The genetic mechanisms responsible for the formation of adrenocortical adenomas which autonomously produce aldosterone are largely unknown, The adrenal renin-angiotensin system has been implicated in the pathophysiology of these tumours, Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) catalyses the generation of angiotensin II, and the insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism of the ACE gene regulates up to 50% of plasma and cellular ACE variability in humans. We therefore examined the genotypic and allelic frequency distributions of the ACE gene I/D polymorphism in 55 patients with aldosterone-producing adenoma, APA, (angiotensin-unresponsive APA n = 28, angiotensin-responsive APA n = 27), and 80 control subjects with no family history of hypertension, We also compared the ACE gene I/D polymorphism allelic pattern in matched tumour and peripheral blood DNA in the 55 patients with APA, The frequency of the D allele was 0.518 and 0.512 and the I allele was 0.482 and 0.488 in the APA and control subjects respectively, Genotypic and allelic frequency analysis found no significant differences between the groups, Examination of the matched tumour and peripheral blood DNA samples revealed the loss of the insertion allele in four of the 25 patients who were heterozygous for the ACE I/D genotype. The I/D polymorphism of the ACE gene does not appear to contribute to the biochemical and phenotypic characteristics of APA, however, the deletion of the insertion allele of the ACE gene I/D polymorphism in 16% of aldosterone-producing adenomas may represent the loss of a tumour suppressor gene/s or other genes on chromosome 17q which may contribute to tumorigenesis in APA.

This chapter begins with a definition of terrorism and a brief review of some of the more traditional applications of social psychology theory. The authors then outline a broadly based theory of the self and explore the implications of the theory for the recruitment of terrorists. Examined the barriers faced by people with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) when integrating their Assistive Technology (AT) into the workplace, as well as factors that contribute to successful integration. In-depth interviews were taken with 5 men (aged 37-50 yrs) with SCI, 3 of their employers and 2 co-workers. Results indicate that in addition to the barriers previously outlined in the literature related to funding the technology, time delays, information availability, training and maintenance, other issues were highlighted. Implications for service providers are considered in relation to these barriers and the factors that prompted successful integration. Item noise models of recognition assert that interference at retrieval is generated by the words from the study list. Context noise models of recognition assert that interference at retrieval is generated by the contexts in which the test word has appeared. The authors introduce the bind cue decide model of episodic memory, a Bayesian context noise model, and demonstrate how it can account for data from the item noise and dual-processing approaches to recognition memory. From the item noise perspective, list strength and list length effects, the mirror effect for word frequency and concreteness, and the effects of the similarity of other words in a list are considered. From the dual-processing perspective, process dissociation data on the effects of length. temporal separation of lists, strength, and diagnosticity of context are examined. Can the parent of a child with autism or Asperger Syndrome ever really comprehend the experiences of their child? As a greater number of cases are identified and more is understood about these conditions, autism and Asperger Syndrome seem to be increasingly commonly understood terms. Despite the clear definitions provided by diagnostic criteria for the conditions (e.g., American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1994), it often remains difficult for professionals, parents and other carers, particularly those who are newcomers to this field, to truly understand the complexities of these conditions with respect to the day-to-day influences upon the affected individual.
