The aim in the current study was to investigate the emergence of pretend play, mirror self-recognition, synchronic imitation and deferred imitation in normally developing human infants. A longitudinal study was conducted with 98 infants seen at three-monthly intervals from 12 through to 24 months of age. At each session the infants were tested on a range of tasks assessing the four target skills. Deferred imitation was found to emerge prior to synchronic imitation, pretend play and mirror self-recognition. In contrast, the latter three skills emerged between 18 and 21 months and followed similar developmental trajectories. Deferred imitation was found to hold a prerequisite relation with these three skills. Synchronic imitation, pretend play and mirror self-recognition were not closely associated and no prerequisite relations were found between these skills. These findings are discussed in the context of current theories regarding the development of pretend play, mirror self-recognition, synchronic imitation and deferred imitation in the second year. Background/Purpose: Several pull-through procedures are available for the surgical management of Hirschsprung's disease (HD) in children. The authors have adopted a laparoscopic approach since 1995, including laparoscopic Swenson procedure (LSw), both for one-stage primary and 2-stage secondary procedures. The aim of this study was to examine the role of LSw in children with HD in both primary and secondary procedures. Methods: From January 1995 to December 2001, 42 children with biopsy-proven HD underwent laparoscopic pull-through procedure for HD. This group included 29 children who underwent LSw, a detailed analysis of which forms the basis of this report. Results: Sixteen children underwent a single-stage neonatal LSw; the median weight of this group at the time of surgery was 3.2 kg and the median age was 5 days. Secondary LSw was performed in the remaining 13 children, which included 3 children with total colonic HD who underwent laparoscopic total colectomy and LSw. The median operating time was 105 minutes (range, 66 to 175 minutes). The median time to commence full diet was 48 hours (range, 24 to 86 hours), and median time to return to normal play and activity was 72 hours (range, 48 hours to 5 days). There was no difference in operating time between primary and secondary pull-through procedures. There were no intraoperative complications, and no patient required open conversion. Postoperative ileus was noted in 3 children and enterocolitis in 2. The median hospital stay was 4 days (range, 2 to 6 days). Follow-up was between 6 months to 7 years with a median follow-up of 2.2 years. At follow-up, 2 children required laparoscopic antegrade continence enema procedure. A satisfactory continence was noted in 15 of the 19 children who were older than 3 years at the time of last follow-up. Conclusions: LSw seems to be a suitable procedure for laparoscopic management of HD in children. LSw is safe and effective, both for primary and secondary type of pull-through procedures, with good short-term results.

This study assessed the theory of mind (ToM) and executive functioning (EF) abilities of 124 typically developing preschool children aged 3 to 5 years in relation to whether or not they had a child-aged sibling (i.e. a child aged 1 to 12 years) at home with whom to play and converse. On a ToM battery that included tests of false belief, appearance-reality (AR) and pretend representation, children who had at least 1 child-aged sibling scored significantly higher than both only children and those whose only siblings were infants or adults. The numbers of child-aged siblings in preschoolers' families positively predicted their scores on both a ToM battery (4 tasks) and an EF battery (2 tasks), and these associations remained significant with language ability partialled out. Results of a hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that independent contributions to individual differences in ToM were made by language ability, EF skill and having a child-aged sibling. However, even though some conditions for mediation were met, there was no statistically reliable evidence that EF skills mediated the advantage of presence of child-aged siblings for ToM performance. While consistent with the theory that distinctively childish interaction among siblings accelerates the growth of both TOM and EF capacities, alternative evidence and alternative theoretical interpretations for the findings were also considered.

Outdoor and Environmental Education Centres provide programs that are designed to address a range of environmental education aims, and contribute broadly to student learning for sustainability. This paper examines the roles such Centres can play, and how they might contribute to the Australian Government’s initiative in relation to sustainable schools. Interviews with the principals of 23 such Centres in Queensland revealed three roles or models under which they operate: the destination model; the expert/advisor model; and the partnership model. Principals’ understandings of these roles are discussed and the factors that support or hinder their implementation are identified. It is concluded that while the provision of programs in the environment is still a vital role of outdoor and environmental education centres, these can also be seen as a point of entry to long-term partnerships with whole school communities.

Play is the primary occupation of childhood and provides a potentially powerful means of assessing and treating children with autistic disorder. This study utilized a cross-sectional comparison design to investigate the nature of play engagement in children with AD (n = 24), relative to typically developing children (n = 34) matched for chronological age. Play behaviours were recorded in a clinical play environment. Videotapes comprising 15 minutes of the children's spontaneous play behaviour were analysed using time-interval analysis. The particular play behaviours observed and play objects used were coded. Differences in play behaviours (p < 0.0001) and play object preferences (p < 0.0001) were identified between the groups. Findings regarding play behaviour contribute to contention in the literature surrounding functional and symbolic play. Explanations for play object preferences are postulated. Recommendations are made regarding clinical application of findings in terms of enhancing assessment and intervention by augmenting motivation.

The authors evaluate a model suggesting that the performance of highly neurotic individuals, relative to their stable counterparts, is more strongly influenced by factors relating to the allocation of attentional resources. First, an air traffic control simulation was used to examine the interaction between effort intensity and scores on the Anxiety subscale of Eysenck Personality Profiler Neuroticism in the prediction of task performance. Overall effort intensity enhanced performance for highly anxious individuals more so than for individuals with low anxiety. Second, a longitudinal field study was used to examine the interaction between office busyness and Eysenck Personality Inventory Neuroticism in the prediction of telesales performance. Changes in office busyness were associated with greater performance improvements for highly neurotic individuals compared with less neurotic individuals. These studies suggest that highly neurotic individuals outperform their stable counterparts in a busy work environment or if they are expending a high level of effort.

A common feature associated with the replication of most RNA viruses is the formation of a unique membrane environment encapsulating the viral replication complex. For their part, flaviviruses are no exception, whereupon infection causes a dramatic rearrangement and induction of unique membrane structures within the cytoplasm of infected cells. These virus-induced membranes, termed paracrystalline arrays, convoluted membranes, and vesicle packets, all appear to have specific functions during replication and are derived from different organelles within the host cell. The aim of this study was to identify which protein(s) specified by the Australian strain of West Nile virus, Kunjin virus (KUNV), are responsible for the dramatic membrane alterations observed during infection. Thus, we have shown using immunolabeling of ultrathin cryosections of transfected cells that expression of the KUNV polyprotein intermediates NS4A-4B and NS213-34A, as well as that of individual NS4A proteins with and without the C-terminal transmembrane domain 2K, resulted in different degrees of rearrangement of cytoplasmic membranes. The formation of the membrane structures characteristic for virus infection required coexpression of an NS4A-NS4B cassette with the viral protease NS2B-3pro which was shown to be essential for the release of the individual NS4A and NS4B proteins. Individual expression of NS4A protein retaining the C-terminal transmembrane domain 2K resulted in the induction of membrane rearrangements most resembling virus-induced structures, while removal of the 2K domain led to a less profound membrane rearrangement but resulted in the redistribution of the NS4A protein to the Golgi apparatus. The results show that cleavage of the KUNV polyprotein NS4A-4B by the viral protease is the key initiation event in the induction of membrane rearrangement and that the NS4A protein intermediate containing the uncleaved C-terminal transmembrane domain plays an essential role in these membrane rearrangements.
