The role of polarisation in late time complex resonance based target identification is investigated numerically for the case of an L-shaped wire. While repeated extraction of the resonances for varying polarisation allows for better signal-to-noise immunity, it is also found that there are preferred polarisations for each complex resonance. The first few of these polarisations are extracted for the sample target.

The literature dealing with the electrochemical corrosion characteristics of unalloyed copper in aqueous chloride media is examined. The enormous quantity of polarisation and mixed/corrosion potential data that has been made available in the literature over the last 50 years has been compiled and discussed in a comprehensive review. For a wide range of electrode geometries, the importance of the chloride ion and the mass transport of anodic corrosion products on the corrosion behaviour of copper are made clear for both freshly polished and 'filmed' surfaces. Since the early 1980s, Australian governments have embraced neoliberal policies as a means of improving the nation’s global economic competitiveness. The impacts of such policies in regional areas have been quite profound, leading to socio-economic polarisation, population loss, and the growth of anti-globalisation sentiments. In this paper, we examine the process of regional restructuring that arises from this trajectory in Australia, and examine current policy responses to change under the neoliberal regime. We argue that while many such responses are individualistic, and based upon policies of personal responsibility, self-advancement and entrepreneurship, others are imbued with the language of community, social capital and collective action. The existence of individualism and community within the same policy agenda may appear contradictory, yet it is suggested that neoliberalism brings together these two opposing discourses through a process of what Nikolas Rose calls ‘governing through community’. We explore how neoliberalism underpins community approaches to regional development in Australia, arguing that such strategies do little to counter the negative forces of globalisation in non-metropolitan parts of the country.

An aluminum-alloyed coating was applied onto the surface of magnesium alloy AZ91D. The coating formed in aluminium powder at 420 degrees C is rich in the beta (Mg17Al12) phase. Polarisation curve, AC impedance, salt immersion and salt spray were carried out to investigate the corrosion behaviour and assess the corrosion performance of the coated magnesium alloy. It was found that a coated AZ91D specimen was much more corrosion resistant and harder than an uncoated one. The improved corrosion resistance was mainly ascribed to the high volume fraction of beta phase in the coating. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel apparatus, high-pressure/high-temperature nickel flow loop, was constructed to study the effect of the flow on the rate of erosion-corrosion of mild steel in hot caustic. It has been successfully used to measure the corrosion rate of 1020 steel in 2.75 M NaOH solution at a temperature of 160 degrees C and velocities of 0.32 and 2.5 m/s. In situ electrochemical methods were used to measure the corrosion rate such as the potentiodynamic sweep, the polarization resistance method, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Also used were the weight-loss method and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Eight electrodes/coupons were used to monitor the metal loss rate, four were placed at the low velocity section, while the other four were placed in the high velocity section. The first three coupons in each section were placed within the disturbed flow region, while the fourth was placed in a fully developed flow region. The corrosion rate of the coupons in the high velocity section was generally higher than that of the coupons in the low velocity section. One coupon in the disturbed flow region had a significantly higher corrosion rate than the others. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Corrosion rates of 1020 steel in 2.75 M NaOH solution at a temperature of 160 degrees C and velocities of 0.32 and 2.5 m/s were studied. The focus was on the effect of the acid cleaning which was performed by using strong, inhibited sulphuric acid in between the exposures to caustic. In situ electrochemical methods were used to measure the corrosion rate such as the potentiodynamic sweep and the polarization resistance method. Also used were the weight-loss method and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Eight electrodes/coupons were used to monitor the metal loss rate, four were placed at the low velocity section, while the other four were placed in the high velocity section of a high temperature flow. The first three coupons in each section were placed within the disturbed flow region, while the fourth was placed in a fully developed flow region. During the exposure of mild steel to the inhibited acid, following the first caustic period, the corrosion rate increased significantly to between 3 and 10mm/y with a few electrodes experiencing as high as 50 mm/y. The second caustic period following the acidic period typically started with very high corrosion rates (20-80 mm/y). The length of this corrosion period was typically 2-3 h with a few exceptions when the high corrosion period lasted 7-10 h. Following the very high corrosion rates experienced at the beginning of the second caustic period, the corrosion rates were reduced sharply (as the corrosion potential increased) to nearly the same levels as those observed during the passive part of the first caustic period. The design of an antenna that combines a radial line slot array and a circular patch to operate as a dual band (2.4/5.2 GHz) antenna at the access point of a WLAN is presented. The design has been accomplished using commercially available Ansoft HFSS and in-house developed software. The designed antenna shows good performance in terms of return losses, radiation pattern and circular polarization in the two, 2.4 and 5.2 GHz, frequency bands. Due to its good electrical performance and a relatively low profile and low developmental cost, it should be found attractive for use as an access point antenna for dual band operation.

The design of a dual-band 2.45/5.2 GHz antenna for an access point of a wireless local area network (WLAN) is presented. The proposed antenna is formed by an assembly of a radial line slot array (RLSA) operating at 2.4 GHz and a microstrip patch working at 5.2 GHz. The design of this antenna system is accomplished using commercially available finite element software, high frequency structure simulator (HFSS), of Ansoft. The performance of the designed antenna is assessed in terms of return loss (RL), radiation pattern and polarization purity in the two investigated frequency bands.

We present a technique to measure the viscosity of microscopic volumes of liquid using rotating optical tweezers. The technique can be used when only microlitre (or less) sample volumes are available, for example biological or medical samples, or to make local measurements in complicated micro-structures such as cells. The rotation of the optical tweezers is achieved using the polarisation of the trapping light to rotate a trapped birefringent spherical crystal, called vaterite. Transfer of angular momentum from a circularly polarised beam to the particle causes the rotation. The transmitted light can then be analysed to determine the applied torque to the particle and its rotation rate. The applied torque is determined from the change in the circular polarisation of the beam caused by the vaterite and the rotation rate is used to find the viscous drag on the rotating spherical particle. The viscosity of the surrounding liquid can then be determined. Using this technique we measured the viscosity of liquids at room temperature, which agree well with tabulated values. We also study the local heating effects due to absorption of the trapping laser beam. We report heating of 50-70 K/W in the region of liquid surrounding the particle.
