A phased-array antenna with switched-beam elements used to combat interference in an indoor wireless communication system is described. The array uses I-bit phase shifters applied to its elements in order to point its main beam in a desired direction and internal switching of elements in order to form nulls towards interference. The array's capability of suppressing interference is verified by studying its radiation patterns and by performing interference-rejection experiments in an indoor multipath environment. Psychological distress is common in cancer patients, however, it is often unrecognized and untreated. We aimed to identify barriers to cancer patients expressing their psychological concerns, and to recommend strategies to assist oncologists to elicit, recognize, and manage psychological distress in their patients. Medline, Psychlit, and the Cochrane databases were searched for articles relating to the detection of emotional distress in patients. Patients can provide verbal and non-verbal information about their emotional state. However, many patients may not reveal emotional issues as they believe it is not a doctor's role to help with their emotional concerns. Moreover, patients may normalize or somatize their feelings. Anxiety and depression can mimic physical symptoms of cancer or treatments, and consequently emotional distress may not be detected. Techniques such as active listening, using open questions and emotional words, responding appropriately to patients' emotional cues, and a patient-centred consulting style can assist in detection. Screening tools for psychological distress and patient question prompt sheets administered prior to the consultation can also be useful. In conclusion, the application of basic communication techniques enhances detection of patients' emotional concerns. Training oncologists in these techniques should improve the psychosocial care of cancer patients.

In this paper the performance of a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless communication system operating in an indoor environment, featuring both line of sight (LOS) and non-line of sight (NLOS) signal propagation, is assessed. In the model the scattering objects are assumed to be uniformly distributed in an area surrounding the transmitting and receiving array antennas. Mutual coupling effects in the arrays are treated in an exact manner. However interactions with scattering objects are taken into account via a single bounce approach. Computer simulations are carried out for the system capacity for varying inter-element spacing in the receiving array for assumed values of LOS/NLOS power fraction and signal to noise ratio (SNR).

The paper presents investigations into multiple input multiple output wireless communication systems, which are carried out from an electromagnetic perspective. The first part of the paper focuses on signal propagation models, which can be used for determining the MIMO system capacity or its performance when various space-time coding schemes are applied. Two types of models are considered. In the first model, array antennas are treated in an exact electromagnetic manner but interactions with scattering objects are incorporated using an approximate single bounce scattering approach. The other model is a simple but exact electromagnetic (EM) model, which takes into account EM interactions between antennas and scatterers. In this model, parallel wire dipoles represent antennas as well as scatterers. The second part of the paper reports on investigations into two types of MIMO testbeds. The first one is a simple transmit/receive diversity tested while the other one is a full MIMO testbed. The paper briefly describes the results obtained during the undertaken investigations

Genetic algorithms (GAs) are known to locate the global optimal solution provided sufficient population and/or generation is used. Practically, a near-optimal satisfactory result can be found by Gas with a limited number of generations. In wireless communications, the exhaustive searching approach is widely applied to many techniques, such as maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) and distance spectrum (DS) techniques. The complexity of the exhaustive searching approach in the MLD or the DS technique is exponential in the number of transmit antennas and the size of the signal constellation for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. If a large number of antennas and a large size of signal constellations, e.g. PSK and QAM, are employed in the MIMO systems, the exhaustive searching approach becomes impractical and time consuming. In this paper, the GAs are applied to the MLD and DS techniques to provide a near-optimal performance with a reduced computational complexity for the MIMO systems. Two different GA-based efficient searching approaches are proposed for the MLD and DS techniques, respectively. The first proposed approach is based on a GA with sharing function method, which is employed to locate the multiple solutions of the distance spectrum for the Space-time Trellis Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (STTC-OFDM) systems. The second approach is the GA-based MLD that attempts to find the closest point to the transmitted signal. The proposed approach can return a satisfactory result with a good initial signal vector provided to the GA. Through simulation results, it is shown that the proposed GA-based efficient searching approaches can achieve near-optimal performance, but with a lower searching complexity comparing with the original MLD and DS techniques for the MIMO systems.

A variety of current and future wired and wireless networking technologies can be transformed into a seamless communication environments through application of context-based vertical handovers. Such seamless communication environments are needed for future pervasive/ubiquitous systems. Pervasive systems are context aware and need to adapt to context changes, including network disconnections and changes in network Quality of Service (QoS). Vertical handover is one of many possible adaptation methods. It allows users to roam freely between heterogeneous networks while maintaining the continuity of their applications. This paper proposes a vertical handover mechanism suitable for multimedia applications in pervasive systems. The paper focuses on the handover decision making process which uses context information regarding user devices, user location, network environment and requested QoS. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. This communication reports a laboratory and plant comparison between the University of Cape Town (UCT) device (capillary) and the McGill University bubble sizing method (imaging). The laboratory work was conducted on single bubbles to establish the accuracy of the techniques by comparing with a reference method (capture in a burette). Single bubble measurements with the McGill University technique showed a tendency to slightly underestimate (4% for a 1.3 mm bubble) and the UCT technique to slightly overestimate (1% for the 1.3 man bubble). Both trends are anticipated from fundamental considerations. In the UCT technique bubble breakup was observed when measuring a 2.7 mm bubble using a 0.5 mm ID capillary tube. A discrepancy of 11% was determined when comparing the techniques in an industrial-scale mechanical flotation cell. The possible sources of bias are discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd.
