A set of varying-thickness Au-films were thermally evaporated onto poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) thin film surfaces. The Au/PSA bi-layer targets were then implanted with 50 keV N+ ions to a fluence of 1 × 1016 ions/cm2 to promote metal-to-polymer adhesion and to enhance their mechanical and electrical performance. Electrical conductivity measurements of the implanted Au/PSA thin films showed a sharp percolation behavior versus the pre-implant Au-film thickness with a percolation threshold near the nominal thickness of 44 Å. The electrical conductivity results are discussed along with the film microstructure and the elemental diffusion/mixing within the Au/PSA interface obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ion beam analysis techniques (RBS and ERD).
Finite element analysis of fault bend influence on stick-slip instability along an intra-plate fault
Resumo:
Earthquakes have been recognized as resulting from stick-slip frictional instabilities along the faults between deformable rocks. A three-dimensional finite-element code for modeling the nonlinear frictional contact behaviors between deformable bodies with the node-to-point contact element strategy has been developed and applied here to investigate the fault geometry influence on the nucleation and development process of the stick-slip instability along an intra-plate fault through a typical fault bend model, which has a pre-cut fault that is artificially bent by an angle of 5.6degrees at the fault center. The numerical results demonstrate that the geometry of the fault significantly affects nucleation, termination and restart of the stick-slip instability along the intra-plate fault, and all these instability phenomena can be well simulated using the current finite-element algorithm.

Recent discoveries of different modes of exocytosis and a plethora of molecules involved in neurotransmitter release has resulted in demand for more rapid and efficient methods for monitoring endogenous glutamate release from various tissue sources. In this article, we describe a high throughput microplate version of the enzyme-linked fluorescence detection method for the measurement of released glutamate, which utilises glutamate dehydrogenase, and the reduction of NADP to NADPH. Previous versions of this method rely upon cuvette-based fluorimeters for detection that are limited by large sample volumes and small numbers of samples that can be measured simultaneously. Comparison between the two methods shows that the microplate assay has comparable performance to the cuvette-based assay but has the capacity to analyse many times more samples in a given run. This increased capacity provides improved experimental design opportunities, higher experimental throughput and better comparison between experimental conditions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. This paper investigates the non-linear bending behaviour of functionally graded plates that are bonded with piezoelectric actuator layers and subjected to transverse loads and a temperature gradient based on Reddy's higher-order shear deformation plate theory. The von Karman-type geometric non-linearity, piezoelectric and thermal effects are included in mathematical formulations. The temperature change is due to a steady-state heat conduction through the plate thickness. The material properties are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction according to a power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The plate is clamped at two opposite edges, while the remaining edges can be free, simply supported or clamped. Differential quadrature approximation in the X-axis is employed to convert the partial differential governing equations and the associated boundary conditions into a set of ordinary differential equations. By choosing the appropriate functions as the displacement and stress functions on each nodal line and then applying the Galerkin procedure, a system of non-linear algebraic equations is obtained, from which the non-linear bending response of the plate is determined through a Picard iteration scheme. Numerical results for zirconia/aluminium rectangular plates are given in dimensionless graphical form. The effects of the applied actuator voltage, the volume fraction exponent, the temperature gradient, as well as the characteristics of the boundary conditions are also studied in detail. Thin, piezoelectric circular plates are frequently used as active components in transducer and smart materials applications. This paper reports on the exact, explicit solution for the transient motion of a piezoelectric circular plate, built-in or simply supported on the edge and electrically grounded over the entire surface. Expressed by elementary Bessel functions and obtained via exact inverse Laplace transforms, the solution enables the efficient calculation of accurate system parameters. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Mesostructured titania thin films were prepared by an evaporation-induced self-assembly process. The highly acidic sot precursors contained titanium(IV) tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) as a titanium source, a tri-block copolymer Pluronic P123 as a template, and acetylacetonate and HCl as hydrolysis inhibitors. Characteristics of the resultant titania thin films were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, N-2-adsorption/desorption analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and TEM investigations on the as-synthesised films revealed the appearance of cubic-like, pseudohexagonal, and lamellar mesophases; depending on the amount of water in the sols of film precursors. Template removal by a calcination process yields high surface area (320-360 m(2)/g) mesoporous materials with crystalline anatase frameworks. Water content also influences the degree of anatase crystallinity of the calcined films. Higher water content resulted in improved anatase crystallinity. These nanostructured materials are of interest for photocatalysts, pbotoelectrochemical solar cells and other photonic devices. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Distribution and organisation of the mineral, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), has been investigated in the exoskeleton of the xylophagid fly larva Exeretonevra angustifrons Hardy. While head capsule and anal plate are smooth with a thin epicuticle, the epicuticle of the body is thicker and shows unusual micro-architecture comprised of minute hemispherical (dome-shaped) protrusions. Electron microprobe analysis and energy dispersive spectroscopy revealed heterogeneity of mineral elements across body cuticle and a concentration of ACP in the epicuticle, especially associated with the hemispherical structures. Further imaging and analysis showed the bulk of the ACP to be present in nano-sized granules. It is hypothesised that the specific distribution of ACP may enhance cuticular hardness or durability without reducing flexibility. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Despite experimental evidences, the contributions of the concrete slab and composite action to the vertical shear strength of simply supported steel-concrete composite beams are not considered in current design codes, which lead to conservative designs. In this paper, the finite element method is used to investigate the flexural and shear strengths of simply supported composite beams under combined bending and shear. A three-dimensional finite element model has been developed to account for geometric and material nonlinear behavior of composite beams, and verified by experimental results. The verified finite element model is than employed to quantify the contributions of the concrete slab and composite action to the moment and shear capacities of composite beams. The effect of the degree of shear connection on the vertical shear strength of deep composite beams loaded in shear is studied. Design models for vertical shear strength including contributions from the concrete slab and composite action and for the ultimate moment-shear interaction ate proposed for the design of simply supported composite beams in combined bending and shear. The proposed design models provide a consistent and economical design procedure for simply supported composite beams.
