We determine the phase diagram of the half-filled two-leg ladder both at weak and strong coupling, taking into account the Cu d(x)(2)-y(2) and the O p(x) and p(y) orbitals. At weak coupling, renormalization group flows are interpreted with the use of bosonization. Two different models with and without outer oxygen orbitals are examined. For physical parameters, and in the absence of the outer oxygen orbitals, the D-Mott phase arises; a dimerized phase appears when the outer oxygen atoms are included. We show that the circulating current phase that preserves translational symmetry does not appear at weak coupling. In the opposite strong-coupling atomic limit the model is purely electrostatic and the ground states may be found by simple energy minimization. The phase diagram so obtained is compared to the weak-coupling one.

The phase equilibria in the Al-Fe-Zn-O system in the range 1250 °C to 1695 °C in air have been experimentally studied using equilibration and quenching techniques followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The phase diagram of the binary Al2O3-ZnO system and isothermal sections of the Al2O3-“Fe2O3”-ZnO system at 1250 °C, 1400 °C, and 1550 °C have been constructed and reported for the first time. The extents of solid solutions in the corundum (Al,Fe)2O3, hematite (Fe,Al)2O3, Al2O3*Fe2O3 phase (Al,Fe)2O3, spinel (Al,Fe,Zn)O4, and zincite (Al,Zn,Fe)O primary phase fields have been measured. Corundum, hematite, and Al2O3*Fe2O3 phases dissolve less than 1 mol pct zinc oxide. The limiting compositions of Al2O3*Fe2O3 phase measured in this study at 1400 °C are slightly nonstoichiometric, containing more Al2O3 then previously reported. Spinel forms an extensive solid solution in the Al2O3-“Fe2O3”-ZnO system in air with increasing temperature. Zincite was found to dissolve up to 7 mole pct of aluminum in the presence of iron at 1550 °C in air. A meta-stable Al2O3-rich phase of the approximate composition Al8FeZnO14+x was observed at all of the conditions investigated. Aluminum dissolved in the zincite in the presence of iron appears to suppress the transformation from a round to platelike morphology.

Miscibility and phase separation in the blends of phenolphthalein poly(aryl ether ketone) (PPAEK) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The PPAEK/PEO blends prepared by solution casting from N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) displayed single composition-dependent glass transition temperatures (T-g), intermediate between those of the pure components, suggesting that the blend system is miscible in the amorphous state at all compositions. All the blends underwent phase separation at higher temperatures and the system exhibited a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior. A step-heating thermal analysis was designed to determine the phase boundaries with DSC. The significant changes in the thermal properties of blends were utilized to judge the mixing status for the blends and the phase diagram was thus established. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. We derive gap equations for superconductivity in coexistence with ferromagnetism. We treat singlet and triplet states With either equal spin pairing (ESP) or opposite spin pairing (OSP) states, and study the behaviour of these states as a function of exchange splitting. For the s-wave singlet state we find that our gap equations correctly reproduce the Clogston-Chandrasekhar limiting behaviour and the phase diagram of the Baltensperger-Sarma equation (excluding the FFLO region). The singlet superconducting order parameter is shown to be independent of exchange splitting at zero temperature, as is assumed in the derivation of the Clogston-Chandrasekhar limit. P-wave triplet states of the OSP type behave similarly to the singlet state as a function of exchange splitting. On the other hand, ESP triplet states show a very different behaviour. In particular, there is no Clogston-Chandrasekhar limiting and the superconducting critical temperature, T-C, is actually increased by exchange splitting.

A phase diagram of the pseudoternary system ethyloleate, polyoxyethylene 20 sorbitan mono-oleate/sorbitan monolaurate and water with butanol as a cosurfactant was prepared. Areas containing optically isotropic, low viscosity one-phase systems were identified and systems therein designated as w/o droplet-, bicontinuous- or solution-type microemulsions using conductivity, viscosity, cryo-field emission scanning electron microscopy and self-diffusion NMR. Nanoparticles were prepared by interfacial polymerization of selected w/o droplet, bicontinuous- or solution-type microemulsions with ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate. Morphology of the particles and entrapment of the water-soluble model protein ovalbumin were investigated. Addition of monomer to the different types of microemulsions (w/o droplet, bicontinuous, solution) led to the formation of nanoparticles, which were similar in size (similar to 250 nm), polydispersity index (similar to 0.13), zeta-potential (similar to-17 mV) and morphology. The entrapment of the protein within these particles was up to 95%, depending on the amount of monomer used for polymerization and the type of microemulsion used as a polymerization template. The formation of particles with similar characteristics from templates having different microstructure is surprising, particularly considering that polymerization is expected to occur at the water-oil interface by base-catalysed polymerization. Dynamics within the template (stirring, viscosity) or indeed interfacial phenomena relating to the solid-liquid interface appear to be more important for the determination of nanoparticle morphology and characteristics than the microstructure of the template system. We study a generalized Hubbard model on the two-leg ladder at zero temperature, focusing on a parameter region with staggered flux (SF)/d-density wave (DDW) order. To guide our numerical calculations, we first investigate the location of a SF/DDW phase in the phase diagram of the half-filled weakly interacting ladder using a perturbative renormalization group (RG) and bosonization approach. For hole doping 6 away from half-filling, finite-system density-matrix renormalizationgroup (DMRG) calculations are used to study ladders with up to 200 rungs for intermediate-strength interactions. In the doped SF/DDW phase, the staggered rung current and the rung electron density both show periodic spatial oscillations, with characteristic wavelengths 2/delta and 1/delta, respectively, corresponding to ordering wavevectors 2k(F) and 4k(F) for the currents and densities, where 2k(F) = pi(1 - delta). The density minima are located at the anti-phase domain walls of the staggered current. For sufficiently large dopings, SF/DDW order is suppressed. The rung density modulation also exists in neighboring phases where currents decay exponentially. We show that most of the DMRG results can be qualitatively understood from weak-coupling RG/bosonization arguments. However, while these arguments seem to suggest a crossover from non-decaying correlations to power-law decay at a length scale of order 1/delta, the DMRG results are consistent with a true long-range order scenario for the currents and densities. We review the role of strong electronic correlations in quasi-two-dimensional organic charge transfer salts such as (BEDT-TTF)(2)X, (BETS)(2)Y, and beta'-[Pd(dmit)(2)](2)Z. We begin by defining minimal models for these materials. It is necessary to identify two classes of material: the first class is strongly dimerized and is described by a half-filled Hubbard model; the second class is not strongly dimerized and is described by a quarter-filled extended Hubbard model. We argue that these models capture the essential physics of these materials. We explore the phase diagram of the half-filled quasi-two-dimensional organic charge transfer salts, focusing on the metallic and superconducting phases. We review work showing that the metallic phase, which has both Fermi liquid and 'bad metal' regimes, is described both quantitatively and qualitatively by dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). The phenomenology of the superconducting state is still a matter of contention. We critically review the experimental situation, focusing on the key experimental results that may distinguish between rival theories of superconductivity, particularly probes of the pairing symmetry and measurements of the superfluid stiffness. We then discuss some strongly correlated theories of superconductivity, in particular the resonating valence bond (RVB) theory of superconductivity. We conclude by discussing some of the major challenges currently facing the field. These include parameterizing minimal models, the evidence for a pseudogap from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments, superconductors with low critical temperatures and extremely small superfluid stiffnesses, the possible spin- liquid states in kappa-(ET)(2)Cu-2(CN)(3) and beta'-[Pd(dmit)(2)](2)Z, and the need for high quality large single crystals.

We discuss the superfluid phase transition of a strongly interacting Fermi gas with unequal ( asymmetric) chemical potentials in two pairing hyperfine states, and map out its phase diagram near the BCS-BEC crossover. Our approach includes the fluctuation contributions of preformed Cooper pairs to the thermodynamic potential at finite temperature. We show that, below a critical difference in chemical potentials between species, a normal gas is unstable towards the formation of either a finite-momentum paired Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconducting phase or a uniform superfluid, depending on the asymmetry and interaction strengths. We determine the value of critical chemical potential mismatch, and find that it is consistent with a recent measurement by Zwierlein et al. ( Science, 311 ( 2006) 492).

We introduce a novel way of measuring the entropy of a set of values undergoing changes. Such a measure becomes useful when analyzing the temporal development of an algorithm designed to numerically update a collection of values such as artificial neural network weights undergoing adjustments during learning. We measure the entropy as a function of the phase-space of the values, i.e. their magnitude and velocity of change, using a method based on the abstract measure of entropy introduced by the philosopher Rudolf Carnap. By constructing a time-dynamic two-dimensional Voronoi diagram using Voronoi cell generators with coordinates of value- and value-velocity (change of magnitude), the entropy becomes a function of the cell areas. We term this measure teleonomic entropy since it can be used to describe changes in any end-directed (teleonomic) system. The usefulness of the method is illustrated when comparing the different approaches of two search algorithms, a learning artificial neural network and a population of discovering agents. The phase equilibria and liquidus temperatures in the binary SiO2-ZnO system and in the ternary Al2O3-SiO2-ZnO system at low Al2O3 concentrations have been experimentally determined using the equilibration and quenching technique followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. In the SiO2-ZnO system, two binary eutectics involving the congruently melting willemite (Zn2SiO4) were found at 1448 +/- 5 degrees C and 0.52 +/- 0.01 mole fraction ZnO and at 1502 +/- 5 degrees C and 0.71 +/- 0.01 mole fraction ZnO, respectively. The two ternary eutectics involving willemite previously reported in the Al2O3SiO2-ZnO system were found to be at 1315 +/- 5 degrees C and 1425 +/- 25 T, respectively. The compositions of the eutectics are 0.07, 0.52, and 0.41 and 0.05, 0.28, and 0.67 mole fraction Al2O3, SiO2, and ZnO, respectively. The results of the present investigation are significantly different from the results of previous studies.

Glycerate-based surfactants are a new class of swelling amphiphiles which swell to a finite degree with water. Among this class of surfactants, oleyl (cis-octadec-9-enyl) glycerate is very similar in structure to a well characterized mesophase-forming lipid, glyceryl monooleate (GMO). Despite the similar structural characteristics, a subtle change in connectivity of the ester bond substantially alters the binary surfactant-water phase behaviour. Whereas the phase behaviour of GMO is diverse and dominated by cubic phases, the phase behaviour of oleyl glycerate and a terpenoid analogue phytanyl (3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-hexadecane) glycerate is much simplified. Both exhibit an inverse hexagonal phase (H-II), which is stable to dilution with excess water, and an inverse micellar phase (L-II) at ambient temperatures. The inverse hexagonal phases formed by oleyl glycerate and phytanyl glycerate have been characterized using SAXS. Analogous to GMO cubosomes, the inverse hexagonal phase of phytanyl glycerate has been dispersed to form hexagonally facetted particles, termed hexosomes, whose structure has been verified using cryo-TEM.

We report the successful RAFT-mediated emulsion polymerization of styrene using a non-ionic surfactant (Brij98), the highly reactive 1-phenylethyl phenyldithioacetate (PEPDTA) RAFT agent, and water-soluble initiator ammonium persulfate (APS). The molar ratio of RAFT agent to APS was identical in all experiments. Most of the monomer was contained within the micelles, analogous to microemulsion or miniemulsion systems but without the need of shear, sonication, cosurfactant, or a hydrophobe. The number-average molecular weight increased with conversion and the polydispersity index was below 1.2. This ideal 'living' behavior was only found when molecular weights of 9000 and below were targeted. It was postulated that the rapid transportation of RAFT agent from the monomer swollen micelles to the growing particles was fast on the polymerization timescale, and most if not all the RAFT agent is consumed within the first 10% conversion. In addition, it was postulated that the high nucleation rate from the high rate of exit ( of the R radical from the RAFT agent) and high entry rate from water-phase radicals ( high APS concentration) reduced the effects of 'superswelling' and therefore a similar molar ratio of RAFT agent to monomer was maintained in all growing particles. The high polydispersity indexes found when targeting molecular weights greater than 9000 were postulated to be due to the lower nucleation rate from the lower weight fractions of both APS and RAFT agent. In these cases, 'superswelling' played a dominant role leading to a heterogeneous distribution of RAFT to monomer ratios among the particles nucleated at different times.
