This paper describes a spatial beamformer which by using a rectangular array antenna steers a beam in azimuth over a wide frequency band without frequency filters or tap-delay networks. The weighting coefficients are real numbers which can be realized by attenuators or amplifiers. A prototype including a 4 x 4 array of square planar monopoles and a feeding network composed of attenuators, power divider/combiners and a rat-race hybrid is developed to test the validity of this wide-band beamforming concept. The experimental results prove the validity of this wide-band spatial beamformer for small size arrays.

This article reports a study of the effects of synthesis parameters on the preparation and formation of mesoporous titania nanopowders by employing a two-step sol-gel method. These materials displayed crystalline domains characteristic of anatase. The first step of the process involved the hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide in a basic aqueous solution mediated by neutral surfactant. The solid product obtained from step 1 was then treated in an acidified ethanol solution containing the same titanium precursor to thicken the pore walls. Low pH and higher loading of the Ti precursor in step 2 produced better mesoporosity and crystallinity of titanium dioxide polymorphs. The resultant powder exhibited a high surface area (73.8 m(2)/g) and large pore volume (0.17 cm(3)/g) with uniform mesopores. These materials are envisaged to be used as precursors for mesoporous titania films as a wide band gap semiconductor in dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells.

This article presents an array antenna with beam-steering capability in azimuth over a wide frequency band using real-valued weighting coefficients that can be realized in practice by amplifiers or attenuators. The described beamforming scheme relies on a 2D (instead of 1D) array structure in order to make sure that there are enough degrees of freedom to realize a given radiation pattern in both the angular and frequency domains. In the presented approach, weights are determined using an inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) technique by neglecting the mutual coupling between array elements. Because of the presence of mutual coupling, the actual array produces a radiation pattern with increased side-lobe levels. In order to counter this effect, the design aims to realize the initial radiation pattern with a lower side-lobe level. This strategy is demonstrated in the design example of 4 X 4 element array. A finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is applied to investigate capabilities of an ultra-wide band (UWB) radar system to detect a breast tumor. The first part of the investigations concerns FDTD simulations of a phantom formed by a plastic container with liquid and a small reflecting target. The second part focuses on a three-dimensional numerical breast model with a small tumor. FDTD simulations are carried out assuming a planar incident wave. Various time snap shots of the electromagnetic field are recorded to learn about the physical phenomenon of reflection and scattering in different layers of the phantom.
