Deformable models are a highly accurate and flexible approach to segmenting structures in medical images. The primary drawback of deformable models is that they are sensitive to initialisation, with accurate and robust results often requiring initialisation close to the true object in the image. Automatically obtaining a good initialisation is problematic for many structures in the body. The cartilages of the knee are a thin elastic material that cover the ends of the bone, absorbing shock and allowing smooth movement. The degeneration of these cartilages characterize the progression of osteoarthritis. The state of the art in the segmentation of the cartilage are 2D semi-automated algorithms. These algorithms require significant time and supervison by a clinical expert, so the development of an automatic segmentation algorithm for the cartilages is an important clinical goal. In this paper we present an approach towards this goal that allows us to automatically providing a good initialisation for deformable models of the patella cartilage, by utilising the strong spatial relationship of the cartilage to the underlying bone.

The subject of management is renowned for its addiction to fads and fashions. Project Management is no exception. The issue of interest for this paper is the establishment of the 'College of Complex Project Managers' and their 'competency standard for complex project managers.' Both have generated significant interest in the Project Management community, and like any other human endeavour they should be subject to critical evaluation. The results of this evaluation show significant flaws in the definition of complex in this case, the process by which the College and its standard have emerged, and the content of the standard. However, there is a significant case for a portfolio of research that extends the existing bodies of knowledge into large-scale complicated (or major) projects that would be owned by the relevant practitioner communities, rather than focused on one organization. Research questions are proposed that would commence this stream of activity towards an intelligent synthesis of what is required to manage in both complicated and truly complex environments.

The task of segmenting cell nuclei from cytoplasm in conventional Papanicolaou (Pap) stained cervical cell images is a classical image analysis problem which may prove to be crucial to the development of successful systems which automate the analysis of Pap smears for detection of cancer of the cervix. Although simple thresholding techniques will extract the nucleus in some cases, accurate unsupervised segmentation of very large image databases is elusive. Conventional active contour models as introduced by Kass, Witkin and Terzopoulos (1988) offer a number of advantages in this application, but suffer from the well-known drawbacks of initialisation and minimisation. Here we show that a Viterbi search-based dual active contour algorithm is able to overcome many of these problems and achieve over 99% accurate segmentation on a database of 20 130 Pap stained cell images. This study provided information about how individual workers perceive, describe and interpret episodes of problematic communication. Sixteen full-time workers (5 males, 11 females) were interviewed in depth about specific incidents of problematic communication within their workplace. Their descriptions of the attributed causes of the incidents were coded using a categorisation scheme developed from Coupland, Wieman, and Giles' (1991) model of sources of problematic communication. Communication problems were most commonly attributed to individual deficiency and group membership, although there were differences depending on the direction of communication. The most negative attributions (to personality flaws, to lack of skills, and to negative stereotypes of the outgroup) were most commonly applied by individuals to their supervisors, whilst attributions applied to co-workers and subordinates tended to be less negative, or even positive in some instances (where individuals attributed the fault to themselves). Overall, results highlighted distinctions between the perceptions of communication problems with supervisors and with subordinates, and are interpreted with reference to social identity theory.

This article examines Simpson's paradox as applied to the theory of probabilites and percentages. The author discusses possible flaws in the paradox and compares it to the Sure Thing Principle, statistical inference, causal inference and probabilistic analyses of causation.

Despite apparent overwhelming benefits, implementation of the Household Responsibility System (HRS) in China contained a number of flaws. The Two-Farmland System (TFS), which originated in Pingdu City in Shandong Province, sought to address the twin problems of land fragmentation and economies of size. A stochastic frontier production function analysis that isolates the impacts of land allocation reforms suggests that the TFS increased efficiency by around 7%. This article highlights the need for empirical analysis to assess objectively the merits or otherwise of particular reforms. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

Recursive filters are widely used in image analysis due to their efficiency and simple implementation. However these filters have an initialisation problem which either produces unusable results near the image boundaries or requires costly approximate solutions such as extending the boundary manually. In this paper, we describe a method for the recursive filtering of symmetrically extended images for filters with symmetric denominator. We begin with an analysis of symmetric extensions and their effect on non-recursive filtering operators. Based on the non-recursive case, we derive a formulation of recursive filtering on symmetric domains as a linear but spatially varying implicit operator. We then give an efficient method for decomposing and solving the linear implicit system, along with a proof that this decomposition always exists. This decomposition needs to be performed only once for each dimension of the image. This yields a filtering which is both stable and consistent with the ideal infinite extension. The filter is efficient, requiring less computation than the standard recursive filtering. We give experimental evidence to verify these claims. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the creation of 3D statistical shape models of the knee bones and their use to embed information into a segmentation system for MRIs of the knee. We propose utilising the strong spatial relationship between the cartilages and the bones in the knee by embedding this information into the created models. This information can then be used to automate the initialisation of segmentation algorithms for the cartilages. The approach used to automatically generate the 3D statistical shape models of the bones is based on the point distribution model optimisation framework of Davies. Our implementation of this scheme uses a parameterized surface extraction algorithm, which is used as the basis for the optimisation scheme that automatically creates the 3D statistical shape models. The current approach is illustrated by generating 3D statistical shape models of the patella, tibia and femoral bones from a segmented database of the knee. The use of these models to embed spatial relationship information to aid in the automation of segmentation algorithms for the cartilages is then illustrated.
