The concept of biperfect (noncocommutative) weak Hopf algebras is introduced and their properties are discussed. A new type of quasi-bicrossed products is constructed by means of weak Hopf skew-pairs of the weak Hopf algebras which are generalizations of the Hopf pairs introduced by Takeuchi. As a special case, the quantum double of a finite dimensional biperfect (noncocommutative) weak Hopf algebra is built. Examples of quantum doubles from a Clifford monoid as well as a noncommutative and noncocommutative weak Hopf algebra are given, generalizing quantum doubles from a group and a noncommutative and noncocommutative Hopf algebra, respectively. Moreover, some characterizations of quantum doubles of finite dimensional biperfect weak Hopf algebras are obtained. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Braided m-Lie algebras induced by multiplication are introduced, which generalize Lie algebras, Lie color algebras and quantum Lie algebras. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the braided m-Lie algebras to be strict Jacobi braided Lie algebras are given. Two classes of braided m-Lie algebras are given, which are generalized matrix braided m-Lie algebras and braided m-Lie subalgebras of End(F)M, where M is a Yetter-Drinfeld module over B with dimB < infinity. In particular, generalized classical braided m-Lie algebras sl(q,f)(GM(G)(A),F) and osp(q,l)(GM(G)(A),M,F) of generalized matrix algebra GMG(A) are constructed and their connection with special generalized matrix Lie superalgebra sl(s,f)(GM(Z2)(A(s)),F) and orthosymplectic generalized matrix Lie super algebra osp(s,l) (GM(Z2)(A(s)),M-s,F) are established. The relationship between representations of braided m-Lie algebras and their associated algebras are established.

Background and Aims: We have optimized the isolated perfused mouse kidney (IPMK) model for studying renal vascular and tubular function in vitro using 24-28 g C57BL6J mice; the wild type controls for many transgenic mice. Methods and Results: Buffer composition was optimized for bovine serum albumin concentration (BSA). The effect of adding erythrocytes on renal function and morphology was assessed. Autoregulation was investigated during stepped increases in perfusion pressure. Perfusion for 60 min at 90-110 mmHg with Krebs bicarbonate buffer containing 5.5% BSA, and amino acids produced functional parameters within the in vivo range. Erythrocytes increased renal vascular resistance (3.8 +/- 0.2 vs 2.4 +/- 0.1 mL/min.mmHg, P < 0.05), enhanced sodium reabsorption (FENa = 0.3 +/- 0.08 vs 1.5 +/- 0.7%, P < 0.05), produced equivalent glomerular filtration rates (GFR; 364 +/- 38 vs 400 +/- 9 muL/min per gkw) and reduced distal tubular cell injury in the inner stripe (5.8 +/- 1.7 vs 23.7 +/- 3.1%, P < 0.001) compared to cell free perfusion. The IPMK was responsive to vasoconstrictor (angiotensin II, EC50 100 pM) and vasodilator (methacholine, EC50 75 nM) mediators and showed partial autoregulation of perfusate flow under control conditions over 65-85 mmHg; autoregulatory index (ARI) of 0.66 +/- 0.11. Angiotensin II (100 pM) extended this range (to 65-120 mmHg) and enhanced efficiency (ARI 0.21 +/- 0.02, P < 0.05). Angiotensin II facilitation was antagonized by methacholine (ARI 0.76 +/- 0.08) and papaverine (ARI 0.91 +/- 0.13). Conclusion: The IPMK model is useful for studying renal physiology and pathophysiology without systemic neurohormonal influences.

Relationships between cadmium (Cd) body burden, kidney function and coumarin metabolism were investigated using two groups of 197 and 200 healthy Thais with men and women in nearly equal numbers. A mean age of one group was 30.5 years and it was 39.3 years for the other group. Of 397, 20 subjects (5%) excreted urine Cd between 1.4 mug/g and 3.8 mug/g creatinine and these subjects faced 10-15% increase in the probability of having abnormal urinary excretion of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG-uria). The prevalence of NAG-uria varied with Cd body burden in a dose-dependent manner (chi(2) = 22, P < 0.008). Also NAG-nuria was one of the three kidney effect markers tested that showed the greatest strength of correlation with urine Cd in both men and women (r = 0.48 P < 0.001). In addition, urine Cd excretion of men and women showed a positive correlation (r = 0.46 to 0.54. P < 0.001) with urine 7-hydroxycoumarin (7-OHC) excretion which was used as a marker of liver cytochrome P450 2A6 (CYP2A6) enzyme activity. Urinary CA excretion accounted for 25% of the total variation in urine 7-OHC excretion (P < 0.001). These data suggest that Cd may increase the expression of CYP2A6 in liver, resulting in enhanced coumarin metabolism in subjects with high Cd body burden. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Background. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) agonists. which are known to be critical factors in lipid metabolism, have also been reported to reduce proteinuria. The mechanism and its relevance to progressive nephropathy have not been determined. The aims of this study were to assess the direct effects of a PPARgamma agonist on tubular cell albumin uptake, proinflammatory and profibrotic markers of renal pathology, using an opossum kidney model of proximal tubular cells. Methods. Cells were exposed to pioglitazone (10 mumol/L) in the presence and absence of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) 100 mug/mL +/- exposure to albumin 1 mg/mL. Results were expressed relative to control (5 mmol/L glucose) conditions. Results. Pioglitazone caused a dose-dependent increase in tubular cell albumin uptake (P < 0.0001). Despite the increase in albumin reabsorption, no concurrent increase in inflammatory or profibrotic markers were observed. Exposure to LDL increased monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) (P < 0.05) and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) (P < 0.05) production. which were reversed in the presence of pioglitazone. LDL induced increases in MCP-1 and TGF-β1 were independent of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) transcriptional activity. In contrast. tubular exposure to albumin increased tubular protein uptake, in parallel with an increase in MCP-1 (P = 0.05): TGF-β1 (P < 0.02) and NF-kappaB transcriptional activity (P < 0.05). which were unaffected by concurrent exposure to pioglitazone. Conclusion. These findings suggest that dyslipidemia potentiates renal pathology through mechanisms that may be modified PPARγ activation independent of NF-κB transcriptional activitv. In contrast, tubular exposure to protein induces renal damage through NF-κB-dependent mechanisms that are Unaffected by PPARγ activation.

Sulfate (SO42-) is an important anion regulating many metabolic and cellular processes. Maintenance Of SO42- homeostasis occurs in the renal proximal tubule via membrane transport proteins. Two SO42- transporters that have been characterized and implicated in regulating serum SO42- levels are: NaSi- 1, a Na+-SO4 (2-) cotransporter located at the brush border membrane and Sat-1, a SO4 (2-) -anion exchanger located on the basolateral membranes of proximal tubular cells. Unlike Sat-1, for which very few studies have looked at regulation of its expression, NaSi- 1 has been shown to be regulated by various hormones and dietary conditions in vivo. To study this further, NaSj- I (SLC13A1) and Sat- I (SLC26A1) gene structures were determined and recent studies have characterized their respective gene promoters. This review presents the current understanding of the transcriptional regulation of NaSj- I and Sat- 1, and describes possible pathogenetic implications which arise as a consequence of altered SO(4)(2-)homeostasis. CIC-5 is a chloride (Cl-) channel expressed in renal tubules and is critical for normal tubular function. Loss of function nonsense or missense mutations in CIC-5 are associated with Dent's disease, a condition in which patients present with low molecular weight (LMW) proteinuria (including albuminuria), hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis. Several key studies in CIC-5 knockout mice have shown that the proteinuria results from defective tubular reabsorption of proteins. CIC-5 is typically regarded as an intracellular Cl- channel and thus the defect in this receptor-mediated uptake pathway was initially attributed to the failure of the early endosomes to acidify correctly. CIC-5 was postulated to play a key role in transporting the Cl- ions required to compensate for the movement of H+ during endosomal acidification. However, more recent studies suggest additional roles for CIC-5 in the endocytosis of albumin. CIC-5 is now known to be expressed at low levels at the cell surface and appears to be a key component in the assembly of the macromolecular complex involved in protein endocytosis. Furthermore, mutations in CIC-5 affect the trafficking of v-H+-ATPase and result in decreased expression of the albumin receptor megalin/cubulin. Thus, the expression of CIC-5 at the cell surface as well as its presence in endosomes appears to be essential for normal protein uptake by the renal proximal tubule. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Novel carbon nanostructures can serve as effective storage media for methane, a source of clean energy for the future. We have used Grand Canonical Monte Carlo Simulation for the modeling of methane storage at 293 K and pressures up to 80 MPa in idealized bundles of (10,10) armchair-type single-walled carbon nanotubes and wormlike carbon pores. We have found that these carbon nanomaterials can be treated as the world's smallest high-capacity methane storage vessels. Our simulation results indicate that such novel carbon nanostructures can reach a high volumetric energy storage, exceeding the US FreedomCAR Partnership target of 2010 (5.4 MJ dm(-3)), at low to moderate pressures ranging from 1 to 7 MPa at 293 K. On the contrary, in the absence of these nanomaterials, methane needs to be compressed to approximately 13 MPa at 293 K to achieve the same target. The light carbon membranes composed of bundles of single-walled carbon nanotubes or wormlike pores efficiently physisorb methane at low to moderate pressures at 293 K, which we believe should be particularly important for automobiles and stationary devices. However, above 15-20 MPa at 293 K, all investigated samples of novel carbon nanomaterials are not as effective when compared with compression alone since the stored volumetric energy and power saturate at values below those of the bulk, compressed fluid.

A class of algebras forms a variety if it is characterised by a collection of identities. There is a well-known method, often called the standard construction, which gives rise to algebras from m-cycle systems. It is known that the algebras arising from {1}-perfect m-cycle systems form a variety for m is an element of {3, 5} only, and that the algebras arising from {1, 2}-perfect m-cycle systems form a variety for m is an element of {3, 5, 7} only. Here we give, for any set K of positive integers, necessary and sufficient conditions under which the algebras arising from K-perfect m-cycle systems form a variety. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.
