Objectives: To investigate motor unit synchronization between medial and lateral vasti and whether such synchronization differs in closed and open chain tasks. Design: Electromyographic recordings of single motor unit action potentials were made from the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) and multiunit recordings from vastus lateralis during isometric contractions at 30 degrees of knee flexion in closed and open chain conditions. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: Five volunteers with no history of knee pain (age, 30 +/- 3.32y). Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measure: The degree of synchronization between motor unit firing was evaluated by identifying peaks in the electromyographic averages of the vastus lateralis, triggered from motor unit action potentials in the VMO, and the proportion of power in the power spectral density of the triggered average at the firing frequency of the reference motor unit. The proportion of cases in which there was significant power and peaks in the triggered averages was calculated. Results: The proportion of trials with peaks in the triggered averages of the vastus lateralis electromyographic activity was greater than 61.5% in all tasks, and there was a significantly greater proportion of cases where power in the spectrum was greater than 7.5% (P = .01) for the closed chain condition. Conclusions: There was a high proportion of synchronized motor units between the 2 muscles during isometric contractions, with evidence for greater common drive between the VMO and vastus lateralis in closed chain tasks. This has implications for rehabilitation because it suggests that closed chain tasks may generate better coordination between the vasti muscles.

This paper reexamines the stability of uncertain closed-loop systems resulting from the nonsequential (NS) MIMO QFT design methodology. By combining the effect of satisfying both the robust stability and robust performance specifications in a NS MIMO QFT design, a proof for the stability of the uncertain closed-loop system is derived. The stability theorem proves that, subject to the satisfaction of a critical necessary and sufficient condition, the original NS MIMO QFT design methodology will provide a robustly stable closed-loop system. This necessary and sufficient condition provides a useful existence test for a successful NS MIMO QFT design. The results expose the salient features of the NS MIMO QFT design methodology. Two 2 x 2 MIMO design examples are presented to illustrate the key features of the stability, theorem.

The social history of a language or variety, and its emergence, consolidation and stabiliza tion, allow us to combine the formal data of the language (principally its sound structure, grammar and lexis) with the external conditions in which they have evolved. The advance of Australian English in terms of its differentiation (Kloss's abstand) and elaboration of roles (Kloss's ausbau) pose problems of chronology, periodization, description and expla nation. This paper extends the conventional scope of abstand and ausbau to the analysis of the social history of Australian English. It argues that two factors are central to the emerging identification of Australian English: creativity, in the sense of morphological innovation, especially here in diminutives like reffo ('refugee') and pollie ('politician'); and in ludicity, defined as a deep-rooted playfulness with language. While these character istics are only part of the overall dynamics of the social history of Australian English, the evidence is sufficiently extensive to warrant further investigation. The aim was to investigate the roles of proline residues in extracellular loop 2 (P172, P183, P188 and P209) and transmembrane domains 2, 5, 11 and 12 (P108, P270, P526, P551, P552 and P570) in determining noradrenaline transporter (NET) expression and function. Mutants of human NET with these residues mutated to alanine were pharmacologically characterized. Mutation of P108, P270 and P526 disrupted cell surface expression, from [H-3]nisoxetine binding and confocal microscopy data. Mutations of P526, P551 and P570 reduced transporter turnover (V-max of [H-3]noradrenaline uptake/B-max of [H-3]nisoxetine binding) by 1.5-1.7-fold compared with wild-type NET, so these residues might be involved in conformational changes associated with substrate translocation. Conversely, mutations of P172, P183, P188 and P209 increased V-max/B-max by 2-3-fold compared with wild-type, indicating that the presence of these proline residues limits turnover of the NET. The mutations had few effects on apparent affinities of substrates or affinities of inhibitors, except decreases in inhibitor affinities after mutations of the P270 and P570 residues, and increases after mutation of the P526 residue. Hence, proline residues in extracellular loop 2 and in transmembrane domains have a range of roles in determining expression and function of the NET.

This paper re-examines the stability of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) control systems designed using sequential MIMO quantitative feedback theory (QFT). In order to establish the results, recursive design equations for the SISO equivalent plants employed in a sequential MIMO QFT design are established. The equations apply to sequential MIMO QFT designs in both the direct plant domain, which employs the elements of plant in the design, and the inverse plant domain, which employs the elements of the plant inverse in the design. Stability theorems that employ necessary and sufficient conditions for robust closed-loop internal stability are developed for sequential MIMO QFT designs in both domains. The theorems and design equations facilitate less conservative designs and improved design transparency.

In this paper, a new control design method is proposed for stable processes which can be described using Hammerstein-Wiener models. The internal model control (IMC) framework is extended to accommodate multiple IMC controllers, one for each subsystem. The concept of passive systems is used to construct the IMC controllers which approximate the inverses of the subsystems to achieve dynamic control performance. The difficulties associated with slurry transportation in autogenous (ag) and semi-autogenous (sag) grinding mills have become more apparent in recent years with the increasing trend to build larger diameter mills for grinding high tonnages. This is particularly noticeable when ag/sag mills are run in closed circuit with classifiers such as fine screens/cyclones. Extensive test work carried out on slurry removal mechanism in grate discharge mills (ag/sag) has shown that the conventional pulp lifters (radial and curved) have inherent drawbacks. They allow short-circuiting of the slurry from pulp lifters into the grinding chamber leading to slurry pool formation. Slurry pool absorbs part of the impact thus inhibiting the grinding process. Twin Chamber Pulp Lifter (TCPL) - an efficient design of pulp lifter developed by the authors overcomes the inherent drawbacks of the conventional pulp lifters. Extensive testing in both laboratory and pilot scale mills has shown that the TCPL completely blocks the flow-back process, thus allowing the mill to operate close to their design flow capacity. The TCPL performance is also found to be independent of variations in charge volume and grate design, whereas they significantly affect the performance of conventional pulp lifters (radial and curved). A vision of the future of intraoperative monitoring for anesthesia is presented-a multimodal world based on advanced sensing capabilities. I explore progress towards this vision, outlining the general nature of the anesthetist's monitoring task and the dangers of attentional capture. Research in attention indicates different kinds of attentional control, such as endogenous and exogenous orienting, which are critical to how awareness of patient state is maintained, but which may work differently across different modalities. Four kinds of medical monitoring displays are surveyed: (1) integrated visual displays, (2) head-mounted displays, (3) advanced auditory displays and (4) auditory alarms. Achievements and challenges in each area are outlined. In future research, we should focus more clearly on identifying anesthetists' information needs and we should develop models of attention in different modalities and across different modalities that are more capable of guiding design.
