The effect of iron on the grain refinement of high-purity Mg-3%Al and Mg-91%Al alloys has been investigated using anhydrous FeCl3 as an iron additive at 750degreesC in carbon-free aluminium titanite crucibles. It was shown that grain refinement was readily achievable for both alloys. Fe- and Al-rich intermetallic particles were observed in many magnesium grains. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Optical metallographic techniques for grain-size measurement give unreliable results for high pressure diecast Mg-Al alloys and electron back-scattered diffraction mapping (EBSD) provides a good tool for improving the quality of these measurements. An application of EBSD mapping to this question is described, and data for some castings are presented. Ion-beam milling was needed to prepare suitable samples, and this technique is detailed. As is well-known for high pressure die castings, the grain size distribution comprises at least two populations. The mean grain size of the fine-grained population was similar in both AZ91 and AM60 and in two casting thicknesses (2 mm and 5 mm) and, contrary to previously published reports, it did not vary with depth below the surface.

Detailed microscopic examination using optical and electron microscopes suggests that Al4C3, often observed in the central regions of magnesium grains on polished sections, is a potent substrate for primary Mg. Calculations of the crystallographic relationships between magnesium and Al4C3 further support the experimental observations. (c) 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. A model for the crystallography and morphology of diffusion-controlled phase transformations - edge-to-edge matching - has been used to predict the orientation relationships (OR) and habit planes of precipitates Mg17Al12 in Mg-Al alloy, Mg24Y5 in Mg-Y alloy and alpha-Mn in Mg-Mn alloy. Based on the crystal structures and lattice parameters only, the model predicts that the possible ORs between Mg17Al12 and Mg matrix are the near Burgers OR, the Potter OR, the Gjonnes-Ostmoe OR and the Crawley OR. In the Mg-Y alloy, the OR between Mg24Y5 precipitates and the Mg matrix is predicted to be the Burgers OR only. The model also predicts that there are no reproducible ORs between alpha-Mn and Mg in the Mg-Mn alloy. Combining the edge-to-edge matching model and W. Zhang's Deltag approach, the habit plane and side facets of the precipitate for each OR can be determined. All the predicted ORs and the corresponding habit planes in Mg-Al and Mg-Y alloys agree very well with the experimental results. (C) 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Grain size is one of the most important microstructural characteristics determining the mechanical properties and therefore the service performance of polycrystalline materials. Heterogeneous nucleation involves the addition or in situ formation of potent nuclei in the system to promote nucleation events, leading to a fine grain structure. This paper reports experimental results using graphite and SiC as potential grain refining agents to form in situ nuclei for Mg in Mg-Al alloys, and demonstrates the key role of Al4C3 in grain refilling this important alloy system. This insight will contribute to the design and development of the most cost effective, eco-friendly grain refining agents for Mg-Al alloys. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The addition of SiC particles effectively grain refined a range of Mg-Al alloys. The greatest reductions in grain size were found for the alloys with lower Al contents. The presence of Mg2Si in the microstructure after that SiC addition, and consideration of phase equilibria suggested that the SiC transforms to Al4C3, and this is the actual nucleant. The addition of Mn poisoned the grain refining effect of the SiC addition, probably due to the formation of less potent Al-Mn-carbides. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Manganese is a grain refiner for high purity Mg-3%Al, Mg-6%Al, Mg-9%Al, and commercial AZ31 (Mg-3%Al-1%Zn) alloys when introduced in the form of an Al-60%Mn master alloy splatter but the use of pure Mn flakes and ALTAB (TM) Mn75 tablets shows no grain refinement. Long time holding of the melt at 730 degrees C leads to an increase in grain size. The mechanism is attributed to the presence of all epsilon-AlMn phase (hexagonal close-packed) in the master alloy splatter. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The tensile deformation behavior of a range of supersaturated Mg-Al solid solutions and an as-cast magnesium alloy AM60 has been studied. The Mg-Al alloys were tested at room temperature while the alloy AM60 was tested in the temperature range 293-573 K. The differences in the deformation behavior of the alloys is discussed in terms of hardening and softening processes. In order to identify which processes were active, the stress dependence of the strain-hardening coefficient was assessed using Lukac and Balik's model of hardening and softening. The analysis indicates that hardening involves solid solution hardening and interaction with forest dislocations and non-dislocation obstacles such as second phase particles. Cross slip is not a significant recovery process in the temperature range 293-423 K. At temperatures between 473 and 523 K the analysis suggests that softening is controlled by cross slip and climb of dislocations. At temperatures above 523 K softening seems to be controlled by dynamic recrystallisation. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work studied the effect of the impurity iron and the alloying elements aluminium and zinc in single-phase substrate magnesium alloys on the corrosion resistance of the alloys after anodisation. It was found that increasing zinc content (0-2%) led to increased corrosion resistance of an anodised single-phase Mg-Zn alloy. The addition of Al lowered the corrosion resistance of an anodised commercial purity Mg-Al single-phase alloy, whereas the same addition was found to be beneficial to the corrosion resistance of an anodised high purity Mg-Al single-phase alloy. Heat-treatment made the substrate Mg-Al and Mg-Zn alloys more uniform and hence improved the corrosion resistance of the alloys after anodisation. The detrimental effect of iron impurity on corrosion performance of the unanodised substrate single-phase magnesium alloys was inherited by the anodised alloys. The corrosion resistance of the anodised Mg alloys was found to be closely correlated with the corrosion performance of the unanodised as-cast Mg alloys. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A magnesium alloy of eutectic composition (33 wt-'%Al) was directionally solidified in mild steel tubes at two growth rates, 32 and 580 mum s(-1,) in a temperature gradient between 10 and 20 K mm(-1). After directional solidification, the composition of each specimen varied dramatically, from 32'%Al in the region that had remained solid to 18%Al (32 mum s(-1) specimen) and 13%Al (580 mum s(-1) specimen) at the plane that had been quenched from the eutectic temperature. As the aluminium content decreased, the microstructure contained an increasing volume fraction of primary magnesium dendrites and the eutectic morphology gradually changed from lamellar to partially divorced. The reduction in aluminium content was caused by the growth of an Al-Fe phase ahead of the Mg-Al growth front. Most of the growth of the Al-Fe phase occurred during the remelting period before directional solidification. The thickness of the Al-Fe phase increased with increased temperature and time of contact with the molten Mg-Al alloy. (C) 2003 Maney Publishing.

A computer model of the mechanical alloying process has been developed to simulate phase formation during the mechanical alloying of Mo and Si elemental powders with a ternary addition of Al, Mg, Ti or Zr. Using the Arhennius equation, the model balances the formation rates of the competing reactions that are observed during milling. These reactions include the formation of tetragonal C11(b) MOSi2 (t-MoSi2) by combustion, the formation of the hexagonal C40 MoSi2 polymorph (h-MoSi2), the transformation of the tetragonal to the hexagonal form, and the recovery of t-MoSi2 from h-MoSi2 and deformed t-MoSi2. The addition of the ternary additions changes the free energy of formation of the associated MoSi2 alloys, i.e. Mo(Si, Al)(2), Mo(Mg, Al)(2), (Mo, Ti)Si-2 (Mo, Zr)Si-2 and (Mo, Fe)Si-2, respectively. Variation of the energy of formation alone is sufficient for the simulation to accurately model the observed phase formation. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
