Phase thermodynamics is often perceived as a difficult subject that many students never become fully comfortable with. The Gibbsian geometrical framework can help students to gain a better understanding of phase equilibria. An exercise to interpret the vapor-liquid equilibrium of a binary azeotropic mixture, using the equilibrium condition based on the common tangent plane criterion (the Gibbs stability test), is presented in this paper. From a T-composition phase diagram for the mixture, the temperature is set at different values: above, intermediate to, and below the boiling temperatures of the pure components, to intersect different regions of the system. Students prepare an Excel spreadsheet where the Gibbs energy of mixing of the vapor and liquid mixtures are calculated and represented over the whole range of compositions and then, apply the Gibbs stability test to ascertain the aggregation state of the system and to calculate the VL phase equilibrium compositions. Finally, Matlab is used to generate the 3D Gibbs energy of mixing surfaces for both phases over the whole range of temperatures which facilitates the geometrical interpretation of the vapor-liquid equilibrium.

Here, we present experimental and computational evidences to support that rocksalt cubic VO is a strongly correlated metal with non-Fermi-liquid thermodynamics and an unusually strong spin-lattice coupling. An unexpected change of sign of metallic thermopower with composition is tentatively ascribed to the presence of a pseudogap in the density of states. These properties are discussed as signatures of the proximity to a magnetic quantum phase transition. The results are summarized in an electronic phase diagram for the 3d monoxides, which resembles that of other strongly correlated systems. The structural and electronic simplicity of 3d monoxides makes them ideal candidates to progress in the understanding of highly correlated electron systems.

We study the effect of sublattice symmetry breaking on the electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of two-dimensional graphene as well as zigzag terminated one- and zero-dimensional graphene nanostructures. The systems are described with the Hubbard model within the collinear mean field approximation. We prove that for the noninteracting bipartite lattice with an unequal number of atoms in each sublattice, in-gap states still exist in the presence of a staggered on-site potential ±Δ/2. We compute the phase diagram of both 2D and 1D graphene with zigzag edges, at half filling, defined by the normalized interaction strength U/t and Δ/t, where t is the first neighbor hopping. In the case of 2D we find that the system is always insulating, and we find the Uc(Δ) curve above which the system goes antiferromagnetic. In 1D we find that the system undergoes a phase transition from nonmagnetic insulator for Uphase with ferromagnetic edge order and antiferromagnetic interedge coupling. The conduction properties of the magnetic phase depend on Δ and can be insulating, conducting, and even half-metallic, yet the total magnetic moment in the system is zero. We compute the transport properties of a heterojunction with two magnetic graphene ribbon electrodes connected to a finite length armchair ribbon and we find a strong spin filter effect.

We present a theoretical analysis of a spin-dependent multicomponent condensate in two dimensions. The case of a condensate of resonantly photoexcited excitons having two different spin orientations is studied in detail. The energy and the chemical potentials of this system depend strongly on the spin polarization. When electrons and holes are located in two different planes, the condensate can be either totally spin polarized or spin unpolarized, a property that is measurable. The phase diagram in terms of the total density and electron-hole separation is discussed.

A wide class of nanomagnets shows striking quantum behaviour, known as quantum spin tunnelling (QST): instead of two degenerate ground states with opposite magnetizations, a bonding-antibonding pair forms, resulting in a splitting of the ground-state doublet with wave functions linear combination of two classically opposite magnetic states, leading to the quenching of their magnetic moment. Here we study how QST is destroyed and classical behaviour emerges in the case of magnetic adatoms, where, contrary to larger nanomagnets, the QST splitting is in some instances bigger than temperature and broadening. We analyze two different mechanisms for the renormalization of the QST splitting: Heisenberg exchange between different atoms, and Kondo exchange interaction with the substrate electrons. Sufficiently strong spin-substrate and spin-spin coupling renormalize the QST splitting to zero allowing the environmental decoherence to eliminate superpositions between classical states, leading to the emergence of spontaneous magnetization. Importantly, we extract the strength of the Kondo exchange for various experiments on individual adatoms and construct a phase diagram for the classical to quantum transition.
