The infrapatellar fat pad has been implicated as a possible source of anterior knee pain. This study examined the nature, distribution and time-course of experimentally induced pain in the infrapatellar fat pad. Hypertonic saline (5%) was injected into the medial fat pad of 11 healthy individuals with no history of knee pain. Severity of pain was assessed at rest and during activity using an 11 point numerical rating scale (NRS) at regular intervals over 15-30 min following injection. Participants described the size of the pain region from a series of different sized circles while the area and type of pain was established from a body chart and the McGill pain questionnaire. The effect of pain on temperature-pain threshold and sensory thresholds of the anterior knee was assessed. Participants generally reported a deep aching pain that peaked in severity around 3 min and gradually declined over 15 min. Pain levels were not altered by clinical manoeuvres designed to impinge the fat pad. The size of the pain region was related to pain intensity. Pain was most commonly felt in the region of the fat pad medial to the patella, although some individuals reported proximal referred pain as far as the groin region. Thermal and sensory thresholds were not altered at a region close to the injection site during the experimental pain. These results suggest that nociceptive stimulation of the infrapatellar fat pad may cause anterior knee pain that is not necessarily confined locally particularly if pain is severe. This has implications for the investigation of pathological structures in patients presenting clinically with anterior knee pain and provides an experimental model of anterior knee pain. Let T be a partial latin square and L be a latin square with T subset of L. We say that T is a latin trade if there exists a partial latin square T' with T' boolean AND T = theta such that (LT) U T' is a latin square. A k-homogeneous latin trade is one which intersects each row, each column and each entry either 0 or k times. In this paper, we construct 3-homogeneous latin trades from hexagonal packings of the plane with circles. We show that 3-homogeneous latin trades of size 3 m exist for each m >= 3. This paper discusses existence results for latin trades and provides a glueing construction which is subsequently used to construct all latin trades of finite order greater than three. Many Australian grain growers need to change their management approach to ensure their continued viability, but do not have the required knowledge and skills. Uptake of relevant education and training is poor, despite the positive correlation between learning, change and farm viability. As men are generally occupied with the operational aspects of the farm, much of the management role has been taken on by their partners, despite their lack of relevant formal qualifications. Professional development of farm partners therefore has the potential to improve the viability of grain growers. A model combining learning circles and action learning projects is proposed.

Both the New Zealand Ministry of Education's Literacy Experts Group and the Australian National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy have recently acknowledged the centrality of systematic instruction in synthetic phonics to early reading instruction, but this conclusion remains contentious in some circles. This paper briefly summarises empirical research in basic psychology and evidence-based evaluation studies supporting the inclusion of systematic synthetic phonics instruction within the early reading curriculum, allowing practising psychologists to develop an informed opinion on this issue.

In this paper, we examine the problem of fitting a hypersphere to a set of noisy measurements of points on its surface. Our work generalises an estimator of Delogne (Proc. IMEKO-Symp. Microwave Measurements 1972,117-123) which he proposed for circles and which has been shown by Kasa (IEEE Trans. Instrum. Meas. 25, 1976, 8-14) to be convenient for its ease of analysis and computation. We also generalise Chan's 'circular functional relationship' to describe the distribution of points. We derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) under this model and we derive approximations for the mean and variance for fixed sample sizes when the noise variance is small. We perform a statistical analysis of the estimate of the hypersphere's centre. We examine the existence of the mean and variance of the estimator for fixed sample sizes. We find that the mean exists when the number of sample points is greater than M + 1, where M is the dimension of the hypersphere. The variance exists when the number of sample points is greater than M + 2. We find that the bias approaches zero as the noise variance diminishes and that the variance approaches the CRLB. We provide simulation results to support our findings.
