Highly enantiomerically enriched γ- and δ-lactams have been prepared by a simple and very efficient procedure that involves the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of N-(tert-butylsulfinyl)iminoesters followed by desulfinylation of the nitrogen atom and spontaneous cyclization to the desired lactams during the basic workup procedure. Five- and six-membered ring lactams bearing aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic substituents have been obtained in very high yields and ee’s up to >99%. A slight modification of the procedure also allowed the preparation of ε-lactams in good yields and very high enantioselectivities. Both enantiomers of the final lactams could be prepared with equal efficiency by changing the absolute configuration of the sulfinyl chiral auxiliary.

Equations for the intramolecular surfaces of the 3JHH coupling constants in ethane, ethylene, and acetylene are formulated, and the corresponding coefficients are estimated from calculations at the DFT/B3LYP level. The chosen variables are changes in bond lengths, in the torsion angle φ between the coupled protons Ha and Hb, in bond angles, and in dihedral angles. The 3JHH surface of ethane is formulated as an extended Karplus equation with the coefficients of a truncated Fourier series on the torsion angle φ expanded as second-order Taylor series in the chosen variables taking into account the invariance of 3JHH under reflections and rotations of nuclear coordinates. Partial vibrational contributions from linear and square terms corresponding to changes in the geometry of the Ha − Ca − Cb − Hb fragment are important while those from cross terms are small with a few exceptions. The 3JHH surface of ethane is useful to predict contributions to 3JHH from changes in local geometry of derivatives but vibrational contributions are predicted less satisfactorily. The predicted values at the B3LYP/BS2 level of the 3JHH couplings (vibrational contributions at 300 K) from equilibrium geometries are 9.79 (−0.17) for acetylene, and 17.08 (1.93) and 10.73(0.93) for the trans and cis couplings of ethylene.

The optical spectroscopy of a single InAs quantum dot doped with a single Mn atom is studied using a model Hamiltonian that includes the exchange interactions between the spins of the quantum dot electron-hole pair, the Mn atom, and the acceptor hole. Our model permits linking the photoluminescence spectra to the Mn spin states after photon emission. We focus on the relation between the charge state of the Mn, A0 or A−, and the different spectra which result through either band-to-band or band-to-acceptor transitions. We consider both neutral and negatively charged dots. Our model is able to account for recent experimental results on single Mn doped InAs photoluminescence spectra and can be used to account for future experiments in GaAs quantum dots. Similarities and differences with the case of single Mn doped CdTe quantum dots are discussed.

We consider dilute magnetic doping in the surface of a three dimensional topological insulator where a two dimensional Dirac electron gas resides. We find that exchange coupling between magnetic atoms and the Dirac electrons has a strong and peculiar effect on both. First, the exchange-induced single ion magnetic anisotropy is very large and favors off-plane orientation. In the case of a ferromagnetically ordered phase, we find a colossal magnetic anisotropy energy, of the order of the critical temperature. Second, a persistent electronic current circulates around the magnetic atom and, in the case of a ferromagnetic phase, around the edges of the surface.

Ultrathin and transparent nanostructured Ni(OH)2 films were deposited on conducting glass (F:SnO2) by a urea-based chemical bath deposition method. By controlling the deposition time, the amount of deposited Ni(OH)2 was varied over 7 orders of magnitude. The turnover number for O2 generation, defined as the number of O2 molecules generated per catalytic site (Ni atom) and per second, increases drastically as the electrocatalyst amount decreases. The electrocatalytic activity of the studied samples (measured as the current density at a certain potential) increases with the amount of deposited Ni(OH)2 until a saturation value is already obtained for a thin film of around 1 nm in thickness, composed of Ni(OH)2 nanoplatelets lying flat on the conductive support. The deposition of additional amounts of catalyst generates a porous honeycomb structure that does not improve (only maintains) the electrocatalytic activity. The optimized ultrathin electrodes show a remarkable stability, which indicates that the preparation of highly transparent electrodes, efficient for oxygen evolution, with a minimum amount of nickel is possible.

We analyze the transport properties of a double quantum dot device with both dots coupled to perfect conducting leads and to a finite chain of N noninteracting sites connecting both of them. The interdot chain strongly influences the transport across the system and the local density of states of the dots. We study the case of a small number of sites, so that Kondo box effects are present, varying the coupling between the dots and the chain. For odd N and small coupling between the interdot chain and the dots, a state with two coexisting Kondo regimes develops: the bulk Kondo due to the quantum dots connected to leads and the one produced by the screening of the quantum dot spins by the spin in the finite chain at the Fermi level. As the coupling to the interdot chain increases, there is a crossover to a molecular Kondo effect, due to the screening of the molecule (formed by the finite chain and the quantum dots) spin by the leads. For even N the two Kondo temperatures regime does not develop and the physics is dominated by the usual competition between Kondo and antiferromagnetism between the quantum dots. We finally study how the transport properties are affected as N is increased. For the study we used exact multiconfigurational Lanczos calculations and finite-U slave-boson mean-field theory at T=0. The results obtained with both methods describe qualitatively and also quantitatively the same physics.
