The moisture content of the coarse coking coal product from the centrifuges of preparation plants was investigated to evaluate the contribution of three types of water: that held internally in pores, that in fillets at points of contacts between the particles, and the moisture covering the surface. A standardised laboratory centrifuge test was used to measure the total non-centrifugable moisture (NCM) content and also the quantity held in internal pores, called NCMi. The fillet moisture NCMf was estimated by means of a formulation which relies on experimentally measured holdup volumes, supplemented by a physical model. The surface moisture NCMs could then be derived by difference. The NCMf, which depends on the body force, the particle size and the surface tension and contact angle of the liquid, ranges from effectively zero for large particles to 10% for fines. The surface moisture NCMs is of the order of 0.5% for high rank coals and increases to 4.5% for lower rank coals. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In liquid-liquid dispersion systems, the dynamic change of the interfacial properties between the two immiscible liquids plays an important role in both the emulsification process and emulsion stabilization. In this paper, experimentally measured dynamic interfacial tensions of 1-chlorobutane in the aqueous solutions of various random copolymers of polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVAA) are presented. Theoretical analyses on these results suggest that the adsorption of the polymer molecules is controlled neither by the bulk diffusion process nor the activation energy barrier for the adsorption but the conformation of polymer molecules. Based on the concept of critical concentration of condensation for polymer adsorption, as well as the observation that the rate at which the dynamic interfacial tension changes does not correlate to the PVAA's ability to stabilize a single drop, it is postulated that the main stabilization mechanism for the PVAAs is by steric hindrance, not the Gibbs-Marangoni effect offered by the small molecule surfactants.

The effect of the addition of elemental Mg, Sri and Pb on the sintering of impressed prealloyed 2124 and 6061 powder has been investigated. Despite being sintered at a temperature that resulted in similar to20 vol.% liquid phase, high density was possible only upon the addition of similar to1% elemental Mg as well as trace amounts of Sri or Pb. Additions of Mg facilitated oxide disruption, while Sri and Pb segregated to the liquid phase, where they reduced the liquid's surface tension, thus improving sintering. Once considered unique to the lung, surfactant proteins have been clearly identified in the intestine and peritoneum and are suggested to exist in several other organs. In the lung, surfactant proteins assist in the formation of a monolayer of surface-active phospholipid at the liquid-air interface of the alveolar lining, reducing the surface tension at this surface. In contrast, surface-active phospholipid adsorbed to articular surfaces has been identified as the load-bearing boundary lubricant of the joint. This raises the question of whether surfactant proteins in synovial fluid (SF) are required for the formation of the adsorbed layer in normal joints. Proteins from small volumes of equine SF were resolved by 1- and 2-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and detected by Western blotting to investigate the presence of surfactant proteins. The study showed that surfactant proteins A and D (SP-A and SP-D) are present in the SF of normal horses. We suggest that, like surface-active phospholipid, SP-A and SP-D play a significant role in the functioning of joints. Next will be clarification of the roles of surfactant proteins as disease markers in a variety of joint diseases, such as degenerative joint disease and inflammatory problems.

Strontium modification is known to alter the amount, characteristics, and distribution of porosity in Al-Si castings. Although many theories have been proposed to account for these effects, most can be considered inadequate because of their failure to resolve contradictions and discrepancies in the literature. In an attempt to critically appraise some of these theories, the amount, distribution, and morphology of porosity were examined in sand-cast plates of Sr-free and Sr-containing pure Al, Al-l wt pet Si, and Al-9 wt pet Si alloys. Statistical significance testing was used to verify apparent trends in the porosity data. No apparent differences in the amount, distribution, and morphology of porosity were observed between Sr-free and Sr-containing alloys with no or very small eutectic volume fractions. However, Sr modification significantly changed the amount, distribution, and morphology of porosity in alloys with a significant volume fraction of eutectic. ne addition of Sr reduced porosity in the hot spot region of the casting, and the pores became well dispersed and rounded. This result can be explained by considering the combined effect of the casting design and the differences in the pattern of eutectic solidification between unmodified and Sr-modified alloys.

In this work, we propose an improvement of the classical Derjaguin-Broekhoff-de Boer (DBdB) theory for capillary condensation/evaporation in mesoporous systems. The primary idea of this improvement is to employ the Gibbs-Tolman-Koenig-Buff equation to predict the surface tension changes in mesopores. In addition, the statistical film thickness (so-called t-curve) evaluated accurately on the basis of the adsorption isotherms measured for the MCM-41 materials is used instead of the originally proposed t-curve (to take into account the excess of the chemical potential due to the surface forces). It is shown that the aforementioned modifications of the original DBdB theory have significant implications for the pore size analysis of mesoporous solids. To verify our improvement of the DBdB pore size analysis method (IDBdB), a series of the calcined MCM-41 samples, which are well-defined materials with hexagonally ordered cylindrical mesopores, were used for the evaluation of the pore size distributions. The correlation of the IDBdB method with the empirically calibrated Kruk-Jaroniec-Sayari (KJS) relationship is very good in the range of small mesopores. So, a major advantage of the IDBdB method is its applicability for small mesopores as well as for the mesopore range beyond that established by the KJS calibration, i.e., for mesopore radii greater than similar to4.5 nm. The comparison of the IDBdB results with experimental data reported by Kruk and Jaroniec for capillary condensation/evaporation as well as with the results from nonlocal density functional theory developed by Neimark et al. clearly justifies our approach. Note that the proposed improvement of the classical DBdB method preserves its original simplicity and simultaneously ensures a significant improvement of the pore size analysis, which is confirmed by the independent estimation of the mean pore size by the powder X-ray diffraction method.

Labeled surfactants have impurities in the form of un-reacted molecules or distributed products which is a constraint in evaluating its performance. This short review deals with the purity issue of surfactants and is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the methods of purification employed for obtaining a surface chemically pure surfactant for evaluation. In the second part the use of surface chemically impure surfactant in application areas of formulations is presented to highlight the impending impact on reproducibility of results.

Equilibrium adsorption and desorption in mesoporous adsorbents is considered on the basis of rigorous thermodynamic analysis, in which the curvature-dependent solid-fluid potential and the compressibility of the adsorbed phase are accounted for. The compressibility of the adsorbed phase is considered for the first time in the literature in the framework of a rigorous thermodynamic approach. Our model is a further development of continuum thermodynamic approaches proposed by Derjaguin and Broekhoff and de Boer, and it is based on a reference isotherm of a non-porous material having the same chemical structure as that of the pore wall. In this improved thermodynamic model, we incorporated a prescription for transforming the solid-fluid potential exerted by the flat reference surface to the potential inside cylindrical and spherical pores. We relax the assumption that the adsorbed film density is constant and equal to that of the saturated liquid. Instead, the density of the adsorbed fluid is allowed to vary over the adsorbed film thickness and is calculated by an equation of state. As a result, the model is capable to describe the adsorption-desorption reversibility in cylindrical pores having diameter less than 2 nm. The generalized thermodynamic model may be applied to the pore size characterization of mesoporous materials instead of much more time-consuming molecular approaches. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Lipoamino acids (LAAs) are promoieties able to enhance the amphiphilicity of drugs, facilitating their interaction with cell membranes. Experimental and computational studies were carried out on two series of lipophilic amide conjugates between a model drug (tranylcypromine, TCP) and LAA or alkanoic acids containing a short, medium or long alkyl side chain (C-4 to C-16). The effects of these compounds were evaluated by monolayer surface tension analysis and differential scanning calorimetry using dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine nnonolayers and liposomes as biomembrane models. The experimental results were related to independent calculations to determine partition coefficient and blood-brain partitioning. The comparison of TCP-LAA conjugates with the related series of TCP alkanoyl amides confirmed that the ability to interact with the biomembrane models is not due to the mere increase of lipophilicity, but mainly to the amphipatic nature and the kind of LAA residue. The dynamics of drop formation and pinch-off have been investigated for a series of low viscosity elastic fluids possessing similar shear viscosities, but differing substantially in elastic properties. On initial approach to the pinch region, the viscoelastic fluids all exhibit the same global necking behavior that is observed for a Newtonian fluid of equivalent shear viscosity. For these low viscosity dilute polymer solutions, inertial and capillary forces form the dominant balance in this potential flow regime, with the viscous force being negligible. The approach to the pinch point, which corresponds to the point of rupture for a Newtonian fluid, is extremely rapid in such solutions, with the sudden increase in curvature producing very large extension rates at this location. In this region the polymer molecules are significantly extended, causing a localized increase in the elastic stresses, which grow to balance the capillary pressure. This prevents the necked fluid from breaking off, as would occur in the equivalent Newtonian fluid. Alternatively, a cylindrical filament forms in which elastic stresses and capillary pressure balance, and the radius decreases exponentially with time. A (0+1)-dimensional finitely extensible nonlinear elastic dumbbell theory incorporating inertial, capillary, and elastic stresses is able to capture the basic features of the experimental observations. Before the critical "pinch time" t(p), an inertial-capillary balance leads to the expected 2/3-power scaling of the minimum radius with time: R-min similar to(t(p)-t)(2/3). However, the diverging deformation rate results in large molecular deformations and rapid crossover to an elastocapillary balance for times t>t(p). In this region, the filament radius decreases exponentially with time R-min similar to exp[(t(p)-t)/lambda(1)], where lambda(1) is the characteristic time constant of the polymer molecules. Measurements of the relaxation times of polyethylene oxide solutions of varying concentrations and molecular weights obtained from high speed imaging of the rate of change of filament radius are significantly higher than the relaxation times estimated from Rouse-Zimm theory, even though the solutions are within the dilute concentration region as determined using intrinsic viscosity measurements. The effective relaxation times exhibit the expected scaling with molecular weight but with an additional dependence on the concentration of the polymer in solution. This is consistent with the expectation that the polymer molecules are in fact highly extended during the approach to the pinch region (i.e., prior to the elastocapillary filament thinning regime) and subsequently as the filament is formed they are further extended by filament stretching at a constant rate until full extension of the polymer coil is achieved. In this highly extended state, intermolecular interactions become significant, producing relaxation times far above theoretical predictions for dilute polymer solutions under equilibrium conditions. A new theory of particle discharge in high tension roll (HTR) separation is presented. The discharge dynamics of an isolated charged particle resting on a conducting surface are studied first. The analysis is extended to particle discharge in a homogenous particle bed. Finally, the paper looks at the more realistic scenario of particle discharge in a non-homogenous particle bed. The consequences of the resulting theory on HTR separation are discussed. Predictions from the new theory are tested against experimental HTR separations at the pilot scale. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd.
