We demonstrate tomographic imaging of the refractive index of turbid media using bifocal optical coherence refractometry (BOCR). The technique, which is a variant of optical coherence tomography, is based on the measurement of the optical pathlength difference between two foci simultaneously present in a medium of interest. We describe a new method to axially shift the bifocal optical pathlength that avoids the need to physically relocate the objective lens or the sample during an axial scan, and present an experimental realization based on an adaptive liquid-crystal lens. We present experimental results, including video clips, which demonstrate refractive index tomography of a range of turbid liquid phantoms, as well as of human skin in vivo.

The optical forces in optical tweezers can be robustly modeled over a broad range of parameters using generalsed Lorenz–Mie theory. We describe the procedure, and show how the combination of experimental measurement of properties of the trap coupled with computational modeling, can allow unknown parameters of the particle—in this case, the refractive index—to be determined.

Optically transparent, mesostructured titanium dioxide thin films were fabricated using an amphiphilic poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymer template in combination with retarded hydrolysis of a titanium isopropoxide precursor. Prior to calcination, the films displayed a stable hexagonal mesophase and high refractive indices (1.5 to 1.6) relative to mesostructured silica (1.43). After calcination, the hexagonal mesophase was retained with surface areas >300 m2 g-1. The dye Rhodamine 6G (commonly used as a laser dye) was incorporated into the copolymer micelle during the templating process. In this way, novel dye-doped mesostructured titanium dioxide films were synthesised. The copolymer not only directs the film structure, but also provides a solubilizing environment suitable for sustaining a high monomer-to-aggregate ratio at elevated dye concentrations. The dye-doped films displayed optical thresholdlike behaviour characteristic of amplified spontaneous emission. Soft lithography was successfully applied to micropattern the dye-doped films. These results pave the way for the fabrication and demonstration of novel microlaser structures and other active optical structures. This new, high-refractive index, mesostructured, dye-doped material could also find applications in areas such as optical coatings, displays and integrated photonic devices.

The modification of the statistical properties of vacuum fluctuations, via quadrature squeezing, can dramatically reduce the absorptive and dispersive properties of two-level atoms. We show that for some range of parameter values the system exhibits zero absorption accompanied by zero dispersion of the probe field. This complete transparency is attributed to the coherent population oscillations induced by the squeezed vacuum.

An extension of the Adachi model with the adjustable broadening function, instead of the Lorentzian one, is employed to model the optical constants of GaP, InP, and InAs. Adjustable broadening is modeled by replacing the damping constant with the frequency-dependent expression. The improved flexibility of the model enables achieving an excellent agreement with the experimental data. The relative rms errors obtained for the refractive index equal 1.2% for GaP, 1.0% for InP, and 1.6% for InAs. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(99)05807-7].

The extension of Adachi's model with a Gaussian-like broadening function, in place of Lorentzian, is used to model the optical dielectric function of the alloy AlxGa1-xAs. Gaussian-like broadening is accomplished by replacing the damping constant in the Lorentzian line shape with a frequency dependent expression. In this way, the comparative simplicity of the analytic formulas of the model is preserved, while the accuracy becomes comparable to that of more intricate models, and/or models with significantly more parameters. The employed model accurately describes the optical dielectric function in the spectral range from 1.5 to 6.0 eV within the entire alloy composition range. The relative rms error obtained for the refractive index is below 2.2% for all compositions. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(99)00512-5].

We derive a nonlinear wave equation for a signal beam which is coupled to a pump beam by two-wave-mixing in a photorefractive crystal. This equation describes self-focusing of the signal beam. We compare two-wave-mixing induced spatial self-focusing of single-pass experiments in a diffusion-type photorefractive crystal and of a photorefractive oscillator using the same crystal. We observe that the nonlinear refractive index change in the oscillator is decreased while increasing resonator losses.

The thermally induced optical nonlinearity in a chlorophyll ethanol solution is examined. A theory is presented which shows good agreement with experiment. The theory models an optically thick but physically thin medium whose only heat transport mechanism is conduction. An average nz was found for the medium which corresponds well with previous results but the thermal medium is shown to be fundamentally different from a Kerr medium.

Typical disturbances of biological environment such as background scatter and refractive index variations have little effect on the size-dependent scattering property of highly refractive nanocrystals, which are potentially attractive optical labels. We report on what is to our knowledge the first investigation of these scattering optical labels, and their sizing, in particular, by imaging at subvideo frame rates and analyzing samples of diamond nanocrystals deposited on a glass substrate in air and in a matrix of weakly scattering polymer. The brightness of a diffraction-limited spot appears to serve as a reliable measure of the particle size in the Rayleigh scattering limit. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Manipulation of micrometer sized particles with optical tweezers can be precisely modeled with electrodynamic theory using Mie's solution for spherical particles or the T-matrix method for more complex objects. We model optical tweezers for a wide range of parameters including size, relative refractive index and objective numerical aperture. We present the resulting landscapes of the trap stiffness and maximum applicable trapping force in the parameter space. These landscapes give a detailed insight into the requirements and possibilities of optical trapping and provide detailed information on trapping of nanometer sized particles or trapping of high index particles like diamond.

This paper describes the background and current status of an OMERACT facilitated effort to improve the consistency of adverse event reporting in rheumatology clinical trials, The overall goal is the development of an adverse event assessment tool that would provide a basis for use of common terminology and improve the consistency of reporting severity of side effects within rheumatology clinical trials and during postmarketing surveillance. The resulting Rheumatology Common Toxicity Criteria Index encompassed the following organ systems: allergic/immunologic, cardiac, ENT, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, neuropsychiatric, ophthalmologic, pulmonary and skin/integument. Before this tool is widely accepted, its validity, consistency, and feasibility need to be assessed in clinical trials.

We investigated plasma hormone profiles of corticosterone and testosterone in immature hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) in response to a capture stress protocol. Further, we examined whether sex and body condition were covariates associated with variation in the adrenocortical response of immature turtles. Hawksbill turtles responded to the capture stress protocol by significantly increasing plasma levels of corticosterone over a 5 h period. There was no significant sex difference in the corticosterone stress response of immature turtles. Plasma testosterone profiles, while significantly different between the sexes, did not exhibit a significant change during the 5 h capture stress protocol. An index of body condition was not significantly associated with a turtle's capacity to produce plasma corticosterone both prior to and during exposure to the capture stress protocol. In summary, while immature hawksbill turtles exhibited an adrenocortical response to a capture stress protocol, neither their sex nor body condition was responsible for variation in endocrine responses. This lack of interaction between the adrenocortical response and these internal factors suggests that the inactive reproductive- and the current energetic- status of these immature turtles are important factors, that could influence plasma hormone profiles during stress. AIM: To establish a simple method to quantify muscle/fat constituents in cervical muscles of asymptomatic women using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and to determine whether there is an age effect within a defined age range. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI of the upper cervical spine was performed for 42 asymptomatic women aged 18-45 years. The muscle and fat signal intensities on axial spin echo T1-weighted images were quantitatively classified by taking a ratio of the pixel intensity profiles of muscle against those of intermuscular fat for the rectus capitis posterior major and minor and inferior obliquus capitis muscles bilaterally. Inter- and intra-examiner agreement was scrutinized. RESULTS: The average relative values of fat within the upper cervical musculature compared with intermuscular fat indicated that there were only slight variations in indices between the three sets of muscles. There was no significant correlation between age and fat indices. There were significant differences for the relative fat within the muscle compared with intermuscular fat and body mass index for the right rectus capitis posterior major and right and left inferior obliquus capitis muscles (p = 0.032). Intraclass correlation coefficients for intraobserver agreement ranged from 0.94 to 0.98. Inter-rater agreement of the measurements ranged from 0.75 to 0.97. CONCLUSION: A quantitative measure of muscle/fat constituents has been developed, and results of this study indicate that relative fatty infiltration is not a feature of age in the upper cervical extensor muscles of women aged 18-45 years.
