at relatively low temperature (700 °C), with a medium KOH: precursor ratio (3:1). Some of the activated carbons exhibit enhanced adsorption capacity at high pressure, giving values as high as 175 cm3 (STP)/cm3 at 25 °C and 5 MPa and 200 cm3 (STP)/cm3 at 25 °C and 10 MPa (the same amount as in an empty cylinder but at half of the pressure), indicating a contribution of large micropores and narrow mesopores to adsorption at high pressure. The density of methane in pores between 1 and 2.5 nm at pressure up to 10 MPa was estimated to understand their contribution to the total adsorption capacity.

Bacteria are able to induce carbonate precipitation although the participation of microbial or chemical processes in speleothem formation remains a matter of debate. In this study, the origin of carbonate depositions such as moonmilk, an unconsolidated microcrystalline formation with high water content, and the consolidation of carbonate precipitates into hard speleothems were analyzed. The utilized methods included measurements of the composition of stable isotopes in these precipitates, fluorimetric determinations of RNA/DNA ratios and respirometric estimations in Altamira Cave. Results from isotope composition showed increases of the δ18O and δ13C ratios from moonmilk in the very first stages of formation toward large speleothems. Estimates of RNA/DNA ratios suggested an inactivation of microorganisms from incipient moonmilk toward consolidated deposits of calcium carbonate. Respiratory activity of microorganisms also showed a significant decrease in samples with accumulated calcite. These results suggest that bacterial activity induces the conditions required for calcium carbonate precipitation, initiating the first stages of deposition. Progressive accumulation of carbonate leads towards a less favorable environment for the development of bacteria. On consolidated speleothems, the importance of bacteria in carbonate deposition decreases and chemical processes gain importance in the deposition of carbonates.

In this work, particleboards manufactured with Oceanic Posidonia waste and bonded with cement are investigated. The particleboards are made with 3/1.5/0.5 parts of cement per part of Posidonia waste. The physical properties of bulk density, swelling, surface absorption, and dimensional changes due to relative humidity as well as the mechanical properties of modulus of elasticity, bending strength, surface soundness, perpendicular tensile strength and impact resistance are studied. In terms of the above properties, the best results were obtained for particleboards with high cement content and when the waste “leaves” are treated (crushed) before board fabrication, due to internal changes to the board structure under these conditions. Based on the results of fire tests, the particleboard is non-flammable without any fire-resistant treatment.

Alternative energy technologies are greatly hindered by significant limitations in materials science. From low activity to poor stability, and from mineral scarcity to high cost, the current materials are not able to cope with the significant challenges of clean energy technologies. However, recent advances in the preparation of nanomaterials, porous solids, and nanostructured solids are providing hope in the race for a better, cleaner energy production. The present contribution critically reviews the development and role of mesoporosity in a wide range of technologies, as this provides for critical improvements in accessibility, the dispersion of the active phase and a higher surface area. Relevant examples of the development of mesoporosity by a wide range of techniques are provided, including the preparation of hierarchical structures with pore systems in different scale ranges. Mesoporosity plays a significant role in catalysis, especially in the most challenging processes where bulky molecules, like those obtained from biomass or highly unreactive species, such as CO2 should be transformed into most valuable products. Furthermore, mesoporous materials also play a significant role as electrodes in fuel and solar cells and in thermoelectric devices, technologies which are benefiting from improved accessibility and a better dispersion of materials with controlled porosity.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the plastics most extensively used due to its versatility. The demand of PVC resin in Europe during 2012 reached 5000 ktonnes1. PVC waste management is a big problem because of the high volume generated all over the world and its chlorine content. End-of-life PVC is mainly mixed with municipal solid waste (MSW) and one common disposal option for this is waste-to-energy incineration (WtE). The presence of plastics such as PVC in the fuel mix increases the heating value of the fuel. PVC has two times higher energy content than MSW ‒around 20 MJ/kg vs 10 MJ/kg, respectively. However, the high chlorine content in PVC resin, 57 wt.%, may be a source for the formation of hazardous chlorinated organic pollutants in thermal processes. Chlorine present in the feedstock of WtE plants plays an important role in the formation of (i) chlorine (Cl2) and (ii) hydrochloric gas (HCl), both of them responsible for corrosion, and (iii) chlorinated organic pollutants2. In this work, pyrolytic and oxidative thermal degradation of PVC resin were carried out in a laboratory scale reactor at 500 ºC in order to analyze the influence of the reaction atmosphere on the emissions evolved. Special emphasis was put on the analysis of chlorinated organic pollutants such as polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDFs) and other related compounds like polychlorobenzenes (PCBzs), polychlorophenols (PCPhs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Another objective of this work was to compare the results with those of a previous work3 in which emissions at different temperatures in both pyrolysis and combustion of another PVC resin had been studied; in that case, experiments for PCDD/Fs emissions had been performed only at 850 ºC.

Nanostructured carbons with relatively high nitrogen content (3–8%) and different micro and mesoporosity ratio were prepared by activation of polyaniline (PANI) with a ZnCl2–NaCl mixture in the proportion of the eutectic (melting point 270 °C). It was found that the activated carbons consisted of agglomerated nanoparticles. ZnCl2 plays a key role in the development of microporosity and promotes the binding between PANI nanoparticles during heat treatment, whereas NaCl acts as a template for the development of mesoporosity of larger size. Carbons with high micropore and mesopore volumes, above 0.6 and 0.8 cm3/g, respectively, have been obtained. Furthermore, these materials have been tested for CO2 capture and storage at pressures up to 4 MPa. The results indicate that the nitrogen groups present in the surface do not seem to affect to the amount of CO2 adsorbed, not detecting strong interactions between CO2 molecules and nitrogen functional groups of the carbon, which are mainly pyridinic and pyrrolic groups.
