This article reports a study of the effects of synthesis parameters on the preparation and formation of mesoporous titania nanopowders by employing a two-step sol-gel method. These materials displayed crystalline domains characteristic of anatase. The first step of the process involved the hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide in a basic aqueous solution mediated by neutral surfactant. The solid product obtained from step 1 was then treated in an acidified ethanol solution containing the same titanium precursor to thicken the pore walls. Low pH and higher loading of the Ti precursor in step 2 produced better mesoporosity and crystallinity of titanium dioxide polymorphs. The resultant powder exhibited a high surface area (73.8 m(2)/g) and large pore volume (0.17 cm(3)/g) with uniform mesopores. These materials are envisaged to be used as precursors for mesoporous titania films as a wide band gap semiconductor in dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells.

Solids concentration and particle size distribution gradually change in the vertical dimension of industrial flotation cells, subject primarily to the flotation cell size and design and the cell operating conditions. As entrainment is a two-step process and involves only the suspended solids in the top pulp region near the pulp-froth interface, the solids suspension characteristics have a significant impact on the overall entrainment. In this paper, a classification function is proposed to describe the state of solids suspension in flotation cells, similar to the definition of degree of entrainment for classification in the froth phase found in the literature. A mathematical model for solids suspension is also developed, in which the classification function is expressed as an exponential function of the particle size. Experimental data collected from three different Outokumpu tank flotation cells in three different concentrators are well fitted by the proposed exponential model. Under the prevailing experimental conditions, it was found that the solids content in the top region was relatively independent of cell operating conditions such as froth height and air rate but dependent on the cell size. Moreover, the results obtained from the total solids tend to be similar to those from a particular gangue mineral and hence may be applied to all minerals in entrainment calculation. Entrainment in flotation can be considered as a two-step process, including the transfer of the suspended solids in the top of the pulp region just below the pulp-froth interface to the froth phase and the transfer of the entrained particles in the froth phase to the concentrate. Both steps have a strong classification characteristic. The degree of entrainment describes the classification effect of the drainage process in the froth phase. This paper briefly reviews two existing models of degree of entrainment. Experimental data were collected from an Outokumpu 3 m(3) tank cell in the Xstrata Mt. Isa Mines copper concentrator. The data are fitted to the models and the effect of cell operating conditions including air rate and froth height on the degree of entrainment is examined on a size-by-size basis. It is found that there is a strong correlation between the entrainment and the water recovery, which is close to lineal. for the fines. The degree of entrainment decreases with increase in particle size. Within the normal range of cell operating conditions, few particles coarser than 50 mu m are recovered by entrainment. In general, the degree of entrainment increases with increase in the ail rate and decreases with increase in the froth height. Air rate and froth height strongly interact with each other and affect the entrainment process mainly via changes in the froth retention time, the froth structure and froth properties. As a result, other mechanisms such as entrapment may become important in recovering the coarse entrained particles. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Schistosoma japonicum paramyosin, a 97 kDa myofibrillar protein, is a recognized vaccine candidate against schistosomiasis. To improve its expression and to identify protective epitopic regions on paramyosin, the published Chinese Schistosoma japonicum paramyosin cDNA sequence was redesigned using Pichia codon usage and divided into four overlapping fragments (fragments 1, 2, 3, 4) of 747, 651, 669 and 678 bp, respectively. These gene fragments were synthesized and expressed in Pichia pastoris (fragments 2 and 3) or E. coli (fragments 1 and 4). The recombinant proteins were produced at high level and purified using a two-step process involving Ni-NTA affinity chromatography and gel filtration. BALB/c mice were immunized subcutaneously three times at 2-week-intervals with the purified proteins formulated in adjuvant Quil A. The protein fragments were highly immunogenic, inducing high, though variable, ELISA antibody titres, and each was shown to resemble native paramyosin in terms of its recognition by the anti-fragment antibodies in Western blotting. The immunized mice were subjected to cercarial challenge 2 weeks after the final injection and promising protective efficacy in terms of significant reductions in worm burdens, worm-pair numbers and liver eggs in the vaccinated mice resulted. There was no apparent correlation between the antibody titres generated and protective efficacy, as all fragments produced effective but similar levels of protection.

Finding single pair shortest paths on surface is a fundamental problem in various domains, like Geographic Information Systems (GIS) 3D applications, robotic path planning system, and surface nearest neighbor query in spatial database, etc. Currently, to solve the problem, existing algorithms must traverse the entire polyhedral surface. With the rapid advance in areas like Global Positioning System (CPS), Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems and laser range scanner, surface models axe becoming more and more complex. It is not uncommon that a surface model contains millions of polygons. The single pair shortest path problem is getting harder and harder to solve. Based on the observation that the single pair shortest path is in the locality, we propose in this paper efficient methods by excluding part of the surface model without considering them in the search process. Three novel expansion-based algorithms are proposed, namely, Naive algorithm, Rectangle-based Algorithm and Ellipse-based Algorithm. Each algorithm uses a two-step approach to find the shortest path. (1) compute an initial local path. (2) use the value of this initial path to select a search region, in which the global shortest path exists. The search process terminates once the global optimum criteria are satisfied. By reducing the searching region, the performance is improved dramatically in most cases.
