The corrosion behaviour of pure magnesium in Hank's simulated body fluid (SBF) was investigated. It was found that the polarization of Mg in the SBF solution was similar to that in a NaCl aqueous solution. However, AC impedance analysis suggested that the detailed dissolution steps involved in the corrosion of Mg in the SBF could be different in terms of their rates or contributions to corrosion damage of Mg. Moreover, the corrosion rate of Mg in the SBF solution was found to be increasing with time and significant hydrogen evolution and alkalization of the SBF solution resulting from corrosion of Mg were measured in the study. The results suggested that after some proper measures are taken to retard corrosion reaction, Mg can be successfully employed as a degradable and absorbable implant material.

In-vitro calcification of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA)-based hydrogels in simulated body fluid (SBF) under a steady/batch system without agitation or stirring the solutions has been investigated. It was noted that the formation of calcium phosphate (CaP) deposits primarily proceeded through spontaneous precipitation. The CaP deposits were found both on the surface and inside the hydrogels. It appears that the effect of chemical structure or reducing the relative number of oxygen atoms in the copolymers on the degree of calcification was only important at the early stage of calcification. The morphology of the CaP deposits was observed to be spherical aggregates with a thickness of the CaP layer less than 0.5 mu m. Additionally, the CaP deposits were found to be poorly crystalline or to have nano-size crystals, or to exist mostly as an amorphous phase. Characterization of the CaP phases in the deposits revealed that the deposits were comprised mainly of whitlockite [Ca9MgH(PO4)(7)] type apatite and DCPD (CaHPO4 center dot 2H(2)O) as the precursors of hydroxyapatite [Ca-10(PO4)(6)(OH)(2)]. The presence of carbonate in the deposits was also detected during the calcification of PHEMA based hydrogels in SBF solution.

Since the landmark contributions of Homer Smith and co-workers in the 1930s there has been a considerable advance in our knowledge regarding the osmoregulatory strategy of elasmobranch fish. Smith recognised that urea was retained in the body fluids as part of the 'osmoregulatory ballast' of elasmobranch fish so that body fluid osmolality is raised to a level that is iso- or slightly hyper-osmotic to that of the surrounding medium. From studies at that time he also postulated that many marine dwelling elasmobranchs were not capable of adaptation to dilute environments. However, more recent investigations have demonstrated that, at least in some species, this may not be the case. Gradual acclimation of marine dwelling elasmobranchs to varying environmental salinities under laboratory conditions has demonstrated that these fish do have the capacity to acclimate to changes in salinity through independent regulation of Na+, Cl- and urea levels. This suggests that many of the presumed stenohaline marine elasmobranchs could in fact be described as partially euryhaline. The contributions of Thomas Thorson in the 1970s demonstrated the osmoregulatory strategy of a fully euryhaline elasmobranch, the bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas, and more recent investigations have examined the mechanisms behind this strategy in the euryhaline elasmobranch, Dasyatis sabina. Both partially euryhaline and fully euryhaline species utilise the same physiological processes to control urea, Na+ and Cl- levels within the body fluids. The role of the gills, kidney, liver, rectal gland and drinking process is discussed in relation to the endocrine control of urea, Na+ and Cl- levels as elasmobranchs acclimate to different environmental salinities. The development of solutions that prevent dehydration or promote adequate re-hydration play a vital role in preventing fatigue during exercise, however, the methods commonly used to assess the hydration ability of such solutions are invasive and often assess the components of absorption separately. This paper describes using a non-invasive deuterium tracer technique that assesses gastric emptying and intestinal absorption simultaneously to evaluate the uptake of water during rest and exercise. The kinetics of absorption are further examined by mathematical modelling of the data generated. For the rest group, 0.05 g/kg of body weight of deuterium, contained in gelatine capsules, was ingested with ordinary tap water and saliva samples were collected every 5 min for one hour while the subject remained seated. The deuterium was administered as above for the exercise group but sample collection was during one hour of exercise on a treadmill at 55% of the subject's maximum heart rate. The enrichment data for each subject were mathematically modelled and the parameters obtained were compared across groups using an independent samples t-test. Compared with the rest condition, the exercise group showed delayed absorption of water as indicated by significant differences for the modelling parameters t(2), t(1/2), maximum absorption rate and solution absorption amount at t(1). Labelling with a deuterium tracer is a good measure of the relative rate ingested fluids are absorbed by the body. Mathematical modelling of the data generates rates of maximum absorption and allows calculation of the percentage of the solution that is absorbed at any given time during the testing period. The bioactivity of three methacryloyloxyethyl phosphate (MOEP) grafted expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membranes with varying surface coverage as well as unmodified ePTFE was investigated through a series of in vitro tests: calcium phosphate (CaP) growth in simulated body fluid (SBF), serum protein adsorption, and a morphology and attachment study of human osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cells. The graft copolymers were prepared by means of gamma irradiation induced grafting and displayed various surface morphologies and wettabilities depending on the grafting conditions used. Unmodified ePTFE did not induce nucleation of Cal? minerals, whereas all the grafted membranes revealed the growth of Cal? minerals after 7 days immersion in SBF. The sample with lowest surface grafting yield (24% coverage), a smooth graft morphology and relatively high hydrophobicity (theta(adv) = 120 degrees, theta(rec) = 80 degrees) showed carbonated hydroxyapatite growth covering the surface. On the other hand, the samples with high surface grafting yield (76% and 100%), a globular graft morphology and hydrophilic surfaces (theta(adv) = 60 degrees and 80 degrees, theta(rec) = 25 degrees and 15 degrees, respectively) exhibited irregular growth of non-apatitic Cap minerals. Irreversibly adsorbed protein measured after a 1 h immersion in serum solution was quantified by the amount of nitrogen on the surface using XPS, as well as by weight increase. All grafted membranes adsorbed 3-6 times more protein than the unmodified membrane. The sample with the highest surface coverage adsorbed the most protein. Osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cells cultured for 3 h revealed significantly higher levels of cell attachment on all grafted membranes compared to unmodified ePTFE. Although the morphology of the cells was heterogeneous, in general, the higher grafted surfaces showed a much better cell morphology than both the low surface-grafted and the control unmodified sample. The suite of in vitro tests confirms that a judicious choice of grafted monomer such as the phosphate-containing methacrylate monomer (MOEP) significantly improves the bioactivity of ePTFE in vitro. The ingress of water and Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) into poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), and its co-polymers with tetrahydrofurduryl methacrylate (THFMA), loaded with either one of two model drugs, vitamin 1312 or aspirin, was studied by mass uptake over the temperature range 298-318 K. The polymers were studied as cylinders and were loaded with either 5 wt% or 10 wt% of the drugs. From DSC studies it was observed that vitamin B-12 behaved as a physical cross-linker restricting chain segmental mobility, and so had a small anti-plasticisation effect on PHEMA and the co-polymers rich in HEMA, but almost no effect on the T-g of co-polymers rich in THFMA. On the other hand, aspirin exhibited a plasticising effect on PHEMA and the copolymers. All of the polymers were found to absorb water and SBF according to a Fickian diffusion mechanism. The polymers were all found to swell to a greater extent in SBF than in water, which was attributed to the presence of Tris buffer in the SBF. The sorptions of the two penetrants were found to follow Fickian kinetics in all cases and the diffusion coefficients at 310 K for SBF were found to be smaller than those for water, except for the polymers containing aspirin where the diffusion coefficients were higher than for the other systems. For example, for sorption into PHEMA the diffusion coefficient for water was 1.41 X 10(-11) m(2)/s and for SBF was 0.79 x 10-11 m(2)/s, but in the presence of 5 wt% aspirin the corresponding values were 1.27 x 10(-1)1 m(2)/s and 1.25 x 10(-11) m(2)/s, respectively. The corresponding values for PHEMA loaded with 5 wt% B-12 were 1.25 x 10(-11) m(2)/s and 0.74 x 10(-11) m(2)/s, respectively.

A model drug release study on the ingress of water and Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) into poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (THFMA) and its copolymers with tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate (THFMA) loaded with vitamin B-12 was undertaken over the temperature range 298-318 K. The polymers were studied as cylinders and were loaded with either 5 or 10 wt-% of the drug. The drug release from the polymers was found to follow a Fickian diffusion mechanism in the early stages of the drug release, with higher normalized release rates at higher temperatures and higher drug loadings. The normalized release rates were also found to be higher for the SBF solution than for water. The copolymer composition was found to have a significant effect on the rate of release of the drug, with the rate falling rapidly between HEMA mole fractions of 1.0 and 0.8, but for lower mole fractions of HEMA the normalized release rate decreased more slowly. This behaviour followed the trend found for the changes in the equilibrium penetrant contents for the copolymers.

Highly ordered mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBGs) with different compositions have been synthesized by a combination of surfactant templating, sol-gel method and evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) processes. The texture properties and compositional homogeneity of MBGs have been characterized and compared with conventional bioactive glasses (BGs) synthesized in the absence of surfactants by evaporation method. The formation mechanism (pore - composition dependence) and compositional homogeneity in the case of MBG materials are different from those in conventional BGs. Unlike conventional sol-gel-derived BGs that shows a direct correlation between their composition and pore architecture, MBGs with different compositions may possess similar pore volume and uniformly distributed pore size when the same structure-directing agent is utilized. The framework of MBG is homogeneously distributed in composition at the nanoscale and the inorganic species generally exists in the form of amorphous phase. MBGs calcined at temperatures

This study examined the effect of soil type on burrowing behaviour and cocoon formation during aestivation in the green-striped burrowing frog, Cyclorana alboguttata (Gunther, 1867). Given a choice, frogs always chose to burrow in wet sand in preference to wet clay. Frogs buried themselves faster and dug deeper burrows in sandy soil. However, under my laboratory conditions, there was little difference in the pattern of soil drying between the two soil types. Frogs in both sand and clay soil experienced hydrating conditions for the first 3amonths and dehydrating conditions for the last 3amonths of the 6-month aestivation period, and cocoons were not formed until after 3amonths of aestivation. After 6amonths, there were more layers in the cocoons of frogs aestivating in sand than those aestivating in clay. Frogs were able to absorb water from sandy soil with water potentials greater than -400akPa, but lost water when placed on sand with a water potential of -1000akPa.

Objectives: In this paper, we present a unified electrodynamic heart model that permits simulations of the body surface potentials generated by the heart in motion. The inclusion of motion in the heart model significantly improves the accuracy of the simulated body surface potentials and therefore also the 12-lead ECG. Methods: The key step is to construct an electromechanical heart model. The cardiac excitation propagation is simulated by an electrical heart model, and the resulting cardiac active forces are used to calculate the ventricular wall motion based on a mechanical model. The source-field point relative position changes during heart systole and diastole. These can be obtained, and then used to calculate body surface ECG based on the electrical heart-torso model. Results: An electromechanical biventricular heart model is constructed and a standard 12-lead ECG is simulated. Compared with a simulated ECG based on the static electrical heart model, the simulated ECG based on the dynamic heart model is more accordant with a clinically recorded ECG, especially for the ST segment and T wave of a V1-V6 lead ECG. For slight-degree myocardial ischemia ECG simulation, the ST segment and T wave changes can be observed from the simulated ECG based on a dynamic heart model, while the ST segment and T wave of simulated ECG based on a static heart model is almost unchanged when compared with a normal ECG. Conclusions: This study confirms the importance of the mechanical factor in the ECG simulation. The dynamic heart model could provide more accurate ECG simulation, especially for myocardial ischemia or infarction simulation, since the main ECG changes occur at the ST segment and T wave, which correspond with cardiac systole and diastole phases.

The precipitation patterns and characteristics of calcium phosphate (CaP) phases deposited on HEMA-based hydrogels upon incubation in simulated body fluid (SBF-2) containing a protein (human serum albumin) have been investigated in relation to the calcification in an organic-free medium (SBF-1) and to that occurring after subcutaneous implantation in rats. In SBF-2, the deposits occurred exclusively as a peripheral layer on the surface of the hydrogels and consisted mainly of precipitated hydroxyapatite, a species deficient in calcium and hydroxyl ions, similarly to the deposits formed on the implanted hydrogels, where the deposited layer was thicker. In SBF-1, the deposits were mainly of brushite type. There was no evidence that albumin penetrated the interstices of hydrogels. As the X-ray diffraction patterns of the CaP deposits generated in SBF-2 showed a similar nature with those formed on the implanted hydrogel, it was concluded that the calcification in SBF-2 can mimic to a reliable extent the calcification process taking place in a biological environment.

The vaccines 1-2 and V4 are avirulent strains of Newcastle disease virus. Organ tropism of strain V4 has been determined and the virus has a predilection for the digestive tract. Tropism of strain 1-2 has not yet been determined. The objective of this study was to determine the distribution of strain 1-2 in various body organs and fluids following vaccination in comparison with V4. Four-week-old chickens were vaccinated by eye drop separately with these two avirulent strains. Virus isolation and the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction technique were employed to detect 1-2 and V4 viruses in various tissues and body fluids for 7 days following vaccination. Tissues from the respiratory tract showed earlier positive signals than tissues from other organs for chickens vaccinated with strain 1-2. Conversely, tissues from mainly digestive tract produced earlier positive signals than from respiratory tract and other organs from chickens vaccinated with strain V4. In early infection, strain 1-2 had preferential predilection for the respiratory tract and strain V4 for the digestive tract. Later after vaccination, other organs showed positive results from chickens vaccinated with both 1-2 and V4 strains. The differences in organ tropism observed in this study suggest that 1-2 may perform better than V4 as a live vaccine strain.

Soluble linear (non-cross-linked) poly(monoacryloxyethyl phosphate) (PMAEP) and poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphate) (PMOEP) were successfully synthesized through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated polymerization and by keeping the molecular weight below 20 K. Above this molecular weight, insoluble (cross-linked) polymers were observed, postulated to be due to residual diene (cross-linkable) monomers formed during purification of the monomers, MOEP and MAEP. Block copolymers consisting of PMAEP or PMOEP and poly(2-(acetoacetoxy) ethyl methacrylate) (PAAEMA) were successfully prepared and were immobilized on aminated slides. Simulated body fluid studies revealed that calcium phosphate (CaP) minerals formed on both the soluble polymers and the cross-linked gels were very similar. Both the PMAEP polymers and the PMOEP gel showed a CaP layer most probably brushite or monetite based on the Ca/P ratios. A secondary CaP mineral growth with a typical hydroxyapatite (HAP) globular morphology was found on the PMOEP gel. The soluble PMOEP film formed carbonated HAP according to Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Block copolymers attached to aminated slides showed only patchy mineralization, possibly due to the ionic interaction of negatively charged phosphate groups and protonated amines.

We show how to efficiently simulate a quantum many-body system with tree structure when its entanglement (Schmidt number) is small for any bipartite split along an edge of the tree. As an application, we show that any one-way quantum computation on a tree graph can be efficiently simulated with a classical computer.

Purpose: The present study was conducted to examine the impact of acute weight loss on repeat 2000-m rowing ergometer performance during a simulated multiday regatta. and to compare two different body mass management strategies between races. Methods: Competitive rowers (N = 16) were assigned to either a control (CON), partial recovery (RECpartial), or complete recovery (RECcomplete) group. Volunteers completed four trials, each separated by 48 h. No weight restrictions were imposed for the first trial. Thereafter, athletes in RECpartial and RECcomplete were required to reduce their body mass by 4% in the 24 h before trial 2, again reaching this body mass before the final two trials. No weight restrictions were imposed on CON. Aggressive nutritional recovery strategies were used in the 2 h following weigh-in for all athletes. These strategies were maintained for the 12-16 h following racing for RECcomplete with the aim of restoring at least three quarters of the original 4% body mass loss. Postrace recovery strategies were less aggressive in RECpartial; volunteers were encouraged to restore no more than half of their initial 4% body mass loss. Results: Acute weight loss increased time to complete the first at-weight performance trial by a small margin (mean 3.0, 95% CI -0.3 to 6.3 s, P = 0.07) when compared with the CON response. This effect decreased when sustained for several day,. Aggressive postrace recovery strategies tended to eliminate the effect of acute Weight loss on subsequent performance. Conclusion: Acute weight loss resulted in a small performance compromise that was reduced or eliminated when repeated over several days. Athletes should be encouraged to maximize recovery in the 12-16 h following racing when attempting to optimize subsequent performance.
