South China Sea (SCS) is a major moisture source region, providing summer monsoon rainfall throughout Mainland China, which accounts for more than 80% total precipitation in the region. We report seasonal to monthly resolution Sr/Ca and delta(18)O data for five Holocene and one modem Porites corals, each covering a growth history of 9-13 years. The results reveal a general decreasing trend in sea surface temperature (SST) in the SCS from similar to 6800 to 1500 years ago, despite shorter climatic cycles. Compared with the mean Sr/Ca-SST in the 1990s (24.8 degrees C), 10-year mean Sr/Ca-SSTs were 0.9-0.5 degrees C higher between 6.8 and 5.0 thousand years before present (ky BP), dropped to the present level by similar to 2.5 ky BP, and reached a low of 22.6 degrees C (2.2 degrees C lower) by similar to 1.5 ky BP. The summer Sr/Ca-SST maxima, which are more reliable due to faster summer-time growth rates and higher sampling resolution, follow the same trend, i.e. being 1-2 degrees C higher between 6.8 and 5.0 ky BP, dropping to the present level by -2.5 ky BP, and reaching a low of 28.7 degrees C (0.7 degrees C lower) by similar to 1.5 ky BP. Such a decline in SST is accompanied by a similar decrease in the amount of monsoon moisture transported out of South China Sea, resulting in a general decrease in the seawater delta(18)O values, reflected by offsets of mean 6 180 relative to that in the 1990s. This observation is consistent with general weakening of the East Asian summer monsoon since early Holocene, in response to a continuous decline in solar radiation, which was also found in pollen, lake-level and loess/paleosol records throughout Mainland China. The climatic conditions similar to 2.5 and similar to 1.5 ky ago were also recorded in Chinese history. In contrast with the general cooling trend of the monsoon climate in East Asia, SST increased dramatically in recent time, with that in the 1990s being 2.2 degrees C warmer than that similar to 1.5 ky ago. This clearly indicates that the increase in the concentration of anthropogenic greenhouse gases played a dominant role in recent global warming, which reversed the natural climatic trend in East Asian monsoon regime. The houbara bustard, Chlamydotis undulata, is a declining cryptic desert bird whose range extends from North Africa to Central Asia. Three subspecies are currently recognized by geographical distribution and morphology: C.u.fuertaventurae, C.u.undulata and C.u.macqueenii. We have sequenced 854 bp of mitochondrial control region from 73 birds to describe their population genetic structure with a particular sampling focus on the connectivity between C.u.fuertaventurae and C.u.undulata along the Atlantic seaboard of North Africa. Nucleotide and haplotypic diversity varied among the subspecies being highest in C.u.undulata, lowest in C.u.fuertaventurae and intermediate in C.u.macqueenii. C.u.fuertaventurae and C.u.undulata are paraphyletic and an average nucleotide divergence of 2.08% splits the later from C.u.macqueenii. We estimate that C.u.fuertaventurae and C.u.undulata split from C.u.macqueenii approximately 430 000 years ago. C.u.fuertaventurae and C.u.undulata are weakly differentiated (F-ST = 0.27, N-m = 1.3), indicative of a recent shared history. Archaeological evidence indicates that houbara bustards have been present on the Canary Islands for 130-170 000 years. However, our genetic data point to a more recent separation of C.u.fuertaventurae and C.u.undulata at around 20-25 000 years. Concordant archaeological, climatic opportunities for colonization and genetic data point to a scenario of: (i) initial colonization of the Canary Islands about 130 000 years ago; (ii) a period of secondary contact 19-30 000 years ago homogenizing any pre-existing genetic structure followed by; (iii) a period of relative isolation that persists today.

Marteilia sydneyi (Paramyxea) is the causative agent of QX disease in oysters. In spite of the economic impact of this disease, its origin and the precise reason(s) for its apparent spread in Australian waters are not yet known. Given such knowledge gaps, investigating the population genetic structure(s) of M. sydneyi populations could provide insights into the epidemiology and ecology of the parasite and could assist in its prevention and control. In this study, single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP)-based analysis of a region (195 bp) of the first internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1) of ribosomal DNA was employed to investigate genetic variation within and among five populations of M. sydneyi from oysters from five different locations in eastern Australia. The analysis showed the existence of a genetic variant of M. sydneyi common to the Great Sandy Strait, and the Richmond and Georges Rivers, as distinct from variants at the Pimpama and Clarence Rivers. Together with historical and other information relating to the QX disease outbreaks in eastern Australia, the molecular findings support the proposal that the parasite originated in the Great Sandy Strait and/or Richmond River and then extended southward along the coast. From a technical perspective, the study demonstrated the usefulness of SSCP as a tool to study the population genetics and epidemiology of M. sydneyi. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Rare earth element (REE) plus yttrium (Y) patterns of modem seawater have characteristic features that can be used as chemical fingerprints. Reliable proxies for marine REE + Y chemistry have been demonstrated from a large geological time span, including Archaean banded iron formation (BIF), stromatolitic limestone, Phanerozoic reef carbonate and Holocene microbialite. Here we present new REE + Y data for two distinct suites of early Archaean (ca. 3.7-3.8 Ga) metamorphosed rocks from southern West Greenland, whose interrelationships, if any, have been much debated in recent literature. The first suite comprises mangetite-quartz BIF, magnetite-carbonate BIF and banded magnetite-rich quartz rock, mostly from the Isua Greenstone Belt (IGB). The REE + Y patterns, particularly diagnostic anomalies (Ce/Ce*, Pr/Pr*), are closely related to those of published seawater proxies. The second suite includes banded quartz-pyroxene-amphibole +/- garnet rocks with minor magnetite from the so-called Akilia Association enclaves (in early Archaean granitoid gneisses) of the coastal region, some 150 km southwest of the IGB. Rocks of this type from one much publicised and highly debated locality (the island of Akilia) have been identified by some workers [Nature 384 (1996) 55; Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 61 (1997) 2475] as BIF-facies, and their C-13-depleted signature in trace graphite interpreted as a proxy for earliest life on Earth. However, REE + Y patterns of the Akilia Association suite (except for one probably genuine magnetite-rich BIF from Ugpik) are inconsistent with a seawater origin. We agree with published geological and geochemical (including REE) work [Science 296 (2002) 1448] that most of the analysed Akilia rocks are not chemical sediments, and that C-isotopes in such rocks therefore cannot be used as biological proxies. Application of the REE + Y discriminant for the above two rock suites has been facilitated in this study by the use of MC-ICP technique which yields a more complete and precise REE + Y spectrum than was available in many previous studies. This work is part of a series of studies dealing with the evaluation of the effects of major elements of solid waste, especially metallic oxides, nitrates, sulfates, and chlorides, on the sintering and the densification of calcium hydroxyapatite (Ca-HAP) adsorbent. The effects of chloride salts of potassium (KCl) and zinc (ZnCl2) on sintering and densification of Ca-HAP were studied using surface area reduction and shrinkage measurements. The addition of KCl (2% w/w) activated the sintering process by bringing a swift reduction in surface area and lowering the densification temperature. However, a low final densification was achieved. Increasing the amount of this additive to 10% w/w further lowered the final densification and lowered the densification temperature of hydroxyapatite by 150 degrees C. On the other hand, the addition of 2 wt % of ZnCl2 deactivated the sintering process by slowing down the densification process and raising the densification temperature. However, the reduction of surface area was comparable to that of Ca-HAP. The densification rate contained two or more rate maxima indicating the additives (salts) bring multiple speeds in the densification process.

The mean abundances of Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Fe based on both strong and weak lines of alpha CenAare determined by matching the observed line profiles with those synthesised from stellar atmospheric models and comparing these results with a similar analysis for the Sun. There is good agreement between the abundances from strong and weak lines. Strong lines should generally be an excellent indicator of abundance and far easier to measure than the weak lines normally used. Until the development of the Anstee, Barklem, and O'Mara ( ABO) theory for collisional line broadening, the uncertainty in the value of the damping constant prevented strong lines being used for abundance determinations other than in close differential analyses. We found that alpha Cen A has a mean overabundance of 0.12 +/- 0.06 dex compared to solar mean abundances. This result agrees remarkably well with previous studies that did not use strong lines or the ABO theory for collisional line broadening. Our result supports the conclusion that reliable abundances can be derived from strong lines provided this new theory for line broadening is used to calculate the van derWaals damping.

Allozyme and molecular sequence data from the malaria vector Anopheles flavirostris (Ludlow) (Diptera: Culicidae) were analysed from 34 sites throughout the Philippines, including the type locality, to test the hypothesis that this taxon is a single panmictic species. A finer-scaled allozyme study, of mainly Luzon samples, revealed no fixed genetic differences in sympatric sites and only low levels of variation. We obtained data from partial sequences for the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) (483 bp), the third domain (D3) (330 bp) of the 28S ribosomal DNA subunit and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of mitochondrial DNA (261 bp). No sequence variation was observed for ITS2, only a one base pair difference was observed between Philippine and Indonesian D3 sequences and An. flavirostris sequences were unique, confirming their diagnostic value for this taxon. Sixteen COI haplotypes were identified, giving 25 parsimony informative sites. Neighbour-Joining, Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analysis of COI sequences for An. flavirostris and outgroup taxa revealed strong branch support for the monophyly of An. flavirostris, thus confirming that Philippine populations of this taxon comprise a single separate species within the Minimus Subgroup of the Funestus Group. Variation in the behaviour of An. flavirostris is likely to be intraspecific rather than interspecific in origin. © 2006 The Royal Entomological Society.

Exercise brachial blood pressure ( BP) predicts mortality, but because of wave reflection, central ( ascending aortic) pressure differs from brachial pressure. Exercise central BP may be clinically important, and a noninvasive means to derive it would be useful. The purpose of this study was to test the validity of a noninvasive technique to derive exercise central BP. Ascending aortic pressure waveforms were recorded using a micromanometer-tipped 6F Millar catheter in 30 patients (56 +/- 9 years; 21 men) undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography. Simultaneous recordings of the derived central pressure waveform were acquired using servocontrolled radial tonometry at rest and during supine cycling. Pulse wave analysis of the direct and derived pressure signals was performed offline (SphygmoCor 7.01). From rest to exercise, mean arterial pressure and heart rate were increased by 20 +/- 10 mm Hg and 15 +/- 7 bpm, respectively, and central systolic BP ranged from 77 to 229 mm Hg. There was good agreement and high correlation between invasive and noninvasive techniques with a mean difference (+/- SD) for central systolic BP of -1.3 +/- 3.2 mm Hg at rest and -4.7 +/- 3.3 mm Hg at peak exercise ( for both r=0.995; P < 0.001). Conversely, systolic BP was significantly higher peripherally than centrally at rest (155 +/- 33 versus 138 +/- 32mm Hg; mean difference, -16.3 +/- 9.4mm Hg) and during exercise (180 +/- 34 versus 164 +/- 33 mm Hg; mean difference, -15.5 +/- 10.4 mm Hg; for both P < 0.001). True myocardial afterload is not reliably estimated by peripheral systolic BP. Radial tonometry and pulse wave analysis is an accurate technique for the noninvasive determination of central BP at rest and during exercise.

Mesoporous chromium oxide (Cr2O3) nanocrystals were first synthesized by the thermal decomposition reaction of Cr(NO3)(3)(circle)9H(2)O using citric acid monohydrate (CA) as the mesoporous template agent. The texture and chemistry of chromium oxide nanocrystals were characterized by N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, FTIR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis, and thermoanalytical methods. It was shown that the hydrate water and CA are the crucial factors in influencing the formation of mesoporous Cr2O3 nanocrystals in the mixture system. The decomposition of CA results in the formation of a mesoporous structure with wormlike pores. The hydrate water of the mixture provides surface hydroxyls that act as binders, making the nanocrystals aggregate. The pore structures and phases of chromium oxide are affected by the ratio of precursor-to-CA, thermal temperature, and time.

The metamorphic belt of the Western Alps was subjected to widespread extensional tectonism at the end of the Eocene (ca. 45-35 Ma). Extension was accommodated by hinterland-directed movements along gently inclined extensional shear zones, which facilitated rapid exhumation of high-pressure and ultra-high-pressure rocks. This deformation resulted in a normal metamorphic sequence. Extension in the inner parts of the Western Alps was coeval with shortening at the front of the belt (foreland-directed thrusts), which took place during decompression, and emplaced higher grade metamorphic units over lower grade metamorphic rocks, thus forming an inverse metamorphic sequence. Two mechanisms for this extensional episode are discussed: (1) collapse of an overthickened lithosphere, and (2) internal readjustments within the orogenic wedge due to subduction channel dynamics. We favour the latter mechanism because it can account for the development of the observed inverse and normal metamorphic sequences along foreland-directed thrusts and hinterland-directed detachments, respectively. This hypothesis is supported by published structural, metamorphic and geochronological data from four geological transects through the Western Alps. This study also emphasizes the importance of post-shearing deformation (e.g. horizontal buckling versus vertical flattening), which can modify the distribution of hinterland- and foreland-directed shear zones in orogenic belts. Insects have a much smaller repertoire of voltage-gated calcium (Ca-v) channels than vertebrates. Drosophila melanogaster harbors only a single ortholog of each of the vertebrate Ca(v)1, Ca(v)2, and Ca(v)3 subtypes, although its basal inventory is expanded by alternative splicing and editing of Ca-v channel transcripts. Nevertheless, there appears to be little functional plasticity within this limited panel of insect Ca-v channels, since severe loss-of-function mutations in genes encoding the pore-forming a, subunits in Drosophila are embryonic lethal. Since the primary role of spider venom is to paralyze or kill insect prey, it is not surprising that most, if not all, spider venoms contain peptides that potently modify the activity of these functionally critical insect Ca-v channels. Unfortunately, it has proven difficult to determine the precise ion channel subtypes recognized by these peptide toxins since insect Ca-v channels have significantly different pharmacology to their vertebrate counterparts, and cloned insect Ca-v channels are not available for electrophysiological studies. However, biochemical and genetic studies indicate that some of these spider toxins might ultimately become the defining pharmacology for certain subtypes of insect Ca-v channels. This review focuses on peptidic spider toxins that specifically target insect Ca-v channels. In addition to providing novel molecular tools for ion channel characterization, some of these toxins are being used as leads to develop new methods for controlling insect pests.
