Fly ash was modified by hydrothermal treatment using NaOH solutions under various conditions for zeolite synthesis. The XRD patterns are presented. The results indicated that the samples obtained after treatment are much different. The XRD profiles revealed a number of new reflexes, suggesting a phase transformation probably occurred. Both heat treatment and chemical treatment increased the surface area and pore volume. It was found that zeolite P would be formed at the conditions of higher NaOH concentration and temperature. The treated fly ash was tested for adsorption of heavy metal ions and dyes in aqueous solution. It was shown that fly ash and the modified forms could effectively absorb heavy metals and methylene blue but not effectively adsorb rhodamine B. Modifying fly ash with NaOH solution would significantly enhance the adsorption capacity depending on the treatment temperature, time, and base concentration. The adsorption capacity of methylene blue would increases with pH of the dye solution and the sorption capacity of FA-NaOH could reach 5 x 10(-5) mol/g. The adsorption isotherm could be described by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations. Removal of copper and nickel ions could also be achieved on those treated fly ash. The removal efficiency for copper and nickel ions could be from 30% to 90% depending on the initial concentrations. The increase in adsorption temperature will enhance the adsorption efficiency for both heavy metals. The pseudo second-order kinetics would be better for fitting the dynamic adsorption of Cu and Ni ions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We review progress on laser cooling of solids. The general process that enables cooling to occur is based on anti-Stokes fluorescence. Candidate materials for laser cooling are discussed, including gases, dyes, crystals, semiconductors, and ionically doped glasses. Cooling processes and necessary conditions for cooling are outlined, and general thermodynamic limitations are discussed. This is followed by a more detailed discussion of one specific material, ytterbium-doped ZBLAN, with consideration given to optimization of the laser cooling process and applications. Transporters of Ca2+ are potential drug targets and Ca2+ is a useful signal in the assessment of G-protein-coupled receptor activation. Assays involving the assessment of intracellular Ca2+ using microplate readers most often use Ca2+ indicators which do not exhibit a spectra shift on Ca2+ binding (e.g. fluo-3). Indicators that do exhibit a spectral shift upon Ca2+ binding (e.g. fura-2) offer potential advantages for the calibration of intracellular Ca2+ levels. However, experimental limitations may limit the use of ratiometric dyes in microplate readers capable of screening. In this study, we compared the assessment of intracellular Ca2+ in adherent breast cancer cells using ratiometric and nonratiometric Ca2+ indicators. Our results demonstrate that both fluo-3 and fura-2 detect ATP dose-dependent increases in intracellular Ca2+ in the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line and that some of the limitations in the use of fura-2 appear to be overcome by the use of glass bottom microplates. The calibrated intracellular Ca2+ levels derived using fura-2 are consistent with those from microscopy and cuvette-based studies. Fura-2 may be useful in microplate studies, where cell lines with different properties are compared or where screening treatments lead to differences in the number of cells or dye loading. A comparison has been made between the spectroscopic properties of the laser dye rhodamine 6G (R6G) in mesostructured titanium dioxide (TiO2) and in ethanol. Steady-state excitation and emission techniques have been used to probe the dye-matrix interactions. We show that the TiO2-nanocomposite studied is a good host for R6G, as it allows high dye concentrations, while keeping dye molecules isolated, and preventing aggregation. Our findings have important implications in the context of solid state dye-lasers and microphotonic device applications. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
