One option to optimize carbon materials for supercapacitor applications is the generation of surface functional groups that contribute to the pseudocapacitance without losing the designed physical properties. This requires suitable functionalization techniques able to selectively introduce a given amount of electroactive oxygen groups. In this work, the influence of the chemical and electrochemical oxidation methods, on the chemical and physical properties of a zeolite templated carbon (ZTC), as a model carbon material, have been studied and compared. Although both oxidation methods generally produce a loss of the original ZTC physical properties with increasing amount of oxidation, the electrochemical method shows much better controllability and, unlike chemical treatments, enables the generation of a large number of oxygen groups (O = 11000- 3300 μmol/g), with a higher proportion of active functionalities, while retaining a high surface area (ranging between 1900-3500 m2/g), a high microporosity and an ordered 3-D structure.

Boron-doped diamond electrodes have emerged as anodic material due to their high physical, chemical and electrochemical stability. These characteristics make it particularly interesting for electrochemical wastewater treatments and especially due to its high overpotential for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction. Diamond electrodes present the maximum efficiency in pollutant removal in water, just limited by diffusion-controlled electrochemical kinetics. Results are presented for the elimination of benzoic acid and for the electrochemical treatment of synthetic tannery wastewater. The results indicate that diamond electrodes exhibit the best performance for the removal of total phenols, COD, TOC, and colour.

The template carbonization technique enables the production of porous carbons and carbon-based composites with precisely designed, controlled pore structures. The resulting templated carbons are therefore useful to investigate and understand the relation between carbon nanostructure and electrocapacitive properties. In this short review paper, we introduce our works on electrochemical capacitance using zeolite-templated carbons and carbon-coated anodic aluminum oxide.

The use of two different materials as electrodes allows the construction of asymmetric and hybrid capacitors cells with enhanced energy and power density. This approach is especially well-suited for overcoming the limitations of pseudocapacitive materials that provide a huge capacitance boost, but in a limited potential window. In this work, we introduce the concepts and protocols that are required for a successful design of such systems, which is illustrated by the construction of an asymmetric hybrid cell where a zeolite-templated carbon and an ultraporous activated carbon have been combined.

From the perspective of the sociology of professions, every professional activity should have its own clearly circumscribed and regulated sphere of action. Such an articulation facilitates the regulation of the production of a given profession as well as the way in which it is practiced. The purpose of the research reported here was to provide a comprehensive review and evaluation of the regulatory framework governing the advertising sector in Spain. To this end, the authors analysed external regulatory legislation and self-regulatory codes extracted from the data base of the Asociación para la Autoregulación de la Comunicación Comercial (Autocontrol) that had been enacted or adopted between 1988, the year that Law 11/1998 on General Telecommunications entered into force, and 2003 as well as other relevant documents retrieved from the Boletin Oficial del Estado (BOE) pertaining to the same period. Findings indicate that although there has been a groundswell of legislation governing advertising practices in Spain since 1988, especially at the regional level, lawmakers have focused on the content of advertising messages and shown very little interest in regulating the professions of advertising and public relations. Furthermore, Spanish legislation enacted in 2003 and EU policies appear to have encouraged the adoption of voluntary codes of ethics. Sectors traditionally subject to mandatory advertising regulation, either due to the vulnerability of their target audiences or the potential impact of their commercial messages on public health or the environment, are more likely to develop self-regulatory codes of conduct than others
