Dynamic rheological behaviour of starch-honey systems was studied using a strain-controlled rheometer. A dynamic temperature (30-130 degreesC) ramp test was used at 10 rad s(-1) frequency, 1% strain, 2 degreesC min(-1) ramp rate, 25 mm parallel plate, and 1.5 min gap, using Wheaten cornflour(TM) and five honeys to generate 25 formulations (0.34-0.80 g water/g dry starch). G', G, and eta* increased upon gelatinisation, and they reduced as the honey content was increased. For all the formulations, G' was higher than G, and tan 6 was generally less than 1.0. Key gelatinisation characterising temperatures (onset, peak and end) ranged from 96.0 to 122.3 degreesC, but did not vary much (CV < 5%) for each honey irrespective of the concentration. The influence of water, fructose and glucose, singly and in combination, on gelatinisation indices (temperature and rheological parameters) was investigated. An exponential equation was employed to describe the relationship, and relevant parameters were obtained. The consequences of the observations in the study are discussed particularly as they relate to extrusion of such systems, and possible interactions between fructose and glucose in the starch-honey systems. The potential energy surfaces for the reactions of atomic oxygen in its ground electronic state, O(P-3), with the olefins: CF2=CCl2 and CF2=CF - CF3, have been characterized using ab initio molecular orbital calculations. Geometry optimization and vibrational frequency calculations were performed for reactants, transition states and products at the MP2 and QCISD levels of theory using the 6-31G(d) basis set. This database was then used to calculate the rate constants by means of Transition-State-Theory. To obtain a better reference and to test the reliability of the activation barriers we have also carried out computations using the CCSD(T)(fc)/6-311Gdagger, MP4(SDQ)(fc)/CBSB4 and MP2(fc)/CBSB3 single point energy calculations at both of the above levels of theory, as well as with the composite CBS-RAD procedure ( P. M. Mayer, C. J. Parkinson, D. M. Smith and L. Radom, J. Chem. Phys., 1998, 108, 604) and a modi. cation of this approach, called: CBS-RAD( MP2, MP2). It was found that the kinetic parameters obtained in this work particularly with the CBS-RAD ( MP2, MP2) procedure are in reasonable agreement with the experimental values. For both reactions it is found that the channels leading to the olefin double-bond addition predominates with respect to any other reaction pathway. However, on account of the different substituents in the alkenes we have located, at all levels of theory, two transition states for each reaction. Moreover, we have found that, for the reactions studied, a correlation exists between the activation energies and the electronic structure of the transition states which can explain the influence of the substituent effect on the reactivity of the halo-olefins.

We sought to determine if the velocity of an acute bout of eccentric contractions influenced the duration and severity of several common indirect markers of muscle damage. Subjects performed 36 maximal fast (FST, n=8: 3.14 rad center dot s(-1)) or slow (SLW, n=7: 0.52 rad center dot s(-1)) velocity isokinetic eccentric contractions with the elbow flexors of the non-dominant arm. Muscle soreness, limb girth, plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity, isometric torque and concentric and eccentric torque at 0.52 and 3.14 rad center dot s(-1) were assessed prior to and for several days following the eccentric bout. Peak plasma CK activity was similar in SLW (4030 +/- 1029 U center dot l(-1)) and FST (5864 +/- 2664 U center dot l(-1)) groups, (p > 0.05). Both groups experienced similar decrement in all strength variables during the 48 hr following the eccentric bout. However, recovery occurred more rapidly in the FST group during eccentric (0.52 and 3.14 rad center dot s(-1)) and concentric (3.14 rad center dot s(-1)) post-testing. The severity of muscle soreness was similar in both groups. However, the FST group experienced peak muscle soreness 48 hr later than the SLW group (24 hr vs. 72 hr). The SLW group experienced a greater increase in upper arm girth than the FST group 20 min, 24 hr and 96 hr following the eccentric exercise bout. The contraction velocity of an acute bout of eccentric exercise differentially influences the magnitude and time course of several indirect markers of muscle damage.

Pulse oximetry is commonly used as an arterial blood oxygen saturation (SaO(2)) measure. However, its other serial output, the photoplethysmography (PPG) signal, is not as well studied. Raw PPG signals can be used to estimate cardiovascular measures like pulse transit time (PTT) and possibly heart rate (HR). These timing-related measurements are heavily dependent on the minimal variability in phase delay of the PPG signals. Masimo SET (R) Rad-9 (TM) and Novametrix Oxypleth oximeters were investigated for their PPG phase characteristics on nine healthy adults. To facilitate comparison, PPG signals were acquired from fingers on the same hand in a random fashion. Results showed that mean PTT variations acquired from the Masimo oximeter (37.89 ms) were much greater than the Novametrix (5.66 ms). Documented evidence suggests that I ms variation in PTT is equivalent to I mmHg change in blood pressure. Moreover, the PTT trend derived from the Masimo oximeter can be mistaken as obstructive sleep apnoeas based on the known criteria. HR comparison was evaluated against estimates attained from an electrocardiogram (ECG). Novametrix differed from ECG by 0.71 +/- 0.58% (p < 0.05) while Masimo differed by 4.51 +/- 3.66% (p > 0.05). Modem oximeters can be attractive for their improved SaO(2) measurement. However, using raw PPG signals obtained directly from these oximeters for timing-related measurements warrants further investigations.

Since its introduction, pulse oximetry has become a conventional clinical measure. Besides being arterial blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) measure, pulse oximeters can be used for other cardiovascular measurements, like heart rate (HR) estimations, derived from its photo plethysmographic (PPG) signals. The temporal coherence of the PPG signals and thereby HR estimates are heavily dependent on its minimal phase variability. A Masimo SET Rad-9TM, Novametrix Oxypleth and a custom designed PPG system were investigated for their relative phase variation. R-R intervals from electro-cardiogram (ECG) were recorded concurrently as reference. PPG signals obtained from the 3 systems were evaluated by comparing their respective beat-to-beat (B-B) intervals with the corresponding R-R estimates during a static test. For their relative B-B comparison to the ECG, Novametrix system differed 0.680.52% (p
