A novel synthesis method for ordered mesoporous carbons is presented. The inverse replication of a silica template was achieved using the carbonization of sucrose within mesoporous KIT-6. Instead of liquid acid etching, as in classical nanocasting, a novel dry chlorine etching procedure for template removal is presented for the first time. The resultant ordered mesostructured carbon material outperforms carbons obtained by conventional hard templating with respect to high specific micro- and mesopore volumes (0.6 and 1.6 cm3 g−1, respectively), due to the presence of a hierarchical pore system. A high specific surface area of 1671 m2 g−1 was achieved, rendering this synthesis route a highly convenient method to produce ordered mesoporous carbons.

Nanostructured TiO2 photocatalysts with small crystalline sizes have been synthesized by sol-gel using the amphiphilic triblock copolymer Pluronic P123 as template. A new synthesis route, based on the treatment of TiO2 xerogels with acid-ethanol mixtures in two different steps, synthesis and extraction-crystallization, has been investigated, analyzing two acids, hydrochloric and hydriodic acid. As reference, samples have also been prepared by extraction-crystallization in ethanol, being these TiO2 materials amorphous and presenting higher porosities. The prepared materials present different degrees of crystallinity depending on the experimental conditions used. In general, these materials exhibit high surface areas, with an important contribution of microporosity and mesoporosity, and with very small size anatase crystals, ranging from 5 to 7 nm. The activity of the obtained photocatalysts has been assessed in the oxidation of propene in gas phase at low concentration (100 ppmv) under a UVA lamp with 365 nm wavelength. In the conditions studied, these photocatalysts show different activities in the oxidation of propene which do not depend on their surface areas, but on their crystallinity and band gap energies, being sample prepared with HCl both during synthesis and in extraction-crystallizations steps, the most active one, with superior performance than Evonik P25.

On the basis of laboratory experiments with model mixtures (active carbon + CuBr2 at different loads), this work studies the formation of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDD/Fs) by de novo synthesis. For the different samples, the temperature of the maximum carbon oxidation rate was determined by thermogravimetric analysis, and a kinetic model was proposed for the degradation of the materials in an oxidizing atmosphere (synthetic air). The effect of the addition of different amounts of CuBr2 was studied, finding that its presence accelerates the degradation of the carbonaceous structure in the presence of oxygen. The thermal degradation of the samples in air is satisfactorily described by a first-order single-reaction model. In addition, combustion runs of one of the mixtures (consisting of activated carbon + 50 wt % CuBr2, pyrolyzed at 700 °C) were performed in a quartz horizontal laboratory furnace. The analysis of the emissions and the solid residue proved the formation of brominated dioxins and furans at 300, 400, and 500 °C, with a maximum yield at 300 °C (91.7 ng/g of total PBDD/Fs) and a higher bromination degree with increasing temperature.

A synthetic procedure to prepare novel materials (surface-mediated fillings) based on robust hierarchical monoliths is reported. The methodology includes the deposition of a (micro- or mesoporous) silica thin film on the support followed by growth of a porous monolithic SiO2 structure. It has been demonstrated that this synthesis is viable for supports of different chemical nature with different inner diameters without shrinkage of the silica filling. The formation mechanism of the surface-mediated fillings is based on a solution/precipitation process and the anchoring of the silica filling to the deposited thin film. The interaction between the two SiO2 structures (monolith and thin film) depends on the porosity of the thin film and yields composite materials with different mechanical stability. By this procedure, capillary microreactors have been prepared and have been proved to be highly active and selective in the total and preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (TOxCO and PrOxCO).

Chiral complexes formed by privileged phosphoramidites derived from chiral binol and optically pure Davies’ amines, and copper(II) triflate, silver(I) triflate or silver(I) benzoate are excellent catalysts for the general 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between nitroalkenes and azomethine ylides generated from α-amino acid derived imino esters. These three methods can be conducted at room temperature to afford the exo-cycloadducts (4,5-trans-2,5-cis-4-nitroprolinates) with high diastereoselectivity and high enantioselectivity. In general, the three procedures are complementary but silver catalysts are more versatile and less sensitive to sterically congested starting materials.

High intensity ultrasound can be used for the production of novel nanomaterials, including metal oxides. According to previous works in this field, the most notable effects are consequence of acoustic cavitation. In this context, we have studied the preparation of different materials in the presence of ultrasound, including N-doped TiO2 nanopowder, NiTiO3 nanorods and MnOx thin films. Ultrasound did not show a significant effect in all the cases. Exclusively for NiTiO3 nanorods a reduction of the final particle size occurs upon ultrasonic irradiation. From these results, it can be concluded that the ultrasound irradiation does not always play a key role during the synthesis of metal oxides. The effects seem to be particularly relevant in those cases where mass transport is highly hindered and in those procedures that require the rupture of nanoparticle aggregates to obtain a homogenous dispersion.

Polypyrrole (PPy) was synthesized by enzyme mediated oxidation of pyrrole using naturally occurring compounds as redox mediators. The catalytic mechanism is an enzymatic cascade reaction in which hydrogen peroxide is the oxidizer and soybean peroxidase, in the presence of acetosyringone, syringaldehyde or vanillin, acts as a natural catalysts. The effect of the initial reaction composition on the polymerization yield and electrical conductivity of PPy was analyzed. Morphology of the PPy particles was studied by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy whereas the chemical structure was studied by X-ray photoelectron and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopic techniques. The redox mediators increased the polymerization yield without a significant modification of the electronic structure of PPy. The highest conductivity of PPy was reached when chondroitin sulfate was used simultaneously as dopant and template during pyrrole polymerization. Electroactive properties of PPy obtained from natural precursors were successfully used in the amperometric quantification of uric acid concentrations. PPy increases the amperometric sensitivity of carbon nanotube screen-printed electrodes toward uric acid detection.

Nanostructured carbons with relatively high nitrogen content (3–8%) and different micro and mesoporosity ratio were prepared by activation of polyaniline (PANI) with a ZnCl2–NaCl mixture in the proportion of the eutectic (melting point 270 °C). It was found that the activated carbons consisted of agglomerated nanoparticles. ZnCl2 plays a key role in the development of microporosity and promotes the binding between PANI nanoparticles during heat treatment, whereas NaCl acts as a template for the development of mesoporosity of larger size. Carbons with high micropore and mesopore volumes, above 0.6 and 0.8 cm3/g, respectively, have been obtained. Furthermore, these materials have been tested for CO2 capture and storage at pressures up to 4 MPa. The results indicate that the nitrogen groups present in the surface do not seem to affect to the amount of CO2 adsorbed, not detecting strong interactions between CO2 molecules and nitrogen functional groups of the carbon, which are mainly pyridinic and pyrrolic groups.

Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) supported on ZnO have been shown to effectively catalyze the direct synthesis of β-ketophosphonates from alkenes or alkynes, and that of vinyl phosphonates from alkynes and diethylphosphite, under air and in the absence of any additive or ligand. When using alkynes as starting materials, the selectivity proved to be dependent on the nature of the alkyne. Thus, alkynes conjugated with an aromatic ring or a carbon–carbon double bond gave β-ketophosphonates as the main reaction products, whereas aliphatic alkynes or alkynes conjugated with a carbonyl group led to the formation of the corresponding vinyl phosphonates.

Dihydronaphthalenes were oxyarylated with o-iodophenols, in PEG-400 at 140 or 170 °C, leading regio- and stereoselectively to 5-carbapterocarpans. By using Pd(OAc)2 (5–10 mol%) as precatalyst and Ag2CO3 (1.1 equiv) as base (conditions A), products were obtained in good to excellent chemical yields, in 5–30 minutes, irrespective of the pattern of substitution the starting materials. Alternatively, when p-hydroxyacetophenone oxime derived palladacycle (1 mol%) was used as precatalyst, and dicyclohexylamine (2 equiv) was used as base (silver-free, conditions B), the corresponding adducts were obtained in moderate to good yields, in 0.5 to 4 hours. Finally, the oxyarylation of dihydronaphthalenes and chromenquinone with o-iodophenols and 3-iodolawsone in PEG-400 under conditions A led regio- and stereoselectively to the formation of carbapterocarpanquinones and pterocarpanquinones in moderate yield.
