This paper investigates the reflection characteristics of structural or guided waves in rods at a solid/liquid interface. Structural waves, whose wavelengths are much larger than the diameter of the rod, are described in a first approximation by classical one-dimensional wave theory. The reflection characteristics of such waves at a solid/liquid (melting) interface has been reported by two different ultrasonic measurement techniques: first, measuring the fast regression rate of a melting interface during the burning of metal rod samples in an oxygen-enriched environment, and second, monitoring the propagation of the solid/liquid interface during the slow melting and solidification of a rod sample in a furnace. The second work clearly shows that the major reflection occurs from the solid/liquid interface and not the liquid/gas interface as predicted by plane longitudinal wave reflectivity theory. The present work confirms this observation by reporting on the results of some specially designed experiments to identify the main interface of reflection for structural waves in rods. Hence, it helps in explaining the fundamental discrepancy between the reflection characteristics at a solid/liquid interface between low frequency structural waves and high frequency bulk waves, and confirms that the detected echo within a burning metallic rod clearly represents a reflection from the solid/liquid interface. OBJECTIVES We sought to determine whether disturbances of myocardial contractility and reflectivity could be detected in diabetic patients without overt heart disease and whether these changes were independent and incremental to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). BACKGROUND Left ventricular (LV) dysfunction is associated with diabetes mellitus, but LVH is common in this population and the relationship between diabetic LV dysfunction and LVH is unclear. METHODS We studied 186 patients with normal ejection fraction and no evidence of CAD: 48 with diabetes mellitus only (DM group), 45 with LVH only (LVH group), 45 with both diabetes and LVH (DH group), and 48 normal controls. Peak strain and strain rate of six walls in apical four-chamber, long-axis, and two-chamber views were evaluated and averaged for each patient. Calibrated integrated backscatter (113) was assessed by comparison of the septal or posterior wall with pericardial IB intensity. RESULTS All patient groups (DM, DH, LVH) showed reduced systolic function compared with controls, evidenced by lower peak strain (p < 0.001) and strain rate (p = 0.005). Calibrated 113, signifying myocardial reflectivity, was greater in each patient group than in controls (p < 0.05). Peak strain and strain rate were significantly lower in the DH group than in those in the DM alone (p < 0.03) or LVH alone (p = 0.01) groups. CONCLUSIONS Diabetic patients without overt heart disease demonstrate evidence of systolic dysfunction and increased myocardial reflectivity. Although these changes are similar to those caused by LVH, they are independent and incremental to the effects of LVH. (C) 2003 by the American College of Cardiology Foundation.

A new design of an optical resonator for generation of single-photon pulses is proposed. The resonator is made of a cylindrical or spherical piece of a polymer squeezed between two flat dielectric mirrors. The mode characteristics of this resonator are calculated numerically. The numerical analysis is backed by a physical explanation. The decay time and the mode volume of the fundamental mode are sufficient for achieving more than 96% probability of generating a single-photon in a single-mode. The corresponding requirement for the reflectivity of the mirrors (similar to 99.9%) and the losses in the polymer ( 100 dB/m) are quite modest. The resonator is suitable for single-photon generation based on optical pumping of a single quantum system such as an organic molecule, a diamond nanocrystal, or a semiconductor quantum dot if they are imbedded in the polymer. The paper describes a system for measuring radiation efficiency of a small antenna operating alone or in the presence of objects similar to those as in an actual service. The system applies the direct approach to determining the antenna efficiency by measuring the radiated field over the entire sphere surrounding the tested antenna. In order to overcome problems associated with the conventional measuring equipment, the antenna under test is equipped with a miniature built-in VCO signal generator and supported by a low reflectivity dielectric positioner. The positioner is of sufficient size and strength to hold a human head phantom to investigate changes in radiation characteristics when the antenna operates in the presence of a human operator.
