The ingress of water into copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate (THFMA) loaded with either one of two model drugs, ie vitamin B-12 or aspirin, was studied at 310 K using three-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (3D NMR) imaging. The poly(HEMA) was loaded with 5 wt% of the drugs. From the imaging profiles it was observed that incorporation of vitamin B-12 into the polymers rich in HEMA resulted in crack formation at the interface between the rubbery region and the glassy core on sorption of water, although these cracks were 'healed' behind the diffusion front. However, for the copolymers with low HEMA contents and for those containing aspirin, no evidence for similar crack formation was found. For the copolymers loaded with 5 wt% of aspirin or vitamin B-12 the values of the water diffusion coefficients, determined by curve-fitting the relative water concentration profiles from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements, were found to be smaller than those obtained from a mass uptake study. The ingress of water and Kokubo simulated body fluid (SBF) into poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), and its co-polymers with tetrahydrofurduryl methacrylate (THFMA), loaded with either one of two model drugs, vitamin 1312 or aspirin, was studied by mass uptake over the temperature range 298-318 K. The polymers were studied as cylinders and were loaded with either 5 wt% or 10 wt% of the drugs. From DSC studies it was observed that vitamin B-12 behaved as a physical cross-linker restricting chain segmental mobility, and so had a small anti-plasticisation effect on PHEMA and the co-polymers rich in HEMA, but almost no effect on the T-g of co-polymers rich in THFMA. On the other hand, aspirin exhibited a plasticising effect on PHEMA and the copolymers. All of the polymers were found to absorb water and SBF according to a Fickian diffusion mechanism. The polymers were all found to swell to a greater extent in SBF than in water, which was attributed to the presence of Tris buffer in the SBF. The sorptions of the two penetrants were found to follow Fickian kinetics in all cases and the diffusion coefficients at 310 K for SBF were found to be smaller than those for water, except for the polymers containing aspirin where the diffusion coefficients were higher than for the other systems. For example, for sorption into PHEMA the diffusion coefficient for water was 1.41 X 10(-11) m(2)/s and for SBF was 0.79 x 10-11 m(2)/s, but in the presence of 5 wt% aspirin the corresponding values were 1.27 x 10(-1)1 m(2)/s and 1.25 x 10(-11) m(2)/s, respectively. The corresponding values for PHEMA loaded with 5 wt% B-12 were 1.25 x 10(-11) m(2)/s and 0.74 x 10(-11) m(2)/s, respectively.

Published polymer distribution data for aqueous poly(ethylene glycol)/dextran mixtures have been reassessed to illustrate the feasibility of their quantitative characterization in terms of the Flory-Huggins theory of polymer thermodynamics. Phase diagrams predicted by this characterization procedure provide better descriptions of the experimental data than those based on an earlier, oversimplified treatment in similar terms. The ingress of water into poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), PHEMA, loaded with either one of two model drugs, vitamin B-12 or aspirin, was studied at 37 degreesC using three-dimensional NMR imaging. PHEMA was loaded with 5 and 10 wt % of the drugs. From the imaging profiles, it was observed that incorporation of vitamin B-12 into PHEMA resulted in enhanced crack formation on sorption of water and the crack healing behind the diffusion front was slower than for PHEMA without added drug. This was accounted for by the anti-plasticization of PHEMA by vitamin B-12. Crack formation was inhibited in the P-HEMA-aspirin systems because of the plasticizing effect of the aspirin on the PHEMA matrix. All of the polymers were found to absorb water according to an underlying Fickian diffusion mechanism. For PHEMA loaded with 5 wt % of aspirin or vitamin B-12, the best values of the water diffusion coefficients were both found to be 1.3 +/- 0.1 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) at 37 degreesC, while the values for the polymer loaded with 10 wt % of the drugs were slightly higher, 1.5 +/- 0.1 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1).

In this paper, the relative photopolymerization efficiency for polymerization of a difunctional acrylate initiated by various N-substituted maleimides in the presence of amine and benzophenone are compared on the basis of a photo-differential scanning calorimetry (photo-DSC) study. The trends in the polymerization rates were obtained from the photopolymerization profiles and expressed in terms of a photoinitiation index, I-p. An N-substituent index, I-s, which indicates whether each N-substituent plays either a positive (when I-s > 1) or a negative (when I-s < 1) role in the initiation process relative to MI (unsubstituted maleimide), was determined. Increasing interests in the use of starch as biodegradable plastic materials demand, amongst others, accurate information on thermal properties of starch systems particularly in the processing of thermoplastic starch (TPS), where plasticisers (water and glycerol) are added. The specific heat capacity of starch-water-glycerol mixtures was determined within a temperature range of 40-120degreesC. A modulated temperature differential scanning calorimeter (MTDSC) was employed and regression equations were obtained to predict the specific heat capacity as a function of temperature, water and glycerol content for four maize starches of differing amylose content (0 - 85%). Generally, temperature and water content are directly proportional to the specific heat capacity of the systems, but the influence of glycerol content on the thermal property varied according to the starch type.

Magnetic resonance imaging has been used to monitor the diffusion of water at 310 K into a series of semi-IPNs of poly(ethyl methacrylate), PEM, and copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, HEMA, and tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate, THFMA. The diffusion was found to be well described by a Fickian kinetic model in the early stages of the water sorption process, and the diffusion coefficients were found to be slightly smaller than those for the copolymers of HEMA and THFMA, P(HEMA-co-THFMA), containing the same mole fraction of HEMA in the matrix. A second stage sorption process was identified in the later stage of water sorption by the PEM/PTHFMA semi-IPN and for the systems containing a P(HEMA-co-THFMA) component with a mole fraction HEMA of 0.6 or less. This was characterized by the presence of Water near the surface of the cylinders with a longer NMR T-2 relaxation time, which would be characteristic of mobile water, such as water present in large pores or surface fissures. The presence of the drug chlorhexidine in the polymer matrixes at a concentration of 5.625 wt % was found not to modify the properties significantly, but the diffusion coefficients for the water sorption were systematically smaller when the drug was present.

Cross-linked homopolymers and copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, HEMA, and ethylene glycol methacrylate phosphate, MOEP, have been synthesized, and the diffusion of water into these systems has been investigated. Only polymers with 0-20 mot % MOEP exhibited ideal swelling behavior as extensive fracturing occurred in the systems with greater than 20 mot % MOEP as the polymers began to swell during water sorption. Gravimetric studies were used in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging of the diffusion front to elucidate the diffusion mechanism for these systems. In the case of the cross-linked HEMA homopolymer gets, the water transport mechanism was determined to be concentration-independent Fickian diffusion. However, as the fraction of MOEP in the network increased, the transport mechanism became increasingly exponentially concentration-dependent but remained Fickian until the polymer consisted of 30 mot % MOEP where the water transport could no longer been described by Fickian diffusion.

The diffusion of water into cylinders of polyHEMA and copolymers of HEMA with THFMA, BMA and CHMA were studied over a range of copolymer compositions. The diffusion of water into the polymers was found to follow a Fickian, or case I mechanism. The diffusion coefficients of water were determined from mass measurements and NMR imaging studies. They were found to vary from 1.7 +/- 0.2 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for polyHEMA at 37 degreesC to lower values for the copolymers. The mass of water absorbed at equilibrium relative to the mass of dry polymer varied from 52-58 wt% for polyHEMA to lower values for the copolymers.

The use of modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry (MTDSC) has provided further insight into the gelatinisation process since it allows the detection of glass transition during gelatinisation process. It was found in this work that the glass transition overlapped with the gelatinisation peak temperature for all maize starch formulations studied. Systematic investigation on maize starch gelatinisation over a range of water-glycerol concentrations with MTDSC revealed that the addition of glycerol increased the gelatinisation onset temperature with an extent that depended on the water content in the system. Furthermore, the addition of glycerol promoted starch gelatinisation at low water content (0.4 g water/g dry starch) and the enthalpy of gelatinisation varied with glycerol concentration (0.73-19.61 J/g dry starch) depending on the water content and starch type. The validities of published gelatinisation models were explored. These models failed to explain the glass transition phenomena observed during the course of gelatinisation and failed to describe the gelatinisation behaviour observed over the water-glycerol concentrations range investigated. A hypothesis for the mechanisms involved during gelatinisation was proposed based on the side chain liquid crystalline polymer model for starch structure and the concept that the order-disorder transition in starch requires that the hydrogen bonds (the major structural element in the granule packing) to be broken before the collapse of order (helix-coil transition) can take place. The RAFT-CLD-T methodology is demonstrated to be not only applicable to 1-substituted monomers such as styrene and acrylates, but also to 1,1-disubstituted monomers such as MMA. The chain length of the terminating macromolecules is controlled by CPDB in MMA bulk free radical polymerization at 80 degrees C. The evolution of the chain length dependent termination rate coefficient, k(t)(i,i), was constructed in a step-wise fashion, since the MMA/CPDB system displays hybrid behavior (between conventional and living free radical polymerization) resulting in initial high molecular weight polymers formed at low RAFT agent concentrations. The obtained CLD of k(t) in MMA polymerizations is compatible with the composite model for chain length dependent termination. For the initial chain-length regime, up to a degree of polymerization of 100, k(t) decreases with alpha (in the expression k(t)(i,i) = k(t)(0) . i(-alpha)) being close to 0.65 at 80 degrees C. At chain lengths exceeding 100, the decrease is less pronounced (affording an alpha of 0.15 at 80 degrees C). However, the data are best represented by a continuously decreasing nonlinear functionality implying a chain length dependent alpha.
