An experimental study on the ternary system PbO-ZnO-SiO2, in air by high-temperature equilibration and quenching techniques followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis was carried out as part of the wider research program on the six-component system PbO-ZnO-SiO2-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3, which combines experimental and thermodynamic computer modeling techniques to characterize zinc and lead industrial slags. Liquidus and solidus data were reported for all primary phase fields in the system PbO-ZnO-SiO2 in the temperature range 640 degrees C to 1400 degrees C (913 to 1673 K).

This research is part of a project whose scope was to investigate the engineering properties of new non-commercial alloy formulations based on the Cu rich corner of the Cu-Fe-Cr ternary system with the primary aim of exploring the development of a new cost-effective high-strength, high-conductivity copper alloy. The literature indicated that Cu rich Cu-Cr and Cu-Fe alloys have been thoroughly investigated. A number of commercial alloys have been developed and these are used for a variety of applications requiring combinations of high-strength, high-conductivity and resistance to softening. Little evidence was found in the literature that the Cu rich corner of the Cu-Fe-Cr system had previously been investigated for the purpose of developing high-strength, high-conductivity copper alloys resistant to softening. The aim of these present investigations was to explore the possibility that new alloys could be developed that combined the properties of both sets of alloys, ie large precipitation hardening response combined with the ability to stabilise cold worked microstructures to high temperatures while at the same maintain high electrical conductivity. To assess the feasibility of this goal the following alloys were chosen for investigation: Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe, Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.8wt%Fe, Cu-0.7wt%Cr-2.0wt%Fe. This paper reports on the mechanical property investigation which indicated that the Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe, and Cu-0.7wt%Cr-2.0wt%Fe alloys were worthy of further investigation. Promising properties have been measured for the following alloys: Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe and Cu-0.7wt%Cr-2.0wt%Fe. This paper reports on the microstructural characterisation of these alloys and discusses the mechanical and electrical properties of these alloys in terms of their microstructure, particularly the formation of precipitates. These alloys have evinced properties that warrant further investigation. Cost modelling has shown that Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe is approximately 25% cheaper to produce than commercial Cu-1%Cr. It has also been shown to be more cost efficient on a yield stress and % IACS per dollar basis. The reason for the cost saving is that the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe alloy can be made with low carbon ferro-chrome additions as the source of chromium rather than the more expensive Cu-Cr master-alloy. For applications in which cost is one of the primary materials selection criteria, it is envisaged that there would be numerous applications in both cast and wrought form, where the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe alloy would be more suitable than Cu-1%Cr. The aim of the present work was to increase the electrical conductivity and strength of the Cu-0.7wt%Cr-0.3wt%Fe alloy through selective minor additions (less than or equal to0.15 wt%) of elements expected to promote precipitation of dissolved Fe: Ti, B, P, Ni & Y. Such quaternary alloys with reduced Fe in solid solution would be expected to have properties equivalent to or better than those of the Cu-1%Cr reference alloy (Alloy Z). The investigation showed that none of the trace element additions significantly improved the size of the age hardening response or the peak aged electrical conductivity of Alloy A, although further work is required on the influence of Ti. Additions of P and B were detrimental. Other trace additions had little or no effect apart from causing some slight changes to the precipitation kinetics. The mechanical properties of the Cu-0.7%Cr-0.3%Fe alloy made with less expensive high carbon ferrochrome were found to be inferior to those of the equivalent alloy made with low carbon ferrochrome. Equilibrium phase relations in the PbO-Al2O3-SiO2 system have been investigated experimentally by means of high-temperature equilibration, quenching, and electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). The system has 21 primary phase fields including three monoxides (PbO, Al2O3, and SiO2), seven binary compounds (Al6Si2O13, PbAl2O4, PbAl12O19, Pb2Al2O5, PbSiO3, Pb2SiO4, and Pb4SiO6), and eleven ternary compounds (PbAl2Si2O8, Pb3Al10SiO20, Pb4Al2Si2O11, Pb4Al4SiO12, Pb4Al4Si3O16, Pb4Al4Si5O20, Pb5Al2Si10O28, Pb6Al2Si6O21, Pb8Al2Si4O19, Pb12Al2Si17O49, and Pb12Al2Si20O55). Three new ternary compounds, Pb4Al4SiO12, Pb4Al4Si5O20, and Pb12Al2Si17O49, were observed and characterized by EPMA. No extensive solid solution in any of the compounds was found in the present study. The liquidus isotherms were experimentally determined in most of the primary phase fields in the temperature range from 923 to 1873 K, and the ternary phase diagram of the PbO-Al2O3-SiO2 System has been constructed.

The mechanism underlying segregation in liquid fluidized beds is investigated in this paper, A binary fluidized bed system not at a stable equilibrium condition. is modelled in the literature as forming a mixed part-corresponding to stable mixture-at the bottom of the bed and a pure layer of excess components always floating on the mixed part. On the basis of this model: (0 comprehensive criteria for binary particles of any type to mix/segregate, and (ii) mixing, segregation regime map in terms of size ratio and density ratio of the particles for a given fluidizing medium, are established in this work. Therefore, knowing the properties of given particles, a second type of particles can be chosen in order to avoid or to promote segregation according to the particular process requirements. The model is then advanced for multicomponent fluidized beds and validated against experimental results observed for ternary fluidized beds. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The phase equilibria in the Fe-Mg-Zn-O system in the temperature range 1100-1550degreesC in air have been experimentally studied using equilibration and quenching followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The compositions of condensed phases in equilibrium in the binary MgO-ZnO system and the ternary Fe-Mg-O system have been reported at sub-solidus in air. Pseudo-ternary sections of the quaternary Fe-Mg-Zn-O system at 1100, 1250 and 1400degreesC in air were constructed using the experimental data. The solid solution of iron oxide, MgO and ZnO in the periclase (Mg, Zn, Fe)O, spinel (Mg2+, Fe2+, Zn2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 and zincite (Zn, Mg, Fe)O phases were found to be extensive under the conditions investigated. A continuous spinel solid solution is formed between the magnesioferrite (Mg2+, Fe2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 and franklinite (Zn2+, Fe2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 end-members at 1100 and 1250degreesC, extending to magnetite (Fe2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 at 1400degreesC in air. The compositions along the spinel boundaries were found to be non-stoichiometric, the magnitude of the non-stoichiometry being a function of composition and temperature in air. It was found that hematite dissolves neither MgO nor ZnO in air.

The phase equilibria and liquidus temperatures in the binary SiO2-ZnO system and in the ternary Al2O3-SiO2-ZnO system at low Al2O3 concentrations have been experimentally determined using the equilibration and quenching technique followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. In the SiO2-ZnO system, two binary eutectics involving the congruently melting willemite (Zn2SiO4) were found at 1448 +/- 5 degrees C and 0.52 +/- 0.01 mole fraction ZnO and at 1502 +/- 5 degrees C and 0.71 +/- 0.01 mole fraction ZnO, respectively. The two ternary eutectics involving willemite previously reported in the Al2O3SiO2-ZnO system were found to be at 1315 +/- 5 degrees C and 1425 +/- 25 T, respectively. The compositions of the eutectics are 0.07, 0.52, and 0.41 and 0.05, 0.28, and 0.67 mole fraction Al2O3, SiO2, and ZnO, respectively. The results of the present investigation are significantly different from the results of previous studies.

Liquidus temperatures and phase equilibria have been determined in the olivine primary phase field of the MgO-FeO-SiO2-Al2O3 system. Liquidus isotherms have been determined in the temperature range from 1748 to 1873K. The results are presented in the form of pseudo-ternary sections of the MgO-FeO-SiO2 with 2 and 3wt% Al2O3 in the liquid. The study enables the liquidus to be described for a range of SiO2/MgO ratios. It was found that liquidus temperatures in the olivine primary phase field decrease with the addition of Al2O3.

In this paper, we describe the Vannotea system - an application designed to enable collaborating groups to discuss and annotate collections of high quality images, video, audio or 3D objects. The system has been designed specifically to capture and share scholarly discourse and annotations about multimedia research data by teams of trusted colleagues within a research or academic environment. As such, it provides: authenticated access to a web browser search interface for discovering and retrieving media objects; a media replay window that can incorporate a variety of embedded plug-ins to render different scientific media formats; an annotation authoring, editing, searching and browsing tool; and session logging and replay capabilities. Annotations are personal remarks, interpretations, questions or references that can be attached to whole files, segments or regions. Vannotea enables annotations to be attached either synchronously (using jabber message passing and audio/video conferencing) or asynchronously and stand-alone. The annotations are stored on an Annotea server, extended for multimedia content. Their access, retrieval and re-use is controlled via Shibboleth identity management and XACML access policies.

Developing a unified classification system to replace four of the systems currently used in disability athletics (i.e., track and field) has been widely advocated. The diverse impairments to be included in a unified system require severed assessment methods, results of which cannot be meaningfully compared. Therefore, the taxonomic basis of current classification systems is invalid in a unified system. Biomechanical analysis establishes that force, a vector described in terms of magnitude and direction, is a key determinant of success in all athletic disciplines. It is posited that all impairments to be included in a unified system may be classified as either force magnitude impairments (FMI) or force control impairments (FCI). This framework would provide a valid taxonomic basis for a unified system, creating the opportunity to decrease the number of classes and enhance the viability of disability athletics.

This paper reports on a system for automated agent negotiation, based on a formal and executable approach to capture the behavior of parties involved in a negotiation. It uses the JADE agent framework, and its major distinctive feature is the use of declarative negotiation strategies. The negotiation strategies are expressed in a declarative rules language, defeasible logic, and are applied using the implemented system DR-DEVICE. The key ideas and the overall system architecture are described, and a particular negotiation case is presented in detail.

Action systems are a construct for reasoning about concurrent, reactive systems, in which concurrent behaviour is described by interleaving atomic actions. Sere and Troubitsyna have proposed an extension to action systems in which actions may be expressed and composed using discrete probabilistic choice as well as demonic nondeterministic choice. In this paper we develop a trace-based semantics for probabilistic action systems. This semantics provides a simple theoretical base on which practical refinement rules for probabilistic action systems may be justified.

This paper describes the emergence of new functional items in the Mauritian Creole noun phrase, following the collapse of the French determiner system when superstrate and substrate came into contact. The aim of the paper is to show how the new language strived to express the universal semantic contrasts of (in)definiteness and singular vs. plural. The process of grammaticalization of new functional items in the determiner system was accompanied by changes in the syntax from French to creole. An analysis within Chomsky’s Minimalist framework (1995, 2000, 2001) suggests that these changes were driven by the need to map semantic features onto the syntax.

This paper examines the article system in interlanguage grammar focusing on Japanese learners of English, whose native language lacks articles. It will be demonstrated that for the acquisition of the English article system, count/mass distinctions and definiteness are the crucial factors. Although Japanese does not employ the article system to encode these aspects, it will be argued that they are nevertheless syntactically encoded through its classifier system. Hence, the problem for these learners must be to map these features onto the appropriate surface forms as the Missing Surface Inflection Hypothesis predicts (Prévost & White 2000). This suggestion will further be supported empirically by a fill-in-the article task. It will be concluded that these Japanese learners understand the English article system fairly well, possibly due to their native language, yet have problems with realizing the relevant features (i.e. count/mass distinctions and definiteness) in the target language.
