Purpose. The aims of this study are to evaluate whether cytochrome P450 (CYP)2D1/2D2-deficient dark agouti (DA) rats and/or CYP2D1/2D2-replete Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats are suitable preclinical models of the human, with respect to mirroring the very low plasma concentrations of metabolically derived oxymorphone seen in humans following oxycodone administration, and to examine the effects of streptozotocin-induced diabetes on the pharmacokinetics of oxycodone and its metabolites, noroxycodone and oxymorphone, in both rodent strains. Methods. High-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry was used to quantify the serum concentrations of oxycodone, noroxycodone, and oxymorphone following subcutaneous administration of bolus doses of oxycodone (2 mg/kg) to groups of nondiabetic and diabetic rats. Results. The mean (+/- SEM) areas under the serum concentration vs. time curves for oxycodone and noroxycodone were significantly higher in DA relative to SD rats (diabetic, p < 0.05; nondiabetic, p < 0.005). Serum concentrations of oxymorphone were very low (< 6.9 nM). Conclusions. Both DA and SD rats are suitable rodent models to study oxycodone's pharmacology, as their systemic exposure to metabolically derived oxymorphone (potent mu-opioid agonist) is very low, mirroring that seen in humans following oxycodone administration. Systemic exposure to oxycodone and noroxycodone was consistently higher for DA than for SD rats showing that strain differences predominated over diabetes status.

Since it was written about the middle of the 1st Century AD, and up to comparatively recent times, the great Herbal, or Materia Medica, of Dioscorides provided medicine with its chief source of information about what were then considered therapeutic substances. The work contained data on various materials of botanical, biological and mineral origin which were claimed to provide benefit to sufferers from epilepsy, though often with no clear underlying rationale for their use. Some of these materials continued to be used as antiepileptic remedies over many centuries till they were finally recognised to be without useful effect in the disorder. The longest survivor amongst the Dioscoridean antiepileptic remedies was a rather esoteric one, viz. two stones taken from the belly of a young swallow during the rising phase of the moon and also whilst the swallow's parent birds were absent from the nest. The stones, or one of them, were worn against the skin of the seizure sufferer. The use of the swallow stones for epilepsy was recommended as late as in the writings of Thomas Willis (1675). We present a new set of dissipationless N-body simulations to examine the feasibility of creating bright ellipticals (following the Kormendy relation, hereafter KR) by hierarchically merging present-day early-type dwarf galaxies, and to study how the encounter parameters affect the location of the end product in the (mu(e))-R-e plane. We investigate the merging of one-component galaxies of both equal and different masses, the merging of two-component galaxy models to explore the effect of dark haloes on the final galaxy characteristics, and the merging of ultracompact dwarf galaxies. We find that the increase of (mu(e)) with R-e is attributable to an increase in the initial orbital energy. The merger remnants shift down in the (mu(e))-R-e plane and fail to reach the KR. Thus, the KR is not reproducible by mergers of dwarf early-type systems, rendering untenable the theory that present-day dwarfs are responsible for even a small fraction of the present-day ellipticals, unless a considerable amount of dissipation is invoked. However, we do find that present-day dwarfs can be formed by the merger of ultracompact dwarfs.

The effects of the herbicide diuron on the early life history stages of broadcast spawning and brooding corals were examined in laboratory experiments. Fertilisation of Acropora millepora and Montipora aequituberculata oocytes were not inhibited at diuron concentrations of up to 1000 mu gl(-1). Metamorphosis of symbiont-free A. millepora larvae was only significantly inhibited at 300 mu gl(-1) diuron. Pocillopora damicornis larvae, which contain symbiotic dinoflagellates, were able to undergo metamorphosis after 24h exposure to diuron at 1000 mu gl(-1). Two-week old P. damicornis recruits on the other hand were as susceptible to diuron as adult colonies, with expulsion of symbiotic dinoflagellates (bleaching) evident at 10 mu gl(-1) diuron after 96 h exposure. Reversible metamorphosis was observed at high diuron concentrations, with fully bleached polyps escaping from their skeletons. Pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) chlorophyll fluorescence techniques demonstrated a reduction in photosynthetic efficiency (Delta F/F'(m)) in illuminated P. dami- cornis recruits after a 2h exposure to 1 mu gl(-1) diuron. The dark-adapted quantum yields (F-v/F-m also declined, indicating chronic photoinhibition and damage to photosystem H. Crown Copyright (c) 2004 Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Coral bleaching (the loss of symbiotic dinoflagellates from reef-building corals) is most frequently caused by high-light and temperature conditions. We exposed the explants of the hermatypic coral Stylophora pistillata to four combinations of light and temperature in late spring and also in late summer. During mid-summer, two NOAA bleaching warnings were issued for Heron Island reef (Southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia) when sea temperature exceeded the NOAA bleaching threshold, and a 'mild' (in terms of the whole coral community) bleaching event occurred, resulting in widespread S. pistillata bleaching and mortality. Symbiotic dinoflagellate biomass decreased by more than half from late spring to late summer (from 2.5x10(6) to 0.8x10(6) dinoflagellates cm(2) coral tissue), and those dinoflagellates that remained after summer became photoinhibited more readily (dark-adapted F (V) : F (M) decreased to (0.3 compared with 0.4 in spring), and died in greater numbers (up to 17% dinoflagellate mortality compared with 5% in the spring) when exposed to artificially elevated light and temperature. Adding exogenous antioxidants (D-mannitol and L-ascorbic acid) to the water surrounding the coral had no clear effect on either photoinhibition or symbiont mortality. These data show that light and temperature stress cause mortality of the dinoflagellate symbionts within the coral, and that susceptibility to light and temperature stress is strongly related to coral condition. Photoinhibitory mechanisms are clearly involved, and will increase through a positive feedback mechanism: symbiont loss promotes further symbiont loss as the light microenvironment becomes progressively harsher.

In this Study we examine the spectral and morphometric properties of the four important lunar mare dome fields near Cauchy, Arago, Hortensius. and Milichius. We utilize Clementine UV vis mulfispectral data to examine the soil composition of the mare domes while employing telescopic CCD imagery to compute digital elevation maps in order to determine their morphometric properties, especially flank slope, height, and edifice Volume. After reviewing previous attempts to determine topographic data for lunar domes, we propose an image-based 3D reconstruction approach which is based on a combination of photoclinometry and shape from shading. Accordingly, we devise a classification scheme for lunar Marc domes which is based on a principal component analysis of the determined spectral and morphometric features. For the effusive mare domes of the examined fields we establish four Classes, two of which are further divided into two subclasses, respectively, where each class represents distinct combinations of spectral and morphometric dome properties. As a general trend, shallow and steep domes formed out of low-TiO2 basalts are observed in the Hortensius and Milichius dome fields, while the domes near Cauchy and Arago that consist of high-TiO2 basalts are all very shallow. The intrusive domes of our data set cover a wide continuous range of spectral and morphometric quantities, generally characterized by larger diameters and shallower flank slopes than effusive domes. A comparison to effusive and intrusive mare domes in other lunar regions, highland domes, and lunar cones has shown that the examined four mare dome fields display Such a richness in spectral properties and 3D dome shape that the established representation remains valid in a more global context. Furthermore, we estimate the physical parameters of dome formation for the examined domes based on a rheologic model. Each class of effusive domes defined in terms of spectral and morphometric properties is characterized by its specific range of values for lava viscosity, effusion rate, and duration of the effusion process. For our data set we report lava viscosities between about 10(2) and 10(8) Pas, effusion rates between 25 and 600 m(3) s(-1), and durations of the effusion process between three weeks and 18 years. Lava viscosity decreases with increasing R-415/R-750 spectral ratio and thus TiO2 content; however, the correlation is not strong, implying an important influence of further parameters like effusion temperature on lava viscosity.

Variation in the rate at which parasitic gnathiid isopod juveniles emerged from the benthos at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, was examined (I) every 4 or 8 h throughout the day and night over a 24 h period, (2) over a 12 h period during the day or night, and (3) during different lunar phases (weeks). The number of gnathiids sampled per 4 or 8 h was low, with only 30% of the traps containing gnathiids and the abundance ranging from 0 to 3 gnathiids m(-2). The number of gnathiids that emerged over 12 h, in contrast, ranged from 0 to 36 m(-2). During the third and fifth weeks sampled, more gnathiids emerged during the day than at night. This coincided with the full moon and new moon. Most gnathiids that emerged from the reef during the day (98 %) had not fed, in contrast to those sampled at night (71%). Of the gnathiids with no engorged gut, most (97 %) of those collected during the day were small (II. mm) compared to those collected at night (19%), the latter being mostly >1 mm. Of the gnathiids with an engorged gut, most were sampled at night (83 %) and 97 % were >1 mm in size. These percentages suggest differences in the emergence behaviour among Life stages or species of gnathiids. This study, which shows that gnathiids do emerge during the day and supports other studies showing that gnathiids also attack fishes during the day, has important implications for understanding the role of cleaner fish and their main food source, gnathiids, as it shows there is a constant source of gnathiids emerging from the reef during the day and night in search of hosts.
