CuO/ceria-zirconia catalysts have been prepared, deeply characterised (N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms at −196 °C, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, TEM and H2-TPR) and tested for NO oxidation to NO2 in TPR conditions, and for soot combustion at mild temperature (400 °C) in a NOx/O2 stream. The behaviour has been compared to that of a reference Pt/alumina commercial catalyst. The ceria-zirconia support was prepared by the co-precipitation method, and different amounts of copper (0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 6 wt%) were loaded by incipient wetness impregnation. The results revealed that copper is well-dispersed onto the ceria-zirconia support for the catalysts with low copper loading and CuO particles were only identified by XRD in samples with 4 and 6% of copper. A very low loading of copper increases significantly the activity for the NO oxidation to NO2 with regard to the ceria-zirconia support and an optimum was found for a 4% CuO/ceria-zirconia composition, showing a very high activity (54% at 348 °C). The soot combustion rate at 400 °C obtained with the 2% CuO/ceria-zirconia catalyst is slightly lower to that of 1% Pt/alumina in terms of mass of catalyst but higher in terms of price of catalyst.

Three HPLC methods were optimised for the determination of citric acid, succinic acid and ascorbic acid using a photodiode array detector and fructose, glucose and sucrose using a refractive index in twenty eight citrus juices. The analysis was completed in <16 min. Two different harvests were taken into account for this study. For the season 2011, ascorbic acid content was comprised between 19.4 and 59 mg vitamin C/100 mL; meanwhile for the season 2012, the content was slightly higher for most of the samples ranging from 33.5 to 85.3 mg vitamin C/100 mL. Moreover, the citric acid content in orange juices ranged between 9.7 and 15.1 g L−1, while for clementines the content was clearly lower (i.e. from 3.5 to 8.4 g L−1). However, clementines showed the highest sucrose content with values near to 6 g/100 mL. Finally, a cluster analysis was applied to establish a classification of the citrus species.

In this work, a sodium montmorillonite (Na+-Mt) was modified with two molecules simultaneously, an organic dye, methylene blue (MB), and ethyl hexadecyl dimethyl ammonium (EHDDMA). The synthesised organo-montmorillonites (OMt) combining different proportions of the two molecules were thoroughly characterised and mixed with ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) in order to check the ability of these OMt as pigments and reinforcing additives. The synthesised OMt combining both surfactants, MB and EHDDMA, present higher interlayer distances than those with only MB, which were employed in previous works as nanopigments. When these OMt were incorporated in the EVA matrix, the obtained clay polymer nanocomposites (CPN) showed a high exfoliation degree of the OMt in the polymer, in such a way that at 80% of the cationic exchange capacity (CEC) of the Mt exchanged with EHDDMA, most of the OMt was exfoliated. Moreover, all the obtained CPN showed an increase in the Young's Moduli compared to the EVA reference, and especially those containing higher amounts of MB. The thermal stability of the CPN also increases with the MB content, compared to other CPN including conventional surfactants. The hiding power and colouring power achieved in the CPN are higher even with a much lower load of MB when EHDDMA is exchanged in the Mt.

Background: Haloferax mediterranei is a denitrifying haloarchaeon using nitrate as a respiratory electron acceptor under anaerobic conditions in a reaction catalysed by pNarGH. Other ions such as bromate, perchlorate and chlorate can also be reduced. Methods: Hfx. mediterranei cells were grown anaerobically with nitrate as electron acceptor and chlorate reductase activity measured in whole cells and purified nitrate reductase. Results: No genes encoding (per)chlorate reductases have been detected either in the Hfx. mediterranei genome or in other haloarchaea. However, a gene encoding a chlorite dismutase that is predicted to be exported across the cytoplasmic membrane has been identified in Hfx. mediterranei genome. Cells did not grow anaerobically in presence of chlorate as the unique electron acceptor. However, cells anaerobically grown with nitrate and then transferred to chlorate-containing growth medium can grow a few generations. Chlorate reduction by the whole cells, as well as by pure pNarGH, has been characterised. No clear chlorite dismutase activity could be detected. Conclusions: Hfx. mediterranei pNarGH has its active site on the outer-face of the cytoplasmic membrane and reacts with chlorate and perchlorate. Biochemical characterisation of this enzymatic activity suggests that Hfx. mediterranei or its pure pNarGH could be of great interest for waste water treatments or to better understand biological chlorate reduction in early Earth or Martian environments. General significance: Some archaea species reduce (per)chlorate. However, results here presented as well as those recently reported by Liebensteiner and co-workers [1] suggest that complete perchlorate reduction in archaea follows different rules in terms of biological reactions.

Materials with new visual appearances have emerged over the last few years. In the automotive industry in particular there is a growing interest in materials with new effect finishes, such as metallic, pearlescent, sparkle, and graininess effects. Typically, for solid colours the mean of three measurements with repetitions is sufficient to obtain a representative measurement for colour characterisation. However, gonio-apparent panels have non-homogeneous colours, and there are no studies that recommend the minimum number of repetitions for colour, sparkle, and graininess characterisation of this type of panel. We assume that colour panels incorporating special-effect pigments in their colour recipes will require a higher minimum number of measurements than solid colour panels. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to verify this assumption by using a multiangle BYK-mac spectrophotometer, given that it is currently the only commercial device that can measure colour, sparkle, and graininess values simultaneously. In addition, a possible methodology is given for establishing the minimum number of measurements when characterising gonio-apparent materials using a specific instrument, able to be implemented in future instruments when determining multiple appearance attributes (colour, gloss, sparkle, etc.) for many coloration technologies. Thus, we studied the minimum number of measurements needed to characterise the colour, sparkle, and graininess of three types of sample with solid, metallic, and pearlescent coatings respectively. Twenty measurements were made at twenty random positions (different target areas) of 90 samples. The minimum number of measurements for all these variables was determined on the basis of the point at which the cumulative mean value became constant. Thus, applying new statistical tools, it is clearly shown that metallic and pearlescent panels require more colour measurements than solid panels, in particular when geometries are being measured in a specular direction. As regards texture (sparkle and graininess), more measurements are needed for graininess than for sparkle, and more for metallic panels than for pearlescent panels.
