We obtain the finite-temperature unconditional master equation of the density matrix for two coupled quantum dots (CQD's) when one dot is subjected to a measurement of its electron occupation number using a point contact (PC). To determine how the CQD system state depends on the actual current through the PC device, we use the so-called quantum trajectory method to derive the zero-temperature conditional master equation. We first treat the electron tunneling through the PC barrier as a classical stochastic point process (a quantum-jump model). Then we show explicitly that our results can be extended to the quantum-diffusive limit when the average electron tunneling rate is very large compared to the extra change of the tunneling rate due to the presence of the electron in the dot closer to the PC. We find that in both quantum-jump and quantum-diffusive cases, the conditional dynamics of the CQD system can be described by the stochastic Schrodinger equations for its conditioned state vector if and only if the information carried away from the CQD system by the PC reservoirs can be recovered by the perfect detection of the measurements.

To translate and transfer solution data between two totally different meshes (i.e. mesh 1 and mesh 2), a consistent point-searching algorithm for solution interpolation in unstructured meshes consisting of 4-node bilinear quadrilateral elements is presented in this paper. The proposed algorithm has the following significant advantages: (1) The use of a point-searching strategy allows a point in one mesh to be accurately related to an element (containing this point) in another mesh. Thus, to translate/transfer the solution of any particular point from mesh 2 td mesh 1, only one element in mesh 2 needs to be inversely mapped. This certainly minimizes the number of elements, to which the inverse mapping is applied. In this regard, the present algorithm is very effective and efficient. (2) Analytical solutions to the local co ordinates of any point in a four-node quadrilateral element, which are derived in a rigorous mathematical manner in the context of this paper, make it possible to carry out an inverse mapping process very effectively and efficiently. (3) The use of consistent interpolation enables the interpolated solution to be compatible with an original solution and, therefore guarantees the interpolated solution of extremely high accuracy. After the mathematical formulations of the algorithm are presented, the algorithm is tested and validated through a challenging problem. The related results from the test problem have demonstrated the generality, accuracy, effectiveness, efficiency and robustness of the proposed consistent point-searching algorithm. We use the finite element method to simulate the rock alteration and metamorphic process in hydrothermal systems. In particular, we consider the fluid-rock interaction problems in pore-fluid saturated porous rocks. Since the fluid rock interaction takes place at the contact interface between the pore-fluid and solid minerals, it is governed by the chemical reaction which usually takes place very slowly at this contact interface, from the geochemical point of view. Due to the relative slowness of the rate of the chemical reaction to the velocity of the pore-fluid flow in the hydrothermal system to be considered, there exists a retardation zone, in which the conventional static theory in geochemistry does not hold true. Since this issue is often overlooked by some purely numerical modellers, it is emphasized in this paper. The related results from a typical rock alteration and metamorphic problem in a hydrothermal system have shown not only the detailed rock alteration and metamorphic process, but also the size of the retardation zone in the hydrothermal system. A feasibility study was carried out to test the hypothesis that, for an effective telehealth service, a full-time coordinator is required to act as a single point of contact for consultation requests. By shifting the responsibility for telepaediatrics from the referrer to the provider, the telehealth process becomes equally (or more) attractive as the conventional alternative. Preliminary results showed that, within six months, telepaediatric activity increased to an average of 8 h per month. Not only did certain health services become more accessible to children and their families in remote areas of Queensland, but significant savings were also made. At least 12 patient transfers were avoided to and from the tertiary facility, with an estimated minimum saving of $18,000 to the health-care provider.

A new cloud-point extraction and preconcentration method, using a cationic, surfactant, Aliquat-336 (tricaprylyl-methy;ammonium chloride), his-been developed for the determination of cyanobacterial toxins, microcystins, in natural waters. Sodium sulfate was used to induce phase separation at 25 degreesC. The phase behavior of Aliquat-336 with respect to concentration of Na2SO4 was studied. The cloud-point system revealed a very high phase volume ratio compared to other established systems of nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactants: At pH 6-7, it showed an outstanding selectivity in ahalyte extraction for anionic species. Only MC-LR and MC-YR, which are known to be predominantly anionic, were extracted (with averaged recoveries of 113.9 +/- 9% and 87.1 +/- 7%, respectively). MC-RR, which is likely to be amphoteric at the above pH range, was. not cle tectable in.the extract. Coupled to HPLC/UV separation and detection, the cloud-point extraction method (with 2.5 mM Aliquat-336 and 75 mM Na2SO4 at 25 degreesC) offered detection limits of 150 +/- 7 and 470 +/- 72 pg/mL for MC-LR and MC-YR, respectively, in 25 mL of deionized water. Repeatability of the method was 7.6% for MC-LR and 7.3% for MC-YR: The cloud-point extraction process can be. completed within 10-15 min with no cleanup steps required. Applicability of the new method to the determination of microcystins in real samples was demonstrated using natural surface waters, collected from a local river and a local duck pond spiked with realistic. concentrations of microcystins. Effects of salinity and organic matter (TOC) content in the water sample on the extraction efficiency were also studied.

Traditional methods of R&D management are no longer sufficient for embracing innovations and leveraging complex new technologies to fully integrated positions in established systems. This paper presents the view that the technology integration process is a result of fundamental interactions embedded in inter-organisational activities. Emerging industries, high technology companies and knowledge intensive organisations owe a large part of their viability to complex networks of inter-organisational interactions and relationships. R&D organisations are the gatekeepers in the technology integration process with their initial sanction and motivation to develop technologies providing the first point of entry. Networks rely on the activities of stakeholders to provide the foundations of collaborative R&D activities, business-to-business marketing and strategic alliances. Such complex inter-organisational interactions and relationships influence value creation and organisational goals as stakeholders seek to gain investment opportunities. A theoretical model is developed here that contributes to our understanding of technology integration (adoption) as a dynamic process, which is simultaneously structured and enacted through the activities of stakeholders and organisations in complex inter-organisational networks of sanction and integration.

Although specific phobias are among the most prevalent and most treatable of the anxiety disorders, successful treatments for firearm phobias are seldom reported. The assessment and treatment of a phobia specific to firing the 9 mm service pistol is described. The case was identified during a Return to Australia Psychological Screening (RTAPS) evolution, following the operational deployment of a Royal Australian Navy warship. The screening package involved group based psychoeducation and standardised self report scales for detecting trauma experiences and sources of psychological distress. These were followed by semi-structured individual interviews. This process revealed a sailor with a phobia linked to a traumatic experience following an unauthorised discharge of a 9 mm pistol. A behavioural treatment regime was planned and conducted at sea under operational conditions. Live firing constituted the main intervention. The positive results suggest live firing is a safe and effective form of single session exposure, conditional on additional safety precautions to supplement regulated weapons handling procedures. Understanding and explaining emergent constitutive laws in the multi-scale evolution from point defects, dislocations and two-dimensional defects to plate tectonic scales is an arduous challenge in condensed matter physics. The Earth appears to be the only planet known to have developed stable plate tectonics as a means to get rid of its heat. The emergence of plate tectonics out of mantle convection appears to rely intrinsically on the capacity to form extremely weak faults in the top 100 km of the planet. These faults have a memory of at least several hundred millions of years, yet they appear to rely on the effects of water on line defects. This important phenomenon was first discovered in laboratory and dubbed ``hydrolytic weakening''. At the large scale it explains cycles of co-located resurgence of plate generation and consumption (the Wilson cycle), but the exact physics underlying the process itself and the enormous spanning of scales still remains unclear. We present an attempt to use the multi-scale non-equilibrium thermodynamic energy evolution inside the deforming lithosphere to move phenomenological laws to laws derived from basic scaling quantities, develop self-consistent weakening laws at lithospheric scale and give a fully coupled deformation-weakening constitutive framework. At meso- to plate scale we encounter in a stepwise manner three basic domains governed by the diffusion/reaction time scales of grain growth, thermal diffusion and finally water mobility through point defects in the crystalline lattice. The latter process governs the planetary scale and controls the stability of its heat transfer mode.

Business Process Management (BPM) is widely seen as the top priority in organizations wanting to survive competitive markets. However, the current academic research agenda does not seem to map with industry demands. In this paper, we address the need to identify the actual issues that organizations face in their efforts to manage business processes. To that end, we report a number of critical issues identified by industry in what we consider to be the first steps towards an industry-driven research agenda for the BPM area. The reported issues are derived from a series of focus groups conducted with Australian organizations. The findings point to, among others, a need for more consolidated efforts in the areas of business process governance, systematic change management, developing BPM methodologies, and introducing appropriate performance measures.
