Peroperative hypothermia is recognized to increase mortality and morbidity, and the paediatric anaesthetist faces specific challenges resulting from the increased body surface to volume ratio, particularly in smaller children. We describe three children who were consecutive patients on one operating list and sustained severe thermal injuries. These were due to a malfunctioning electrical heating mat, despite appropriate use and monitoring by the attending anaesthetist. It is rare for thermal warming devices to cause injury. We review the use of heating mats, and suggest modifications in their manufacture which may minimize the risks associated with heating devices.

A phased-array antenna with switched-beam elements used to combat interference in an indoor wireless communication system is described. The array uses I-bit phase shifters applied to its elements in order to point its main beam in a desired direction and internal switching of elements in order to form nulls towards interference. The array's capability of suppressing interference is verified by studying its radiation patterns and by performing interference-rejection experiments in an indoor multipath environment. The design, development, and testing of an X-band 137-element passive reflect away capable of incorporating active devices such as transistor amplifiers is presented. In order to avoid grating lobes in the radiation pattern, the interelement spacing is minimized using dual-feed aperture-coupled patch antenna elements. Far-field radiation pattern results are presented and compared with the predicted radiation patterns. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
