Durante las últimas tres décadas el interés y diversidad en el uso de canales escalonados han aumentado debido al desarrollo de nuevas técnicas y materiales que permiten su construcción de manera rápida y económica (Concreto compactado con rodillo CCR, Gaviones, etc.). Actualmente, los canales escalonados se usan como vertedores y/o canales para peces en presas y diques, como disipadores de energía en canales y ríos, o como aireadores en plantas de tratamiento y torrentes contaminados. Diversos investigadores han estudiado el flujo en vertedores escalonados, enfocándose en estructuras de gran pendiente (  45o) por lo que a la fecha, el comportamiento del flujo sobre vertedores con pendientes moderadas (  15 a 30o) no ha sido totalmente comprendido. El presente artículo comprende un estudio experimental de las propiedades físicas del flujo aire-agua sobre canales escalonados con pendientes moderadas, típicas en presas de materiales sueltos. Un extenso rango de gastos en condiciones de flujo rasante se investigó en dos modelos experimentales a gran escala (Le = 3 a 6): Un canal con pendiente 3.5H:1V (  16o) y dos alturas de escalón distintas (h = 0.1 y 0.05 m) y un canal con pendiente 2.5H:1V (  22o) y una altura de escalón de h = 0.1 m. Los resultados incluyen un análisis detallado de las propiedades del flujo en vertedores escalonados con pendientes moderadas y un nuevo criterio de diseño hidráulico, el cual está basado en los resultados experimentales obtenidos. English abstract: Stepped chutes have been used as hydraulic structures since antiquity, they can be found acting as spillways and fish ladders in dams and weirs, as energy dissipators in artificial channels, gutters and rivers, and as aeration enhancers in water treatment plants and polluted streams. In recent years, new construction techniques and materials (Roller Compacted Concrete RCC, rip-rap gabions, etc.) together with the development of the abovementioned new applications have allowed cheaper construction methods, increasing the interest in stepped chute design. During the last three decades, research in stepped spillways has been very active. However, studies prior to 1993 neglected the effect of free-surface aeration. A number of studies have focused since on steep stepped chutes (  45o) but the hydraulic performance of moderate-slope stepped channels is not yet totally understood. This study details an experimental investigation of physical air-water flow properties down moderate slope stepped spillways conducted in two laboratory models: the first model was a 3.15 m long stepped chute with a 15.9o slope comprising two interchangeable step heights (h = 0.1 m and h = 0.05 m); the second model was a 3.3 m long, stepped channel with a 21.8o slope (h = 0.1 m). A broad range of discharges within transition and skimming flow regimes was investigated. Measurements were conducted using a double tip conductivity probe. The study provides new, original insights into air-water stepped chute flows not foreseen in prior studies and presents a new design criterion for chutes with moderate slopes based on the experimental results.

The solution structure of robustoxin, the lethal neurotoxin from the Sydney funnel-web spider Atrax robustus, has been determined from 2D H-1 NMR data, Robustoxin is a polypeptide of 42 residues cross-linked by four disulphide bonds, the connectivities of which were determined from NMR data and trial structure calculations to be 1-15, 8-20, 14-31 and 16-42 (a 1-4/2-6/3-7/5-8 pattern), The structure consists of a small three-stranded, anti-parallel beta-sheet and a series of interlocking gamma-turns at the C-terminus. It also contains a cystine knot, thus placing it in the inhibitor cystine knot motif family of structures, which includes the omega-conotoxins and a number of plant and animal toxins and protease inhibitors. Robustoxin contains three distinct charged patches on its surface, and an extended loop that includes several aromatic and non-polar residues, Both of these structural features may play a role in its binding to the voltage-gated sodium channel. Spatial data has now been used extensively in the Web environment, providing online customized maps and supporting map-based applications. The full potential of Web-based spatial applications, however, has yet to be achieved due to performance issues related to the large sizes and high complexity of spatial data. In this paper, we introduce a multiresolution approach to spatial data management and query processing such that the database server can choose spatial data at the right resolution level for different Web applications. One highly desirable property of the proposed approach is that the server-side processing cost and network traffic can be reduced when the level of resolution required by applications are low. Another advantage is that our approach pushes complex multiresolution structures and algorithms into the spatial database engine. That is, the developer of spatial Web applications needs not to be concerned with such complexity. This paper explains the basic idea, technical feasibility and applications of multiresolution spatial databases.

Obesity affects aspects of glucose homeostasis such as insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity. Hormones secreted by adipocytes like leptin mediate the metabolic consequences of obesity. Incretin hormones like glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) increase insulin secretion in response to changes in blood glucose concentration and have been proposed to regulate insulin secretion in fasting, overweight dogs. The aim of this study was to examine hormonal mechanisms by which adiposity alters glucose homeostasis, plasma insulin concentration, and insulin sensitivity in spontaneously overweight dogs.

A family of potent insecticidal toxins has recently been isolated from the venom of Australian funnel web spiders. Among these is the 37-residue peptide omega-atracotoxin-HV1 (omega-ACTX-HV1) from Hadronyche versuta. We have chemically synthesized and folded omega-ACTX-HV1, shown that it is neurotoxic, ascertained its disulphide bonding pattern, and determined its three-dimensional solution structure using NMR spectroscopy. The structure consists of a solvent-accessible beta-hairpin protruding from a disulphide-bonded globular core comprising four beta-turns. The three intramolecular disulphide bonds form a cystine knot motif similar to that seen in several other neurotoxic peptides. Despite limited sequence identity, omega-ACTX-HV1 displays significant structural homology with the omega-agatoxins and omega-conotoxins, both of which are vertebrate calcium channel antagonists; however, in contrast with these toxins, we show that omega-ACTX-HV1 inhibits insect, but not mammalian, voltage-gated calcium channel currents.

To support student learning in a large Metabolism and Nutrition class, we have introduced a web-based package, using a commercially available program, WebCT. The package was developed at a minimal cost and with limited resources. In addition to downloadable (PDF) versions of lecture Powerpoint presentations, tutorial outlines and a practical class exercise, web-based self-directed learning exercises were included to reinforce and extend lecture material in an active learning environment. The web-site also contained a variety of formative and summative assessment tasks that examined both factual recall and higher order thinking Detailed course information, timetables and a bulletin board were also readily accessible. Student usage of the site was generally high, but varied widely between individual students. Students who achieved a high overall score for the course completed on average three times as many formative assessment items and achieved a higher score for all tests than students who did poorly. Student feedback about the site was very positive with the majority of students reporting that the course material and assessment items that were available were useful to their learning. Industry professionals of the near future will be supported by an IT infrastructure that enables them to complete a task by drawing on resources and people with expertise anywhere in the world, and access to knowledge through specific training programs that address the task requirements. The increasing uptake of new technologies enables information to reach a diverse population and to provide flexible learning environments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This paper examines one of the key areas where the World Wide Web will impact on the water and wastewater industries, namely technology transfer and training. The authors will present their experiences of developing online training courses for wastewater industry professionals over the last two years. The perspective is that of two people working at the coalface.
