Five rates (0, 28.0, 65.4, 83.7 and 111.7 mm) of dairy effluent were applied through irrigation to tropical grass pasture during the wet season on the Atherton Tablelands in the Far North of Queensland, Australia. Irrigation water was applied to the treatments in inverse proportion to the effluent for equivalent total water application. Pastures were harvested on a three weekly basis, dry matter yield determined and sub samples analysed for N concentration (%), and Nitrogen yield (kg ha-1) calculated. Lysimeters installed in the high effluent treatment and the no effluent treatment measured leachate volume to 50 cm. Samples of leachate were analysed for nitrogen concentration and loss below 50 cm calculated. There was no significant difference in pasture yield and nitrogen yield among treatments. Loss of nitrogen through leachate was substantial in both the high effluent treatment and the zero effluent treatment.

T he aim of this study was to determine whether identity-by-descent (IBD) information for affected sib pairs (ASPs) can be used to select a sample of cases for a genetic case-control study which will provide more power for detecting association with loci in a known linkage region. By modeling the expected frequency of the disease allele in ASPs showing IBD sharing of 0, 1, or 2 alleles, and considering additive, recessive, and dominant disease models, we show that cases selected from IBD 2 families are best for this purpose, followed by those selected from IBD 1 families; least useful are cases selected from IBD 0 families.

The present study aimed to evaluate the role of social support and self-efficacy on the level of stress associated with the transition from high school to university. One hundred and eight-five university students who had completed high school in the previous year completed a three-part questionnaire designed to gather information on their levels of self-efficacy, social support, and stress associated with their transition. The results showed that self-efficacy was a significant predictor of stress associated with the transition to university in that higher levels of self-efficacy were associated with lower levels of stress while social support was a non-significant predictor of stress. Enzyme products did not have a significant effect (P>0.05) on weekly fed intake and weight gain of birds. But feed intake tended to drop and weight gain tended to increase in response to supplementation of the three enzymes. Weight gain of the birds was increased by 0.6% with lipase, 3.7% with phytase and 2.4% with xylanase. Xylanase had a marked effect (P

Modifications at the N-terminus of the rabbit CYP4B1 gene resulted in expression levels in Escherichia coli of up to 660 nmol/L. Solubilization of the enzyme from bacterial membranes led to substantial conversion to cytochrome P420 unless alpha-naphthoflavone was added as a stabilizing ligand. Mass spectrometry analysis and Edman sequencing of purified enzyme preparations revealed differential N-terminal post-translational processing of the various constructs expressed. Notably, bacterial expression of CYP4B1 produced a holoenzyme with >98.5% of its heme prosthetic group covalently linked to the protein backbone. The near fully covalently linked hernoproteins exhibited similar rates and regioselectivities of lauric acid hydroxylation to that observed previously for the partially heme processed enzyme expressed in insect cells. These studies shed new light on the consequences of covalent heme processing in CYP4B1 and provide a facile system for future mechanistic and structural studies with the enzyme. 1. The often complex architecture of coral reefs forms a diversity of light microhabitats. Analogous to patterns in forest plants, light variation may drive strategies for efficient light utilization and metabolism in corals. 2. We investigated the spatial distribution of light regimes in a spur-and-groove reef environment and examine the photophysiology of the coral Montipora monasteriata (Forskal 1775), a species with a wide habitat distribution. Specifically, we examined the variation in tissue and skeletal thickness, and photosynthetic and metabolic responses among contrasting light microhabitats. 3. Daily irradiances reaching corals in caves and under overhangs were 1-5 and 30-40% of those in open habitats at similar depth (3-5 m), respectively. Daily rates of net photosynthesis of corals in cave habitats approximated zero, suggesting more than two orders of magnitude variation in scope for growth across habitats. 4. Three mechanisms of photoadaptation or acclimation were observed in cave and overhang habitats: (1) a 20-50% thinner tissue layer and 40-60% thinner skeletal plates, maximizing light interception per unit mass; (2) a two- to threefold higher photosynthetic efficiency per unit biomass; and (3) low rates of dark respiration. 5. Specimens from open and cave habitats displayed a high capacity to acclimate to downshifts or upshifts in irradiance, respectively. However, specimens in caves displayed limited acclimation to further irradiance reduction, indicating that these live near their irradiance limit. 6. Analogous to patterns for some plant species in forest gaps, the morphological plasticity and physiological flexibility of M. monasteriata enable it to occupy light habitats that vary by more than two orders of magnitude.

The fluorescence of single molecules coupled to a thermal bath is studied both experimentally and theoretically. The effect of different fluctuations on the coherence properties of resonance fluorescence is considered first. Coherence is measured in an interference experiment where a single molecule is used as a light source. A standard approach based on the optical Bloch equations apparently provides quite an accurate description of the interference experiment. Systems with long correlation times (where spectra are time dependent on any timescale) are considered next. It is shown that intensity-time-frequency correlation spectroscopy, which provides both high signal-to-noise ratio and high time resolution, is very suitable for such a case. The Bloch equations are further tested in an experiment where the shape of an excitation spectral line of a single molecule is accurately measured over six orders of magnitude of the exciting laser power. Significant deviations from the predictions of the Bloch equations are found. The role of critical parameters-the correlation time of the bath, the Rabi oscillation period, and the coupling constant between the bath and the molecule-is discussed. The paper also includes a short general introduction to the methodology of single-molecule studies.

The growth performance and endocrine responses of male weaner pigs (3 to 8 weeks of age) was evaluated in two different environments (clean and dirty) and housing (single or groups of 10 pigs/pen) conditions. The dirty environment contained significantly elevated ammonia, carbon dioxide and dust levels compared with the clean environment. Pigs grew faster and consumed more feed in the clean environment and this was associated with reduced plasma cortisol concentrations compared with pigs in the dirty environment. Pigs housed in groups in the dirty environment had increased β-endorphin and decreased IGF-I concentrations compared to group housed pigs in the clean environment. Feed conversion efficiency did not differ due to environment or group housing. Plasma concentration of cortisol, p-endorphin, IGF-I and IGF-II did not differ between single and group housed pigs. Activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis was greater in response to environmental conditions than group housing, and this was associated with reduced growth in weaner pigs. © 2004 Elsevier B.V.
