Simple design formulas for designing ultra wideband (UWB) antennas in the form of complementary planar monopoles are described and their validity is tested using full electromagnetic wave simulations and measurements. Assuming dielectric substrate with relative permittivity of 10.2, the designed antennas feature a small size of 13 mmtimes26 mm. They exhibit a 10 dB return loss bandwidth from 3 to more than 15 GHz accompanied by near omnidirectional characteristics and good radiation efficiency throughout this band

Using a Radial Guide Field Matching Method, an investigation is performed into reducing the height of an electronically steered circular array of monopole antennas composed of a central active element surrounded by passive elements being either short- or open-circuited. It is shown that a considerable height reduction can be achieved using top hats attached to monopoles ends and by applying dielectric coating underneath the top hats. The trade-off in achieving height reduction is narrower impedance bandwidth.

Following the original analysis Of Zhang and Hu for the 4-dimensional generalization of Quantum Hall effect, there has been much work from different viewpoints on the higher dimensional condensed matter systems. In this paper, we discuss three kinds of topological excitations in the SO(4) gauge field of condensed matter systems in 4-dimension-the instantons and anti-instantons, the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles, and the 2-membranes. Using the phi-mapping topological theory, it is revealed that there are 4-, 3-, and 2-dimensional topological currents inhering in the SO (4) gauge field, and the above three kinds of excitations can be directly and explicitly derived from these three kinds of currents, respectively. Moreover, it is shown that the topological charges of these excitations are characterized by the Hopf indices and Brouwer degrees of phi-mapping. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The design of an ultra-wideband planar tapered slot antenna for use in a circular cylindrical microwave imaging system is pre-sented. The antenna was designed assuming high dielectric substrate material Rogers RT6010LM to achieve its compact size. The developed antenna element (50 X 50 mm(2)) features a 10-dB return loss bandwidth from 2.75 GHz to more than 11 GHz. The gain of the antenna is between 3.5 and 9.4 dBi over the 3-10 GHz band. The experimental tests showed that the manufactured antenna element supports transmission of narrow pulses with negligible distortions, as required in the microwave imaging system. This paper presents investigations into an indoor 2×2 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system, whose diversity performance is assessed using a high precision test-bed. In this system, transmitter and receiver are equipped with 180° or 90° 3dB hybrids with their two output ports terminated with co-polar monopole antennas. By feeding a signal to one of the two input ports of the hybrid (while the other input port is matched terminated) different communication channels in a rich-scattering environment can be created. The test-bed allows for the signal strength measurements around the receiver/ transmitter sides for a given feeding configuration of hybrids when the receiver is moved over a circular region in an indoor environment. The signal strengths maps obtained for various modes of this 2×2 MIMO system are foundations for investigating transmit/receive diversity schemes. As the signal strength measurement results are obtained with Bluetooth modules operating in the ISM 2.4 GHz, the results are of importance to many other wireless systems that aim at utilizing MIMO diversity schemes to enhance their performance in this frequency band.

This paper presents a high precision testbed for evaluating antenna diversity techniques in an indoor environment. Details concerning mechanical, electrical and electronics hardware and associated measurement software are described. Initial measurement results for two Bluetooth modules operating with co-polar and cross-polar monopole antennas in the ISM 2.4 GHz band are given.
