Protective Iron Carbonate Films—Part 2: Chemical Removal by Dissolution in Single-Phase Aqueous Flow

This work studied the effect of the impurity iron and the alloying elements aluminium and zinc in single-phase substrate magnesium alloys on the corrosion resistance of the alloys after anodisation. It was found that increasing zinc content (0-2%) led to increased corrosion resistance of an anodised single-phase Mg-Zn alloy. The addition of Al lowered the corrosion resistance of an anodised commercial purity Mg-Al single-phase alloy, whereas the same addition was found to be beneficial to the corrosion resistance of an anodised high purity Mg-Al single-phase alloy. Heat-treatment made the substrate Mg-Al and Mg-Zn alloys more uniform and hence improved the corrosion resistance of the alloys after anodisation. The detrimental effect of iron impurity on corrosion performance of the unanodised substrate single-phase magnesium alloys was inherited by the anodised alloys. The corrosion resistance of the anodised Mg alloys was found to be closely correlated with the corrosion performance of the unanodised as-cast Mg alloys. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dendritic cells (DC) from distinct DC subsets are essential contributors to normal human immune responses. Despite this, reliable assays that enable DC to be counted precisely have been slow to evolve. We have now developed a new single-platform flow cytometric assay based on TruCOUN(TM) beads and the whole blood Lyse/No-Wash protocol that allows precise counting of the CD14(-) blood DC subsets: CD11c(+)CD16(-) DC, CD11c(+)CD16(+) DC, CD123(hi) DC, CD1c(+) DC and BDCA-3(+) DC. This assay requires 50 mul of whole blood; does not rely on a hematology blood analyser for the absolute DC counts; allows DC counting in EDTA samples 24 It after collection; and is suitable for cord blood and peripheral blood. The data is highly reproducible with intra-assay and inter-assay coefficients of variation less than 3% and 11%, respectively. This assay does not produce the DC-T lymphocyte conjugates that result in DC counting abnormalities in conventional gradient-density separation procedures. Using the TruCOUNT assay, we established that absolute blood DC counts reduce with age in healthy individuals. In preliminary studies, we found a significantly lower absolute blood CD11c(+)CD16(+) DC count in stage III/IV versus stage I/II breast carcinoma patients and a lower absolute blood CD123(hi) DC count in multiple myeloma patients, compared to age-matched controls. These data indicate that scientific progress in DC counting technology will lead to the global standardization of DC counting and allow clinically meaningful data to be obtained. This paper investigates the tidal effects on aeration conditions for plant root respiration in a tidal marsh. We extend the work of Ursino et al. ( 2004) by using a two-phase model for air and water flows in the marsh. Simulations have been conducted to examine directly the link between the airflow dynamics and the aeration condition in the marsh soil. The results show that the effects of entrapped air on water movement in the vadose zone are significant in certain circumstances. Single-phase models based on Richards' equation, which neglect such effects, may not be adequate for quantifying the aeration condition in tidal marsh. The optimal aeration condition, represented by the maximum of the integral magnitude of tidally advected air mass ( TAAM) flux, is found to occur near the tidal creek for the four soil textures simulated. This may explain the observation that some salt marsh plant species grow better near tidal creeks than in the inner marsh areas. Our analyses, based on the two-phase model and predicted TAAM flux magnitude, provide further insight into the positive feedback'' mechanism proposed by Ursino et al. ( 2004). That is, pioneer plants may grow successfully near the creek where the root aeration condition is optimal. The roots of the pioneer plants can soften and loosen the rhizosphere soil, which increases the evapotranspiration rate, the soil porosity, and absolute permeability and weakens the capillary effects. These, in turn, improve further the root aeration conditions and may lead to colonization by plants less resistant to anaerobic conditions.

A critical assessment is presented for the existing fluid flow models used for dense medium cyclones (DMCs) and hydrocyclones. As the present discussion indicates, the understanding of dense medium cyclone flow is still far from the complete. However, its similarity to the hydrocyclone provides a basis for improved understanding of fluid flow in DMCs. The complexity of fluid flow in DMCs is basically due to the existence of medium as well as the dominance of turbulent particle size and density effects on separation. Both the theoretical and experimental analysis is done with respect to two-phase motions and solid phase flow in hydrocyclones or DMCs. A detailed discussion is presented on the empirical, semiempirical, and the numerical models based upon both the vorticity-stream function approach and Navier-Stokes equations in their primitive variables and in cylindrical coordinates available in literature. The existing equations describing turbulence and multiphase flows in cyclone are also critically reviewed.

Single-phase Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3 powder was produced using conventional solid state reaction methods. Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3 ceramics with 2 wt % ZnO as sintering additive sintered at 1550 degreesC exhibited a dielectric constant of similar to32 and loss tangent of 5x10(-5) at 2 GHz. X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric measurements were used to characterize the structural and thermodynamic properties of the material. Ab initio electronic structure calculations were used to give insight into the unusual properties of Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3, as well as a similar and more widely used material Ba(Zn1/3Ta2/3)O-3. While both compounds have a hexagonal Bravais lattice, the P321 space group of Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3 is reduced from P (3) under bar m1 of Ba(Zn1/3Ta2/3)O-3 as a result of a distortion of oxygen away from the symmetric position between the Ta and Cd ions. Both of the compounds have a conduction band minimum and valence band maximum composed of mostly weakly itinerant Ta 5d and Zn 3d/Cd 4d levels, respectively. The covalent nature of the directional d-electron bonding in these high-Z oxides plays an important role in producing a more rigid lattice with higher melting points and enhanced phonon energies, and is suggested to play an important role in producing materials with a high dielectric constant and low microwave loss. Single phase (Zn,Fe)(1-x) O zincite solid solution samples have been prepared by high temperature equilibration in air and in reducing atmospheres, followed by quenching to room temperature. The Fe2+/Fe3+ concentrations in the samples have been determined using wet chemical and XPS techniques. Iron is found to be present in zincite predominantly in the form of Fe3+ ions. The transition from an equiaxed grain morphology to plate-like zincite crystals is shown to be associated with increasing Fe3+ concentration, increasing elongation in < 001 > of the hexagonal crystals and increasing anisotropic strain along the c-axis. The plate-like crystals are shown to contain planar defects and zincite polytypes at high iron concentrations.
