This paper is concerned with assessing the interference rejection capabilities of linear and circular array of dipoles that can be part of a base station of a code-division multiple-access cellular communication system. The performance criteria for signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) improvement employed in this paper is the spatial interference suppression coefficient. We first derive an expression for this figure of merit and then analyze and compare the SIR performance of the two types of arrays. For a linear array, we quantitatively assess the degradation in SIR performance, as we move from array broadside to array end-fire direction. In addition, the effect of mutual coupling is taken into account.

We compare three proposals for nondeterministic control-sign gates implemented using linear optics and conditional measurements with nonideal ancilla mode production and detection. The simplified Knill-Laflamme-Milburn gate [Ralph , Phys. Rev. A 65, 012314 (2001)] appears to be the most resilient under these conditions. We also find that the operation of this gate can be improved by adjusting the beam splitter ratios to compensate to some extent for the effects of the imperfect ancilla.

Denote the set of 21 non-isomorphic cubic graphs of order 10 by L. We first determine precisely which L is an element of L occur as the leave of a partial Steiner triple system, thus settling the existence problem for partial Steiner triple systems of order 10 with cubic leaves. Then we settle the embedding problem for partial Steiner triple systems with leaves L is an element of L. This second result is obtained as a corollary of a more general result which gives, for each integer v greater than or equal to 10 and each L is an element of L, necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a partial Steiner triple system of order v with leave consisting of the complement of L and v - 10 isolated vertices. The diffusion of hexane, heptane, octane, and decane in nanoporous MCM-41 silica at various temperatures is investigated by the zero-length-column method. The diffusion coefficients are derived by a complete-time-range analysis of desorption curves at different purge flow rates and temperatures. The results show that the calculated low-coverage diffusivity values decrease monotonically, and the derived Henry's law constants increase, as the carbon number of paraffins increases. The study reveals that transport is strongly influenced by intracrystalline diffusion and dominated by the sorbate-sorbent interaction. The diffusion activation energy and adsorption isosteric heat at zero loading increase monotonically with the carbon number of linear paraffins, but their ratio is essentially constant for each adsorbate compound.

In this paper, we investigate the effects of potential models on the description of equilibria of linear molecules (ethylene and ethane) adsorption on graphitized thermal carbon black. GCMC simulation is used as a tool to give adsorption isotherms, isosteric heat of adsorption and the microscopic configurations of these molecules. At the heart of the GCMC are the potential models, describing fluid-fluid interaction and solid-fluid interaction. Here we studied the two potential models recently proposed in the literature, the UA-TraPPE and AUA4. Their impact in the description of adsorption behavior of pure components will be discussed. Mixtures of these components with nitrogen and argon are also studied. Nitrogen is modeled a two-site plus discrete charges while argon as a spherical particle. GCMC simulation is also used for generating simulation mixture isotherms. It is found that co-operation between species occurs when the surface is fractionally covered while competition is important when surface is fully loaded.

Analytical solutions are presented for linear finite-strain one-dimensional consolidation of initially unconsolidated soil layers with surcharge loading for both one- and two-way drainage. These solutions complement earlier solutions for initially unconsolidated soil layers without surcharge and initially normally consolidated soil layers with surcharge. Small-strain solutions for the consolidation of initially unconsolidated soil layers with surcharge loading are also presented, and the relationship between the earlier solutions for initially unconsolidated soil without surcharge and the corresponding small-strain solutions, which was not addressed in the earlier work, is clarified. The new solutions for initially unconsolidated soil with surcharge loading can be applied to the analysis of low stress consolidation tests and to the partial validation of numerical solutions of non-linear finite-strain consolidation. They also clarify a formerly perplexing aspect of finite-strain solution charts first noted in numerical solutions. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Based on the observation that bimanual finger tapping movements tend toward mirror symmetry with respect to the body midline, despite the synchronous activation of non-homologous muscles, F. Mechsner, D. Kerzel, G. Knoblich, and W. Prinz (2001) [Perceptual basis of bimanual coordination. Nature, 414, 69-73] suggested that the basis of rhythmic coordination is purely spatial/perceptual in nature, and independent of the neuro-anatomical constraints of the motor system. To investigate this issue further, we employed a four finger tapping task similar to that used by F. Mechsner and G. Knoblich (2004) [Do muscle matter in bimanual coordination? Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 30, 490-503] in which six male participants were required to alternately tap combinations of adjacent pairs of index (1), middle (M) and ring (R) fingers of each hand in time with an auditory metronome. The metronome pace increased continuously from 1 Hz to 3 Hz over the course of a 30-s trial. Each participant performed three blocks of trials in which finger combination for each hand (IM or MR) and mode of coordination (mirror or parallel) were presented in random order. Within each block, the right hand was placed in one of three orientations; prone, neutral and supine. The order of blocks was counterbalanced across the six participants. The left hand maintained a prone position throughout the experiment. On the basis of discrete relative phase analyses between synchronised taps, the time at which the initial mode of coordination was lost was determined for each trial. When the right hand was prone, transitions occurred only from parallel symmetry to mirror symmetry, regardless of finger combination. In contrast, when the right hand was supine, transitions occurred only from mirror symmetry to parallel but no transitions were observed in the opposite direction. In the right hand neutral condition, mirror and parallel symmetry are insufficient to describe the modes of coordination since the hands are oriented orthogonally. When defined anatomically, however, the results in each of the three right hand orientations are consistent. That is, synchronisation of finger tapping is deter-mined by a hierarchy of control of individual fingers based on their intrinsic neuro-mechanical properties rather than on the basis of their spatial orientation. Measurement of protein-polymer second virial coefficients (B-AP) by sedimentation equilibrium studies of carbonic anhydrase and cytochrome c in the presence of dextrans (T10-T80) has revealed an inverse dependence of B-AP upon dextran molecular mass that conforms well with the behaviour predicted for the excluded-volume interaction between a spherical protein solute A and a random-flight representation of the polymeric cosolute P. That model of the protein-polymer interaction is also shown to provide a reasonable description of published gel chromatographic and equilibrium dialysis data on the effect of polymer molecular mass on BAP for human serum albumin in the presence of polyethylene glycols, a contrary finding from analysis of albumin solubility measurements being rejected on theoretical grounds. Inverse dependence upon polymer chainlength is also the predicted excluded-volume effect on the strength of several types of macromolecular equilibria-protein isomerization, protein dimerization, and 1 : 1 complex formation between dissimilar protein reactants. It is therefore concluded that published experimental observations of the reverse dependence, preferential reaction enhancement within DNA replication complexes by larger polyethylene glycols, must reflect the consequences of cosolute chemical interactions that outweigh those of thermodynamic nonideality arising from excluded-volume effects. Using an elementary example based on two simple harmonic oscillators, we show how a relational time may be defined that leads to an approximate Schrodinger dynamics for subsystems, with corrections leading to an intrinsic decoherence in the energy eigenstates of the subsystem.

Small-angle neutron scattering measurements on a series of monodisperse linear entangled polystyrene melts in nonlinear flow through an abrupt 4:1 contraction have been made. Clear signatures of melt deformation and subsequent relaxation can be observed in the scattering patterns, which were taken along the centerline. These data are compared with the predictions of a recently derived molecular theory. Two levels of molecular theory are used: a detailed equation describing the evolution of molecular structure over all length scales relevant to the scattering data and a simplified version of the model, which is suitable for finite element computations. The velocity field for the complex melt flow is computed using the simplified model and scattering predictions are made by feeding these flow histories into the detailed model. The modeling quantitatively captures the full scattering intensity patterns over a broad range of data with independent variation of position within the contraction geometry, bulk flow rate and melt molecular weight. The study provides a strong, quantitative validation of current theoretical ideas concerning the microscopic dynamics of entangled polymers which builds upon existing comparisons with nonlinear mechanical stress data. Furthermore, we are able to confirm the appreciable length scale dependence of relaxation in polymer melts and highlight some wider implications of this phenomenon.
