GCMC simulations are applied to the adsorption of sub-critical methanol and ethanol on graphitized carbon black at 300 K. The carbon black was modelled both with and without carbonyl functional groups. Large differences are seen between the amounts adsorbed for different carbonyl configurations at low pressure prior to monolayer coverage. Once a monolayer has been formed on the carbon black, the adsorption behaviour is similar between the model surfaces with and without functional groups. Simulation isotherms for the case of low carbonyl concentrations or no carbonyls are qualitatively similar to the few experimental isotherms available in the literature for methanol and ethanol adsorption on highly graphitized carbon black. Isosteric heats and adsorbed phase heat capacities are shown to be very sensitive to carbonyl configurations. A maximum is observed in the adsorbed phase heat capacity of the alcohols for all simulations but is unrealistically high for the case of a plain graphite surface. The addition of carbonyls to the surface greatly reduces this maximum and approaches experimental data with carbonyl concentration as low as 0.09 carbonyls/nm(2).

Most of the hydrogen production processes are designed for large-scale industrial uses and are not suitable for a compact hydrogen device to be used in systems like solid polymer fuel cells. Integrating the reaction step, the gas purification and the heat supply can lead to small-scale hydrogen production systems. The aim of this research is to study the influence of several reaction parameters on hydrogen production using liquid phase reforming of sugar solution over Pt, Pd, and Ni supported on nanostructured supports. It was found that the desired catalytic pathway for H-2 production involves cleavage of C-C, C-H and O-H bonds that adsorb on the catalyst surface. Thus a good catalyst for production of H2 by liquid-phase reforming must facilitate C-C bond cleavage and promote removal of adsorbed CO species by the water-gas shift reaction, but the catalyst must not facilitate C-O bond cleavage and hydrogenation of CO or CO2. Apart from studying various catalysts, a commercial Pt/gamma-alumina catalyst was used to study the effect of temperature at three different temperatures of 458, 473 and 493 K. Some of the spent catalysts were characterised using TGA, SEM and XRD to study coke deposition. The amorphous and organised form of coke was found on the surface of the catalyst. A platinum (Pt) on pure ceria (CeO2) supported by carbon black (CB) anode was synthesized using a combined process of precipitation and coimpregnation methods. The electrochemical activity of methanol oxidation reaction on synthesized Pt-CeO2/CB anodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry experimentation. To improve the anode property on Pt-CeO2/CB, the influence of particle morphology and particle size on anode properties was examined. The morphology and particle size of the pure CeO2 particles could be controlled by changing the preparation conditions. The anode properties (i.e., peak current density and onset potential for methanol oxidation) were improved by using nanosize CeO2 particles. This indicates that a larger surface area and higher activity on the surface of CeO2 improve the anode properties. The influence of particle morphology of CeO2 on anode properties was not very large. The onset potential for methanol oxidation reaction on Pt-CeO2/CB, which consisted of CeO2 with a high surface area, was shifted to a lower potential compared with that on the anodes, which consisted of CeO2 with a low surface area. The onset potential on Pt-CeO2/CB at 60 degrees C became similar to that on the commercially available Pt-Ru/carbon anode. We suggest that the rate-determining steps of the methanol oxidation reaction on Pt-CeO2/CB and commercially available Pt-Ru/carbon anodes are different, which accounts for the difference in performance. In the reaction mechanism on Pt-CeO2/CB, we conclude that the released oxygen species from the surface of CeO2 particles contribute to oxidation of adsorbed CO species on the Pt surface. This suggests that the anode performance of the Pt-CeO2/CB anode would lead to improvements in the operation of direct methanol fuel cells at 80 degrees C by the enhancement of diffusion of oxygen species created from the surface of nanosized CeO2 particles. Therefore, we conclude that fabrication of nanosized CeO2 with a high surface area is a key factor for development of a high-quality Pt-CeO2/CB anode in direct methanol fuel cells.

The introduction of mesoporous nanosize zirconia to the catalyst for methanol synthesis dedicates the nanosized catalyst and mesoporous duplicated properties. The catalyst bears the larger surface area, larger mesoporous volume and more uniform diameter, more surface metal atoms and oxygen vacancies than the catalyst prepared with the conventional coprecipitation method. The modification of microstructure and electronic effect could result in the change of the reduced chemical state and decrease of reducuction temperature of copper, donating the higher activity and methanol selectivity to the catalyst. The results of methanol synthesis demonstrate that the Cu+ is the optimum active site. Also, the interaction between the copper and zirconia shows the synergistic effect to fulfil the methanol synthesis.

Zr-Laponite pillared clays were prepared and used as supports of nickel catalysts for the methane reforming reaction with carbon dioxide to synthesis gas. The structural and textural characteristics of supports and catalysts were systematically examined by N-2 adsorption/desorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) techniques. The catalytic performance and carbon deposition were investigated. It is found that Zr-Laponite pillared clays are promising catalyst supports for carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The pore structure and surface properties of such supports greatly affect the catalytic behaviors of catalysts derived. Carbon deposition on catalysts was also affected by the property and structure of supports. The sintering of nickel metal and zirconia was another factor responsible for catalyst deactivation. This new-type nickel supported catalyst Ni/Zr-Laponite(8), with well-developed porosity, gave a higher initial conversion and a relatively long-term stability, and is therefore a promising catalyst for potential application to carbon dioxide reforming of methane to synthesis gas. The mesoporous nanoscale zircoina zeolite was firstly synthesized via solid state - Structure directing method without addition of any stabilizer. The sample bears lamellar or worm pore structures, relatively high surface area compared with that reported. The mesoporous nanosize structure can also resist higher calcination temperature. The introduction of above zirconia to the catalyst of methanol synthesis dedicates the nanosize particle size to the catalyst, which significantly changes the physical structure and electronic effect of the catalyst. The catalyst shows higher catalytic activity and selectivity to methanol. The active sites for methanol synthesis are demonstrated over various catalysts in this paper.

Indomethacin (IND) is the drug of choice for the closure of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in neonates. This paper describes a simple, sensitive, accurate and precise microscale HPLC method suitable for the analysis of IND in plasma of premature neonates. Samples were prepared by plasma protein precipitation with acetonitrile containing the methyl ester of IND as the internal standard (IS). Chromatography was performed on a Hypersil C-18 column. The mobile phase of methanol, water and orthophosphoric acid (70:29.5:0.5, v/v, respectively), was delivered at 1.5 mL/min and monitored at 270 nm. IND and the IS were eluted at 2.9 and 4.3 min, respectively. Calibrations were linear (r > 0.999) from 25 to 2500 mu g/L. The inter- and intra-day assay imprecision was less than 4.3% at 400-2000 mu g/L, and less than 22.1% at 35 mu g/L. Inaccuracy ranged from -6.0% to +1.0% from 35 to 2000 mu g/L. The absolute recovery of IND over this range was 93.0-113.3%. The IS was stable for at least 36 h when added to plasma at ambient temperature. This method is suitable for pharmacokinetic studies of IND and has potential for monitoring therapy in infants with PDA when a target therapeutic range for IND has been validated. Nanocrystalline zirconia was synthesized and used as catalyst support for methanol synthesis. The nanocrystallite particles have new physical and textural properties which are critical in determining the catalytic performance. Nanocrystalline zirconia changes the electronic structure and affects the metal and support interactions on the catalyst. leading to facile reduction. intimate interaction between copper and zirconia, more corner defects and oxygen vacancies on the surface of the catalyst. All these changes are beneficial to the reaction of methanol synthesis from hydrogenation of CO2. As a result. higher conversion of CO2 and selectivity of methanol are achieved compared to the catalysts prepared by conventional co-precipitation method. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ginger oil, obtained by steam distillation of the rhizome of Zingiber officinale Roscoe, is used in the beverage and fragrance industries. Ginger oil displays considerable compositional diversity, but is typically characterized by a high content of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, including zingiberene, arcurcumene, beta-bisabolene, and beta-sesquiphellandrene. Australian ginger oil has a reputation for possessing a particular lemony aroma, due to its high content of the isomers neral and geranial, often collectively referred to as citral. Fresh rhizomes of 17 clones of Australian ginger, including commercial cultivars and experimental tetraploid clones, were steam distilled 7 weeks post-harvest, and the resulting oils were analyzed by GC-MS. The essential oils of 16 of the 17 clones, including the tetraploid clones and their parent cultivar, were found to be of substantially similar composition. These oils were characterized by very high citral levels (51-71%) and relatively low levels of the sesquiterpene hydrocarbons typical of ginger oil. The citral levels of most of these oils exceeded those previously reported for ginger oils. The neral-to-geranial ratio was shown to be remarkably constant (0.61 +/- 0.01) across all 17 clones. One clone, the cultivar Jamaican, yielded oil with a substantially different composition, lower citral content and higher levels of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. Because this cultivar also contains significantly higher concentrations of pungent gingerols, it possesses unique aroma and flavor characteristics, which should be of commercial interest.

1. Three experiments were undertaken to determine the optimum inclusion rates of held peas, faba beans, chick peas and sweet lupins in broiler starter and finisher diets in amounts up to 360 g/kg. 2. In experiment A chickens in cages grown to 21 d on diets with field peas and faba beans gave better growth rate and feed efficiency than those with sweet lupins and chick peas. Growth rate and Food conversion ratio (FCR) improved with increasing amounts of faba beans in the diet while for chick peas growth rate and FCR declined. Digesta viscosity and excreta stickiness scores were much higher on diets with sweet lupins. Steam pelleting improved growth rate and FCR on all diets. 3. In experiment B birds were in cages and grown from 21 to 42 d. There were no differences between grain legumes (when combined for all inclusions) for growth rate, food intake or FCR. Viscosity was again much higher on the sweet lupin-based diets while the pancreas was significantly enlarged on the diets with chick peas, as observed previously in chickens grown to 21 d. Steam pelleting of diets gave a consistent and positive response for weight gain and FCR. 4. Experiment C was carried out in pens each holding 60 birds under semi-commercial conditions and grown to 4 2 d on starter and finisher diets with the same grain legumes as used previously but each at 2 rates of inclusion similar to those in commercial practice. Field peas at 200 to 300 g/kg and chick peas at 150 to 220 g/kg gave inferior growth to faba beans (150 to 180 g/kg) and sweet lupins (120 g/kg). 5. The results of these experiments allowed tentative recommendations to be made to industry for inclusion rates of these cultivars of the 4 grain legumes. These were: field peas 300 g/kg; faba beans 200 g/kg, chick peas 100 g/kg and sweet lupins
