The design, development, and testing of an X-band 137-element passive reflect away capable of incorporating active devices such as transistor amplifiers is presented. In order to avoid grating lobes in the radiation pattern, the interelement spacing is minimized using dual-feed aperture-coupled patch antenna elements. Far-field radiation pattern results are presented and compared with the predicted radiation patterns. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Multipole expansion of an incident radiation field-that is, representation of the fields as sums of vector spherical wavefunctions-is essential for theoretical light scattering methods such as the T-matrix method and generalised Lorenz-Mie theory (GLMT). In general, it is theoretically straightforward to find a vector spherical wavefunction representation of an arbitrary radiation field. For example, a simple formula results in the useful case of an incident plane wave. Laser beams present some difficulties. These problems are not a result of any deficiency in the basic process of spherical wavefunction expansion, but are due to the fact that laser beams, in their standard representations, are not radiation fields, but only approximations of radiation fields. This results from the standard laser beam representations being solutions to the paraxial scalar wave equation. We present an efficient method for determining the multipole representation of an arbitrary focussed beam. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a novel design procedure for designing a compact UWB antipodal Vivaldi antenna is presented. The antenna operates over the UWB frequency, band from 3.1 to more than 10.6 GHz. Its measured far-field radiation is directive and its peak gain is 10.2 dBi in the specified band. The antenna pulse response shows negligible distortion, indicating that it can be useful in a precision ranging and imaging instrumentation. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Adopting a social identity perspective, the research was designed to examine the interplay between premerger group status and integration pattern in the prediction of responses to a merger. The research employed a 2 (status: high versus low) x 3 (integration pattern: assimilation versus integrational equality versus transformation) between-participants factorial design. We predicted that integration pattern and group status would interact such that the responses of the members of high status group would be most positive under conditions of an assimilation pattern, whereas members of low status groups were expected to favour an integration-equality pattern. After working on a task in small groups, group status was manipulated and the groups worked on a second task. The merger was then announced and the integration pattern was manipulated (e.g., in terms of the logo, location, and decision rules). The main dependent variables were assessed after the merged groups had worked together on a third task. As expected, there was evidence that the effects of group status on responses to the merger were moderated by integration pattern. Field data also indicated that both premerger status and perceived integration pattern influenced employee responses to an organisational merger.

A new method is presented here for the systematic design of biplanar shielded shim and gradient coils, for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other applications. The desired target field interior to the coil is specified in advance, and a winding pattern is then designed to produce a field that matches the target as closely as possible. Both gradient and shim coils can be designed by this approach, and the target region can be located asymmetrically within the coil. The interior target field may be matched at two or more interior locations, to improve accuracy. When shields are present, the winding patterns are designed so that the fields exterior to the biplanar coil are made as small as possible. The method is illustrated here by the design of some transverse gradient and shim coils.

The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area in Far North Queens- land, Australia consists predominantly of tropical rainforest and wet sclerophyll forest in areas of variable relief. Previous maps of vegetation communities in the area were produced by a labor-intensive combination of field survey and air-photo interpretation. Thus,. the aim of this work was to develop a new vegetation mapping method based on imaging radar that incorporates topographical corrections, which could be repeated frequently, and which would reduce the need for detailed field assessments and associated costs. The method employed G topographic correction and mapping procedure that was developed to enable vegetation structural classes to be mapped from satellite imaging radar. Eight JERS-1 scenes covering the Wet Tropics area for 1996 were acquired from NASDA under the auspices of the Global Rainforest Mapping Project. JERS scenes were geometrically corrected for topographic distortion using an 80 m DEM and a combination of polynomial warping and radar viewing geometry modeling. An image mosaic was created to cover the Wet Tropics region, and a new technique for image smoothing was applied to the JERS texture bonds and DEM before a Maximum Likelihood classification was applied to identify major land-cover and vegetation communities. Despite these efforts, dominant vegetation community classes could only be classified to low levels of accuracy (57.5 percent) which were partly explained by the significantly larger pixel size of the DEM in comparison to the JERS image (12.5 m). In addition, the spatial and floristic detail contained in the classes of the original validation maps were much finer than the JERS classification product was able to distinguish. In comparison to field and aerial photo-based approaches for mapping the vegetation of the Wet Tropics, appropriately corrected SAR data provides a more regional scale, all-weather mapping technique for broader vegetation classes. Further work is required to establish an appropriate combination of imaging radar with elevation data and other environmental surrogates to accurately map vegetation communities across the entire Wet Tropics.

Time-harmonic methods are required in the accurate design of RF coils as operating frequency increases. This paper presents such a method to find a current density solution on the coil that will induce some desired magnetic field upon an asymmetrically located target region within. This inverse method appropriately considers the geometry of the coil via a Fourier series expansion, and incorporates some new regularization penalty functions in the solution process. A new technique is introduced by which the complex, time-dependent current density solution is approximated by a static coil winding pattern. Several winding pattern solutions are given, with more complex winding patterns corresponding to more desirable induced magnetic fields.
