The assignment of credit through bills of exchange and transmission documents in Andalusi Law

The exchange traffic was a practice that suited the modus vivendi of caravanners and traders in the Islamic world. The inclusion of the Iberian.Peninsula into the most important commercial routes of Muslims – such as the silk route through the North Africa – provides a very solid reason to deepen in the study of the sources that have been preserved about the role that certain credit instruments, which represented an alternative to the coin, might have played in trade centres.

Technical efficiency in the retail food industry: the influence of inventory investment, wage levels, and age of the firm

The objective of this paper is to estimate technical efficiency in retailing; and the influence of inventory investment, wage levels, and firm age on this efficiency. We use the output supermarket chains’ sales volume, calculated isolating the retailer price effect on its sales revenue. This output allows us to estimate a strictly technical concept of efficiency. The methodology is based on the estimation of a stochastic parametric function. The empirical analyses applied to panel data on a sample of 42 supermarket chains between 2000 and 2002 show that inventory investment and wage level have an impact on technical efficiency. In comparison, the effect of these factors on efficiency calculated through a monetary output (sales revenue) shows some differences that could be due to aspects related to product prices.

Optical initialization, readout, and dynamics of a Mn spin in a quantum dot

We have investigated the spin preparation efficiency by optical pumping of individual Mn atoms embedded in CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots. Monitoring the time dependence of the intensity of the fluorescence during the resonant optical pumping process in individual quantum dots allows to directly probe the dynamics of the initialization of the Mn spin. This technique presents the convenience of including preparation and readout of the Mn spin in the same step. Our measurements demonstrate that Mn spin initialization, at zero magnetic field, can reach an efficiency of 75% and occurs in the tens of nanoseconds range when a laser resonantly drives at saturation one of the quantum-dot transition. We observe that the efficiency of optical pumping changes from dot-to-dot and is affected by a magnetic field of a few tens of millitesla applied in Voigt or Faraday configuration. This is attributed to the local strain distribution at the Mn location which predominantly determines the dynamics of the Mn spin under weak magnetic field. The spectral distribution of the spin-flip-scattered photons from quantum dots presenting a weak optical pumping efficiency reveals a significant spin relaxation for the exciton split in the exchange field of the Mn spin.

Conditional Order-m Efficiency of Wastewater Treatment Plants: The Role of Environmental Factors

The growing economic and environmental importance of managing water resources at a global level also entails greater efforts and interest in improving the functioning and efficiency of the increasingly more numerous wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this context, this study analyzes the efficiency of a uniform sample of plants of this type located in the region of Valencia (Spain). The type of efficiency measure used for this (conditional order-m efficiency) allows continuous and discrete contextual variables to be directly involved in the analysis and enables the assessment of their statistical significance and effect (positive or negative). The main findings of the study showed that the quality of the influent water and also the size and age of the plants had a significant influence on their efficiency levels. In particular, as regards the effect of such variables, the findings pointed to the existence of an inverse relationship between the quality of the influent water and the efficiency of the WWTPs. Also, a lower annual volume of treated water and more modern installations showed a positive influence. Additionally, the average efficiency levels observed turned out to be higher than those reported in previous studies.
