Utilization of salt affected wasteland by growing forage shrubs has enormous economic and environmental implication for developing countries like Pakistan, where approximately 6.3 million ha of the land is salt affected. Considering the importance of Atriplex and Maireana species, research has been conducted using their different species on the salt affected soils of Faisalabad. Most of Atriplex and Maireana species survived under the environmental conditions of Faisalabad and gave the good yield in the form of forage. Some of these species are woody and can be used for fuel purposes. Sixteen genotypes of Atriplex and Maireana were tested for their tolerance to waterlogging in order to identify halophytic fodder shrubs suitable for growth on secondary salt-affected and waterlogged farmland. The physiological and morphological responses of the species tested were typical of species with a generally poor tolerance to waterlogging. Despite this, some species (eg A. Amnicola) were surprisingly resistant, surviving up to five months of waterlogging at moderate salinity and high evapotranspirational demand. The most resistant species, A amnicola maintained higher transpiration rates, leaf water potentials and shoot extension rates than most other species during five weeks of waterlogging, and a return to control levels more quickly than other species after plots were drained. Although little morphological adaptation to waterlogged conditions was detected, a shallow and extensive lateral root system and the formation of many short aerenchymatous adventitious roots from procumbent branches appeared to advantage A. Amnicola in an environment highly heterogeneous in salinity and low in oxygen concentration. Shallow fibrous rooted species were quickly killed by waterlogging, although the procumbent branches of some individuals survived as clones if they developed adventitious roots.

Purpose A teaching model for trabeculectomy is described using pig eyes prepared in formalin. Method The model enables trainee surgeons to practice various aspects of tissue handling required for successful trabeculectomy including the construction of a fornix-based conjunctival flap, scleral flap with buried releasable sutures, and water-tight conjunctival closure. Results Exposure to the necessary skills required to perform trabeculectomy surgery can be improved by the use of wet laboratory practice. Conclusions Trabeculectomy surgery experience is becoming more limited as fewer procedures are being performed due to the efficacy of recent medications. Wet laboratories will become an increasingly important aspect of a comprehensive ophthalmology training programme.

We show that the mutant Huntington's disease (HD) protein (mhtt) specifically inhibits endocytosis in primary striatal neurons. Unexpectedly, mhtt does not inhibit clathrin-dependent endocytosis as was anticipated based on known interacting partners. Instead, inhibition occurs through a non-clathrin, caveolar-related pathway. Expression of mhtt inhibited internalization of BODIPY-lactosylceramide (LacCer), which is internalized by a caveolar-related mechanism. In contrast, endocytosis of Alexa Fluor 594-transferrin (Tfn) and epidermal growth factor, internalized through clathrin pathway, was unaffected by mhtt expression. Caveolin-1 (cav1), the major structural protein of caveolae binds cholesterol and is responsible for its trafficking inside cells. Mhtt interacts with cav-1 and caused a striking accumulation of intracellular cholesterol. Cholesterol accumulated in cultured neurons expressing mhtt in vitro and in brains of mhtt-expressing animals in vivo, and was observed after induction of mhtt expression in PC-12 cell lines. The accumulation occurred only when mhtt and cav1 were simultaneously expressed in cells. Knockdown of cav1 in mhtt-expressing neurons blocked cholesterol accumulation and restored LacCer endocytosis. Thus, mhtt and cav1 functionally interact to cause both cellular defects. These data provide the first direct link between mhtt and caveolar-related endocytosis and also suggest a possible mechanism for HD neurotoxicity where cholesterol homeostasis is perturbed.

We present an approach to parsing rehive clauses in Arabic in the tradition of the Paninian Grammar Frumework/2] which leads to deriving U common logicul form for equivalent sentences. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of resumptive pronouns in the retrieval of syntuctico-semantic relationships. The analysis arises from the development of a lexicalised dependency grammar for Arabic that has application for machine translation.
